Time for change: A rescue mutt is the way to go (Updated)

Rate: 23 Flag

I am a big fan of rescued dogs and have been adopting strays my whole life.  There is nothing better than a dog in your home and nothing better than giving a homeless dog a home. Who cares about breed or pedigree. The future President is the ultimate American mixed breed himself.   It is time to break from tradition and have a mutt as the first dog.

The following photos are from Kinky Friedman's Utopia Rescue Ranch which over the past ten years has rescued over a thousand dogs from certain death and placed them in forever homes.  Perhaps the Obamas would consider giving Willie Nelson a chance?

Or maybe Pearl?

There is the super intelligent Mr. Ziffle who has a trampoline in his enclosure:

Or the Obamas could be completely out of the box and go with the big change that is Lucy Ricardo?

If it must be a puppy, the pounds and shelters of the United States are full of puppies who would be great companions for the Obamas and make the White House lively and fun.

Maggie

The above photo is of Maggie who was also a Kinky Friedman rescue, but I think she has already found a home.

If you live in Texas and are looking for a good dog, think about a trip to Utopia Rescue.   They are open to the public on Saturdays and are located about six miles north of Medina, Tx which coincidentally has a cafe that serves some of the best apple pie and coffee in the Hill Country.

 ***

Money may buy you a fine dog, but only love can make him wag his tail.

***

Dogs are cowboys; cats are Indians.  Like the yin and yang of our souls, they fight across the dusty plains of our childhood, their only fault, that they don't live long enough.

***

I have always felt that what we do when a stray crosses our path - how we react to the hungry, homeless stranger - is indubitably a measure of our own humanity

( All quotes from Cowboy Logic, The Wit and Widom of Kinky Friedman and some of his friends)

Update:  If you cannot adopt a Texas dog, but want to support Utopia there are many ways to do it.  The shelter costs over five thousand dollars a month to keep up and Kinky is always having bonefit concerts to keep the dogs and other animals in kibble.

At his website, www.kinkyfriedman.com, you will find the 2009 Utopia calender, excellent salsa, the Utopian Cigar, a book written by Kinky's friend Cousin Nancy who lives on site and keeps the shelter going, and many other items of interest that will be "financial pleasures" (as Kinky likes to say) for the animals who live at Utopia.   Or you can always just send them a couple bucks.

I heartily agree. The best example would be a shelter dog or puppy. Good point!
The senator has the wisdom to be on the record as wanting a rescue himself.
About adopting pets from shelters, you and I completely agree. Teaser and the Firecat give this post 8 paws up, even if it is about dogs.

rated.
Thanks. I have a couple of cats who live in the yard and tease the dogs unmercifully. I call them Mr. and Ms. Yard Kitty. I feed them, but only Ms. Yard Kitty will let me get close enough to touch her.
I was thinking exactly the same thing. All my pets are rescues (from shelters or, in one case, straight off the street). I couldn't imagine getting a pet any other way.
When I was a kid my parents were very indulgent and let me have two and three strays at a time. I found one at the post office and another at the school yard. Some just wandered up to the homestead and I fed them until they stayed. I wanted to be a vet with all my heart growing up, but then the family navy tradition interfered.
LT, I changed my tags on the other story. My attempt at humor.

Now to your post. I have only had stray, shelter dogs my entire life. There is nothing like one when you save them. They know it, they never forget it and they are a friend till the end...

Kudos and rated for its importance.
Greg
Brilliant idea, LT. Glad to know also that it seems to have been a campaign promise!

Think of how much this will benefit the strays all over the country!

Look at those wise saddened but hopeful eyes...
Bless you cause I know you volunteer and help out your shelter!

rated and just loved the quotes!!! How about including a link where we could access the gift shop and buy one?
Steph, thanks for the great suggestion. I considered putting a link to Kinky's online site which offers his books, signed, but thought it might be crass.

Utopia is too far for me to volunteer, but I do send money and put only Kinky's salsa on my breakfast tacos the profits support the rescue ranch.

I will put the link in the post, but here it is as well:

And Kinky has a cigar that supports the ranch. It is called the Utopian and is reputed to be very fine by those that know cigars. While I have smoked cigars, it is expected in the navy at Dining Ins and other formal functions, I am hardly a connoisseur but I found them pretty OK.
I am a big fan of mutts, having spent my childhood inter-breedng thoroughbreds--Poodles with German Shepherds for example. Adoption of dogs is the answer, though. There are way too many breeders and they really flourish at the expense of the abandoned mutts. But hey, get that ugly pig out of here. Aesthetically revolting.
Adopting shows compassion.
Utopia has three pot bellies that need homea. People adopted them when they were cute little piglets and abandoned them when they grew up.

I have compassion for all those unwanted and Utopia is a no kill for life shelter committed to keeping all their animals healthy and happy while at the same time searching for forever homes.
conspiracychic, how funny that we both types compassion at almost the same instant. There is not enough compassion in the world.
I have two rescue dogs and five rescue cockatiels in my home. It's loud, raucous, and more fun than you could ever imagine. There are dog breeds that I would love to invite into my home, but it is more important to me to do something, even something small, to help all those lost and abandoned animals running around unloved in the world today.

I hope the Obama family opts for a shelter puppy.
iliamnaa, I think a shelter dog will be picked from what I have read here on OS and at other internet sites where they are discussing the new first dog. Both of the Obamas have weighed in for a rescue.

This will be very good for dog shelters and I am very pleased with this possible change in White House tradition.
Ding, ding, Ding!!! I think we have a winner here folks.

Even the little guy in my avatar shares his digs with his idol, Buddy, who is an 8 year-old 90 lb Labrador from one of the local shelters.

Boris thinks that Buddy is the bee's knee's and so do I.

Great post. Can't argue with the logic at all. If the Utopia krewe had a Basenji available, it would be just perfect.
I was just at Utopia two weeks ago and while there isn't a basenji, one of the current dogs does have a curly basenji style tail.

Your video brought back memories of a basenji my parents got right after we returned to the US from Iceland. His name was Captain and I had actually forgotten him today while I thought back about all the dogs in my life. We had relatives who bred basenjis and Captain was a hell of a dog. He was actually my first dog ever, but he was more my mother's dog than mine which is probably why he slipped my mind. The mutts I brought home were the ones I thought of today. Thank you for thinking of basenjis. Captain was a very good dog and I now can't believe I forgot about him.
"The future President is the ultimate American mixed breed himself. " Great comment.

I rather liked Lucy Ricardo. Although I really think they should get a pair of bearded dragons. One for each daughter. First-Reptile pets.
Kathryn, at the risk of being thought a very strange child I will confess to having a thing for snakes while growing up. I managed to keep one in my room for a couple months until my mother found it under the bed. So I like reptiles, but don't think the Obamas will make that leap. Dogs and cats are like apple pie. Even a mutt will be considered revolutionary.

John, thank you for giving your and Boris' votes of confidence to mutts.
Gosh, I wish I could adopt them ALL. I have a soft spot for all animals but my real love is the common dog. I have had Boston's for years, as well as little mutts and they are all the most loving, loyal little characters you will ever know. I adopted a crippled kitty 3 years ago and he has become the center of the family, along with his doggie sisters. He's an inside kitty because of his injury and is such a loving animal. They inrich our lives.
If you changed the color of the snout Pearl she would look just like the rescue dog my wife after weeks finally talked me into taking home. Now I hate to admit it but I am very attached to Tiffany. The name implies that she would be elegant and somewhat prissy, she is anything but. My knick name for her is “Lug” as she built like a tank, solid.
As we travel and at some times can’t take the dog we keep her in “Dog Resort”. This is a real dog hotel. When I leave off she trot right over to the owners and checks out her grounds knowing she is in for a week or so of pure doggy heaven. She is the most popular dog they take in.
I didn’t want a dog again as this place has buried on it 6 dogs over the last 30+ years. At one time it had 4 horses, 2 dogs 13 cats, 29 chickens and 2 pigs that were named Pork Chop and Bacon. Unfortunate my daughters renamed them a different more acceptable name to them and began playing with them. Yes pigs are quite friendly and smarter than dogs, but as this was a ranch and they were the food I was looking to put in the freezer and no the table, I found I was in a losing position. The first pork chops were put on the table and my daughters looked at them and lost their appetite.
The cats were strays. At that time I built this house we were the only ones on 500 acres and so often people would dump their cats and we would end up with them. Dogs were a different matter as they often ended in dog packs in this rural area.
Peggy, there were two or three I met up at Utopia that I wanted to bundle into the car and take home. I told my parents that I might be kicking them out to find another ride home and they were not amused. My dogs have always been companions so I know exactly what you mean about characters. Each has always been their own person.

Folkmuse, there used to be a lot of dog dumping near where I grew up as well. There was also the reverse, dog snatching. I had one or two particularly handsome strays who had come to stay disappear. My parents always thought someone had seen them in the yard and taken them which was not an uncommon things in the country.

Pigs are pretty smart and I felt sorry for the three at Utopia as they will probably be there for life. I am just not set up for pet pigs at this point in my life.
All the many rescue animals who have been ( and Zoe, who still is)a wonderful part of my life would agree as well.....
Wow! When did you change your profile photo?
Ah, now the choice of pet gets politicized. The shelter people versus the breeder people: who will win this election?
You are a genius. And I say this fully patting myself on the back for having posted this very comment BEFORE I read your post just now.

We are both brilliant. And smart and attractive, I'm sure.
My boyfriend and I recently adopted a rescue cat, so I feel a certain comraderie with the OBamas on this one, but only if they adopt a rescue dog.
Byjane, good point. I think the fix is in for the shelter hounds based on prior statements the Obamas have made. There are lots of pure bred dogs who end up in shelters, so perhaps the Obamas will split the ticket and end up with a shelter dog with a pedigree. There are also breed specific shelters so those who see something they like here on OS like Lonnie Lazar's bisenji or Gary Justis' dobermans can find one who needs a home. Mr. Justis did just that when he adopted his Blubberstick.

odetteroulette, I have my moments but have a way to go. Thanks for all the undeserved compliments.

Ms. Puta, so good to hear from you. I've been envying your time across the pond. I have the travel bug good this time of year, but have to stick to Texas for a while. I also have a soft spot for hungry cats.
absolutely, it's got to be a mutt! If they want the best, that is.
Dogs! Dogs don't care if you're clean. I love dogs. All mine are and have been mutts/rescues. And I have five rescued canine nieces. In Texas. High four!
