Oliver of the North Goes to Afghanistan

Rate: 14 Flag
c28152-12
RR and Ollie North, circa 1985. Oh oh

Some House republicans apparently have calendars that have not changed since the Reagan years and seem to be possessed by a time-warp.  They recently invited notorious, (almost ex-convict) and private citizen, Oliver North to give them advice on Afghanistan.

It seems that they think the guy who worked for the Gipper, and lied about the Iran-Contra arms deal is a stand-up guy when it comes to informing them about the best solutions to the US involvement in Afghanistan.

North's answer?  More troops.

Really?  A guy who sold arms, diverted funds and lied about it is the guy to advise Congress on US troop policy Afghanistan?

Representative Mike Pence of Indiana (R) and  Buck McKeon (R) of California, who is also the top-dog Republican on the Armed Services Committee, issued the joint invitation to Ollie.

Said the dynamic duo:  “Col. North is someone who enjoys the very broad respect of the House Republican Conference.”

Perhaps their Congressional constituents ought to spring for calendars for the dynamic duo this holiday season?  You know.   Calendars for this century with footnotes reminding them that Ronald Reagan is no longer President.   And Ollie North is no longer a Lt. Col. in the Marines.

Welcome back Ollie.  Hopefully your 15 minutes of fame in this century will be brief.

Yeah well, that figures. This is the guy who convinced Reagan that Iran-Contra was a newbrand of disposable razor.
R
I wouldn't trust Ollie North to run a 7-11 store, let alone act as a fact-finder for congress. McChrystal on the other hand knows what he's talking about.
Do the Republicans remeber what Reagan did for Afghanistan?
Who trusts Ollie North on anything?

(My grandfather drove a heating oil truck in Columbus, Indiana, home of the illustrious Mike Pence. I believe Rep. Pence entered Columbus North High School right after my Dad graduated from there. Grandpa remembers him and his family from the oil truck route and referred to them all as "slick, cheap little bastards" LONG before Mikey got elected to Congress.)
One could only wish this retread would blow out just like all those others that litter the highways.
This man is pathological. And so was his handlers.
North asking for more troops? Isn't that what McChrystal is asking for?
This is a poor excuse just to attack the man.

By the way his convictions were vacated.
I wish he would have stuck to writing, or having a ghost writer write, military/international intrigue/thrillers. Those are at least somewhat entertaining even if they seem to end up with a character named Oliver North riding to the rescue. Those are at least innocuous.
Nothing Republicans love more than a guy who made deals with the ayatollahs in Iran.

Hey! Wait a minute... That makes no sense!

Situation normal in the GOP, then. AFU.
John - now that is quite a picture. I can totally see it.

Nanatehay - yep. And why the heck do these morons need Ollie to confirm what McChrystal has already said. yikes.

ocular- I think they do not. If it isn't marked on their 1980's calendar, they would not know.

Leeandra - Pretty good description of Pence.

Tim- indeed.

Blackfon - overturned on appeal. different.

Walter - and he could keep earning a living that way and leave the world alone. but sadly, not going to happen.

Norwonk - now, that was funny.
"His convictions were vacated" well, good for him and Bush41. I guess the government-within-a-government they were running was given a stamp of approval along the way. There was no treasonable action, then, correct?

Ollie North broke the law in a big way. But GOP criminals somehow are never prosecuted. They just slime their way offstage. An encore seems like a bit much, though, doesn't it, Ollie?
Yikes! Does that mean no more "War Stories?"
Isn't it funny how the Republicruds want to destroy Obama, but they're behind him 100% in Afghanistan? The only thing they're criticizing him for is he's not sending enough troops to Vietnam, oops! I mean Afghanistan soon enough.
This Halloween the Republican caucus will also be raising Lee Atwater from the dead.
Oh godddd....... tell me it ain't so! I hoped that Ollie had vanished off to the far depths of talk radio long ago.... and now the idiot republicans want to call on his words of wisdom?
He's also the guy George W had on the ship to pump up the troops for Iraq. Amazing, isn't it?
Ollie was just following orders and doing what he was told. Who here thinks that there is a Lt. Col. anywhere who can do an Iran-Contra style operation as a freelance? Col North is just the man who ran the operations of what happened. He did not have the power to come up with the idea, get the money, and run the operation behind every bodies back. He did what any good Marine would have done. He followed an order that he believed was legal.
Perhaps the blogosphere can discredit North by calling him by his rightful name: Childkiller.

That said, the Carter administration very purposefully set in motion the events in Afghanistan that would give the Soviet Union "it's own Vietnam."
I haven't voted for a Republican since 1992, and am known by friends as a bleating-heart liberal. But after reading "Blue's Bastards" and "The Nightingale's Song" my opinion of Ollie-Blue is mixed. Were I a congressman, a Dem definitely, I'd listen closely to Ollie's report and opinions. If a GOP POTUSA gave him a post, I'd move to Canada. Like I said, mixed.
Personally (I know you'll all hate me for saying this, b-u-u-u-t...), I think Ollie North was doing the US a Big Favor with the whole Iran-Contra thing; and, though he was doing it in a kind of slimy, under-handed, definitely 'covert world/spy-versus-spy kinda way, it was actually Good from a 'Big Picture' - but only if you're as pragmatic, and as anti-Stalinism (I AM, basically, a 'Pinko'; I don't acknowledge the Soviets, Maoists, or Pol Pot as anything but stupid peasants who betrayed the Revolution. What was it the Who said? We won't get fooled again?), as I am (i.e.: You think the Cold War was necessary and good).
Look at it this way; The Contras were our 'friends' - the Iranians, not.
Sooooo....Ollie North sold some weapons to our enemies, so they could kill our current enemy (Saddam, who they were at war with), then used the money he made to help our friends.
Sounds 'Good' to me.
This harkens back to not only the obstructionist 'Anti Bill and Hill' agendas of the Neo-Conservative 90's, and how they were 'justified' (as revenge) for the 'Anti-anything the Gipper does' obstructionist agandas of the Democratic Controlled late-80's Congress.
North is an Expert on this area - and, even though I'm now-a-days a Die Hard Democrat Obama Supporter, I think it's time we abort this kind of obstructionist thinking and action; we've lost so much, so many opportunities to advance our various causes, with this kind of 'OH! How I HATE Him! He, He....HELPED someone else who I also HATE!' throw the baby out with the bathwater kinda crap.
Welcome to my 'Left of Center' rabidly Progressive World!
Ollie North should quit
he's left over from way back
we don't like him now
How long before they bring back Ronald Reagan's astrologer?
