Sarah Palin is a Cunt shirts a Cynical Bid to Make $$$

Rate: 14 Flag

It looks like lovely Obama campaign volunteer Volpe may be deliberately courting publicity and outrage so she can cash in on liberal hate and sexism by selling her Sarah Palin is a Cunt T-shirts.   People will do anything to make money.

While reading Shakespeare's Sister today I ran across comments that indicate Volpe is just out to make a buck.  BBE commented yesterday in my thread about these t-shirts that Volpe's profit was probably ten dollars per sale.

Some background for context:

Shakespeare's Sister has long running threads that chronicle the sexism leveled against Senator Clinton (Over 100 posts) and Governor Palin (25 and counting).  There is a sexism/racism watch for M Obama (Approaching 15).  They also have a thread that chronicles the racism against Senator Obama (Well over 90 posts).  Plenty of hate to go around.

Evidently McEwan has been asked many times recently why the Sarah Palin is a Cunt shirts are not in the Palin sexism watch.  She explained her reasons yesterday in a blog and that explanation elicted the comments that expose the Volpe profit motive.

Here are McEwan's replies where she discusses the long running money motive.  The italicized text is what she is replying to in each instance.  Her post on the Cunt shirts and the entire comment thread to her post can be found here - For the Record.   Notice that Volpe's efforts to get publicity have been ongoing for a while:

1) I'm still having trouble figuring out why this doesn't belong as part of the sexism watch. Help?

Because my writing a big post about it just gives it more attention -- which is the whole point. They want attention. They're doing it explicitly for attention. They've been trying to generate controversy about those fucking shirts for ages, dropping links in comments threads and sending emails and putting pictures of themselves in the shirts out there. They're trying to make money off of deliberate, orchestrated sexism.

I've no interest in helping them.

And anyone who reads Shakes but doesn't already grok that "Sarah Palin is a cunt" is sexist isn't going to be convinced by anything I write, anyway.

Aside from that, I can almost guarantee you the moment I posted a picture or link, there would all sorts of new trolls who magically appear to turn the thread into a humongo controversy. The point is, I know I'm being baited. I'm not taking the bait.

That's why.

2) You are not writing about the shirts because it is coming from the left.

Hmm. That's almost as convincing as the person who has been emailing me things like "this new shirt is causing quite a stir!" without even bothering to mask his email address from the company selling the shirts.

Harangue away. I'm smarter than you and I won't take the bait. Kthxbai.

************

My thoughts on this?

If this money making scheme is true, Volpe is much worse than a garden variety shithead.  She is a full fledged asshole.  All of this makes me now wonder if the Nigger please shirt photo was just a set up to make money as well?  People from both sides cashing in. If you check Cafe Press, there are plenty of people peddling hate.

Also, not all assholes are motivated by money.  Some seek fame how ever fleeting.  What if the people yelling at the rallies and carrying curious George dolls are just chasing their fifteen minutes?

The sad thing about all of this orchestrated sexism and racism is it leads to the possibility of real harm like the two idiots in Portland almost burning down a house while taking out a McCain yard sign with molotov cocktails.

Interesting that Kerry is soliticiting posts on how to communicate with the opposition today, no?

Shoot, I'd give you a thumbs-up just for your tag!
buckeyedoc, thanks. I am a cynical bastard, but deliberately courting controversy by wearing blatant hate to a Palin rally to boost your sales is pretty calculating and cold. Especially if Volpe really does want Senator Obama to win.
so its all like the rap game, just way less entertaining...
I am often right. You are like a bulldog with a bone on this stuff. thumb.
thanks for staying on this stuff LT, you do a good job
You know what I like about you, L.T.? I'm not sure of your politics but you're always willing to call out either side when they're f---ing up. Which is often.
I'd like to think that "liberal hate and sexism" are oxymorons, but of course they are not. This whole T-shirt thing is extremely upsetting to me. Honestly LT, it was hard for me to even read your posts about it. You are making important points.
Edgar, the rap wars to sell tunes is a good analogy. Sort of liek the fakery of professional wrestling.

BBE, Your modesty is noted. How exactly did you come to the ten dollar profit margin?

John Walker, I am as left as they come on everything except for the second amendment and on that one issue I am off the charts to the right. That is the best summary of my politics I can give.

martytkelley, I long ago decided there was no word in the world that could wound me and I introspected on hateful words and why they could get a reaction from me until I made myself indifferent to them. So the words are not what bother me, but the intent behind them. In the case of these t-shirts, it seems the shitheads are pandering to the mob for money and so their use of power words to hurt is doubly damning. Thanks for taking the time to read what you find disturbing.

Now I am wondering how many shirts Volpe is selling and I am humbled by Melissa McEwan's explanation of how Volpe is playing us all.
You're 100% right about the words. What did our mothers used to teach us about words and sticks and stones? I'm happy to report that in liberal loving Boulder, I haven't seen a one of those shirts, or anything like it, and I'm pretty sure someone would be blasted for wearing one.
I hope this topic is discussed at length during the debate tonight.
Shitheads will be shitheads, but it seems to take an increasingly vigilant nose to smell the bait. What concerns me is that I've seen these fucking T-shirts a dozen times now, but I had to search to find a decent article that talked about the arrest of 800 protesters and credentialed journalists outside the GOP convention. Funny, didn't see that on the news. There's something seriously wrong about where our national eye is being directed.
Modesty is overrated. I get shirts made all the time and one color one side in the cheapest there is. There are guys who will do that for three bucks a shirt on an order as small as fifty shirts. I've seen two sided one press at three fifty for fifty. So three bucks for the shirts and three bucks for postage and packaging leaves a ten dollar profit. If volpe does her own screening, she's making even more than ten per shirt.

I agree with Bowel Movement, but for probably very different reasons. I'd love to see Obama and McCain and all the press monkeys "analyzing" the debate have to say cunt on tv. That would be beyond classic. Who would pay the obscenity fines?
No, you're wrong again, BBE. We both want to see it for the same reason. At least I wouldn't fall asleep this time.

ps--Clever little name calling bit you have there, genius. I think I heard it for the first time in the third grade. ;)
This whole thing is just bad. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Blake Mitchell and BBE, sorry but the debate was decidedly not cunty.

Lindsay Hoffman, I follow the lead of Stellaa on the misdirections front. Their hands (all of them from both parties) are in our pockets while they cry look domestic terrorist! Look cunt shirt! Look nigger shirt! We react in shock and disbelief to the social grenades while they steal our wallet and the wallets of two generations of our descendants. It puts the small thousands Volpe will make on her hate shirts in context.

Koakuma, Freeborn found Volpe's profile on Obama's web site after her t-shirt publicity campaign got notice and she had added this little bit of non apology. No shame at all:

"dear democrats: if you are seriously going to judge me on my right to free speech outside of a palin protest, then i am sorry that i wasted my time and energy supporting your candidate to try and turn this trainwreck bush is leaving behind around. dear republicans: get off of your high horses. you and your candidate have proven to be absolute scumbags throughout this election. god forbid someone says something back, the whole world cries. remember mccain called his own wife the "c word" right? and for the billionth time, these shirts were at a palin protest. NOT an obama rally. you are all hypocrites."

See how she puts cunt on her body and wears it to a rally where Palin appeared, but yet she won't own the word on her page? "C-word" indeed. No shame at all. She was doing Democrats a favor, see?
I inadvertently gave a little chuckle last night when McCain mentioned distasteful Palin T-shirts during the debate. Then I had to explain to hubby what it was all about.
LT, did you notice that McCain mentioned "The t shirt" during the debate? God knows how he would have described it if asked...
Actually, wasn't "cunt" what he called Cindy when she mentioned his thinning hair?
Steph and bukeyedoc, I have been watching the debate via Youtube this AM as I drove in late last night and only caught the tail end of the replay. I did see the allusion to the shirts in that segment and it has been replayed several times on the cable news shows. I wonder how it will impact sales?

Regarding Senator McCain's likely word choices - perhaps "lady parts" or "private areas." He is an older guy.
Steph, I replied before I saw your second comment and think that despite what Senator McCain said to his wife, he is smart enough to know not to say cunt during a televised national debate. Lady parts. I think he would have gone with lady parts.

Any thoughts on what phrase/word Senator Obama would have used in his reply?
People are capitalizing on the Palin controversy to make money -- I think it happens all the time. The t-shirts are certainly in bad taste, but there are many t-shirts floating around the retail market that are just as bad. Fortunately this "logo"has a VERY short shelf life.

I do not like the use of the "c" word at all, but I don't like to hear that Obama is "palling around with terrorists", either. As the kids say on South Park, she is "hate criming him" and getting away with it.

Obama has nothing to do with the use of the "c" word on those shirts. That is a distinction for me -- Obama cannot be guilty by association when none of the same ever sticks to the Republicans. Again, not condoning this at all. Some people need the $10 now -- that is a dir4ect result of Republican policies of which McCain and Palin are "guilty" of espousing.
Yeah, we didn't get "cunt," but we came real close to "breast of fresh air."
lalucas, I am just glad Melissa McEwan exposed Volpe and her partners for what they are.

Blake Mitchell, very punny. Any thoughts on what I asked Steph? Please be creative.
Not for nothing, but if I, a purported Obama supporter, spent all day talking about the ravings of a few fringe lunatics at a Palin rally, then I would justly be considered a jerk for distracting from real issues. Sure John Lewis did exactly that, but he is also being considered a jerk in many circles despite his heroic background.

You see, it really doesn't matter, in the greater scheme of things, who is or is not a cunt on any given t-shirt. It could be Palin, it could be Jesus, it could even by yours truly, neilpaul. At no point will t-shirt slogans really matter to the fate of the world.

To prove my sincerity in these beliefs, I will commission and wear a "neilpaul is a cunt" t-shirt in the very near future. I hope it is a day when I'm visiting my mom or grandma. I am certain that my experience will show the unimportance of it all.
Neil Paul, I am not a supporter of Senator Obama or Senator McCain. Or are you referring to Volpe who is a volunteer for Senator Obama's campaign?

If you are referring to me, please feel free to address what you think is important on your page. This is my page and I will write about what I want whether you think it is worthy discourse or not.

If you are not referring to me but are instead calling Volpe a jerk, I understand your point, but I do not agree with you on the impact of shirts.
neilpaul is trying to kill his grandma. That's sad.
Neil Paul, The Freaky Troll is TWAT shirt scandal is a perfect example of the damage shirts can do to a campaign.

And do you really want to kill your grandmother?
Saying whether something is important is as valid a comment as any other, pro or con. Maybe I am mistaken, but it is my understanding that people here are generally allowed to make comments, even ones that are not correct.

If you do not like my comment, you can comment on it to that effect or you can delete it. Such is the power everyone has on their own blog.

Telling people to comment on your posts on their blog is churlish nonsense.
I am not a purported supporter of Senator Obama.

Neil Paul - cut the crap. Your original comment was meant to belittle this post and the other people who took the time to comment here. You labeled the subject matter unimportant and distracting and essentially called me a jerk for even discussing it.

My telling to you feel free to have high level discourse on your space as I am fine with my low brow musings was a polite way of ignoring you being a total scrot.

I've only ever deleted one comment in my entire time of blogging on the internet. Your snooty garbage doesn't even come close .

Now, about the premeditated murder of your grandmother....
In my opinion any attempt to blame arson on t-shirts deserves to be belittled. Sorry if that offends you.
Are you so stupid as to really believe that is what I wrote?

Are your reading comprehension skills that poor?

Or is it simply because you seem incapable of commenting on anything I post without being a completely ignorant fucktard and so deliberately misinterpret what is pretty clear?

What part of "all of this orchestrated racism and sexism" can be intereted as merely t-shirts when the post refers to the shitheads yelling at the rallies and carrying monkey dolls?

But never mind. You are consistently a jerk and shouldn't waste my time.
You said:

It is my postion that random acts of violence are random acts of violence. How do expressions of sexism lead to burning someone's property? Really, saying that a candidate's platform will hurt America (pretty valid, non-racist, non sexist propagandizing) is as likely to lead to some idiot acting out, if they really believe the propaganda. When and where has it been shown that carrying monkey dolls or yelling foolishness at a rally is more likely to incite some idiots to violence then saying that a candidate is waving the white flag of surrender on America's behalf?

Should we start fretting over any negative comment on any candidate? After all, negative feelings about candidates lead to acting out among those who lack impulse control regardless of party or ideological affiliation.
Yes, that is what I wrote. Nice that you can cut and paste even though you can't read and comprehend.

You know nothing happens in a vacuum. The media picked up the "Senator McCain is not controlling his followers" whine that Senator Obama's campaign put out and it flooded the airwaves all weekend. And led to the unfortunate comments of a certain respected Congressman. And so we have shitheads lobbing molotov cocktails, etc.

I've been upfront in all of the Sarah Palin is a Cunt threads/posts that I don't think either candidate can control their shit head fringe. Shitheads will be shitheads.

You prove the point by continuing to argue just to argue.
Ok, so I guess it's ok for everyone to start wearing 'Obama Is A Pussy' T-shirts. www.obamaisapussy.com
Anita, No, it is not OK and nothing I have written anywhere indicates that is it.
