Valentine's Day Love Letter: Dear Mom

My mother's name was Edith. I don't have a picture of her to put here. They were all lost in a fire. I was 21 years old when she died suddenly 40 years ago Sunday, on Valentine's Day 1970. This is for her. She never heard this song when… Read full post »

It appears that Sonia Sotomayor will be an activist judge after all.

During arguments in a campaign-finance case, the court’s majority conservatives seemed persuaded… Read full post »

plymouth

Dad bought a brand new 1955 dark green Plymouth Belvedere. It was a 4-door. I thought it was ugly. It was to be the only brand new car he would ever own. Eventually it would be the car my Dad taught me to drive in. It was 6-cylinder,… Read full post »

My Letter from Michelle Obama

I know I said my next post would be a continuation of my last. I lied. (haven't had time)

Growing up in Miami Beach in the 50s and 60s was, what can I say, unique. How many kids grow up playing good guys bad guys with mobsters from New York. I have some stories about it that I have wanted to tell for a long time. Dear readers, IRead full post »

Film Review: "Avatar," 3-D or not to 3-D

Like a lot of people, I don’t go out to the theater to see movies much any more. Being an electronics freak I have the requisite 36-inch flat screen, but unlike most of you I have it rigged up to an old Sherwood amplifier with 5-channel output and my old,… Read full post »

obama, the dark side

That phrase keeps coming to mind, and today I actually read it somewhere. Resistance is futile. I am enough of a Trekkie to vividly remember the end of that episode when Capt. Picard was turned into a Borg/Cyber monster -- TO BE CONTINUED... It was one of the scariest moments… Read full post »

Dear Reverend Moyers:

Wait just a minute, you cannot retire. We need you now more than ever.

I've sold my soul to the devil and present you with a portrait which will slowly grow old while you begin getting younger. Stay with us, PLEASE.

The year 2010… Read full post »

Having spent my early childhood in Manhattan, my Mom learned to cook from ethnic friends in the projects, but somehow she never met a fresh vegetable in NYC. My idea of fresh vegetables came from the twice-yearly mashed rutabaga we would have on Thanksgiving and Christmas. And BEANS? Those would be… Read full post »
