As the cold snap hits so many regions with a brutal slap, and European cities are struggling to cope with the Serbian cold blanketing them, I thought about my recent trip to the Monterey coast in California. Lucky me, living a mere 2 hour drive from the pristinely beautiful Monterey coastline. I can't imagine living in an area where snow storms are a regular occurance. It doesn't suit my countenance. I would definitely be California Dreamin' like the Mamas & Papas sang about in 1965 if that were the case. Mama Cass Eliott's 70th birthday was September 19th, 2011 and I was away from my writing then. To honor her, I've chosen a soundtrack from the Mamas & Papas to accompany my photos.
Please enjoy the music while browsing.
Thank you.
Happy belated birthday, Cass.
All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey,

I've been for a walk on a winter's day.

I'd be safe and warm if I was in L.A.

California dreamin' on a winter's day.

Stopped into a church I passed along the way.

Well I got down on my knees and I pretend to pray.

You know the preacher liked the cold, he knows I'm gonna stay.

California dreamin' on a winter's day.

All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey,

I've been for a walk on a winter's day.
If I didn't tell her I could leave today.

California dreamin' on such a winter's day
on such a winter's day, on such a winter's day.

Just felt the need to include a couple of songs that featured Cass on lead vocals. Such a strong, controlled, beautiful voice...

Even for the south, this hasn't been much of a winter. Still, I'll take a little California dreamin'.

on that beach. When I get tired, I want to sit cross-legged
in a locale halfway up one of those hills & ingest
the good Cali vibes. Then I guess I gotta go home.
Back to New England. Where we used to get snow,
but apparently not anymore.
Beautiful photos for beautiful music and lyrics. I really needed to hear these and recapture the feeling of swaying with her in my arms.
Cass was a star. A flat out, fantastic star. That version of "Dream a Little Dream" stands alone.
Beautiful trip all around. Thanks!
zanelle: Happy to share it with my fellow Californian. Sunny and cold right now here in the San Joaquin Valley.
l'heure: And a good grandma you are to teach them the music of our generation! My grandsons are quite well-versed on The Beatles and at age 3 can name them all.
abrawang: Hope you get out here again soon. It can recharge the soul to see those beaches in person.
Chicago guy: She was indeed a astar...who burned out way too soon. And on personal experience I can highly recommend the Bloody Mary at Nepenthe. Just the right amount of heat.
Fusun: I just read your snow post from a few days ago and was hoping you'd be able to spend a little time with me in Cali.
James: Glad you took the trip with me through the post. Nepenthe, up on that hill, has the most amazing views...and Bloody Marys.
How I'd love to be in California instead....but I can keep on dreamin'.
I wish I could take his place.
BEAUTIFOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
HUGGGGGGGG
Linda S.- I think you need to go with Steve. It will be a photographer's paradise for you!
Deborah: I was born and raised here and my only desire to move is to get closer to the coast. Hopefully, when we retire. A gal can dream!
VA: I've never lived in snow, so I don't really have a true appreciation for what that is like. But I do like a visit now and again! Good to see you here.
.
Cathy- ooo! I love a good Ramos Fizz!
Shutterbug - I wish there were more recordings of her voice. She was unique.
Sky-you're welcome!
Trilogy- I do count my blessings when realizing what a gorgeous place I live close enough to visit fairly regularly.
Kevin- Mama Cass and any locale works.
Miguela - I want to visit your state too.
Scanner- while I'm sure being stationed there is different than the freedom of living there, I am glad you got to experience the gorgeous weather there.
