Things To Keep In Mind While Watching Dollhouse

Rate: 10 Flag

For those of you not quite as in the know as the rest of the Nerd-a-verse, tonight FOX is premiering the new Joss Whedon show Dollhouse. Dollhouse stars the excellent Eliza Dushku as "Echo", a woman who has her memories completely wiped at the end of each mission she undertakes. She's one of many "dolls" that can be rented out by rich clientele for anything from assasinations, hostage negotiations, mid-wifery (yes, you read that correctly), and even just plain old sex and companionship.

I encourage you to check out this show. Joss Whedon has produced some great TV in his day, and many of us are hoping this next project will pay off for the viewers.

Here are some things you should keep in mind while you're watching tonight's episode:

  • Keep your expectations low. This is the sort of world that requires a lot of time to fully flesh out. Also, it's well known that Fox executives "helped" shape the pilot and early direction of the show, plus Joss himself has said that it took awhile for him to truly decide where he wanted to go with the plot, so the early episodes may only be of average quality.
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer didn't really hit its stride till the second season, so a show like Dollhouse may also require patience to hit its stride. I'm going to give the show the full 13 episodes this season to really make an impact on me.
  • While you're waiting for the show to really wow you, enjoy the beautiful cast Joss has so thoughtfully assembled for you (see pic below)
  • At some point this season, there will be hot girl-on-girl action. If that doesn't make you want to watch...
  • Another activity to engage in while you're waiting for the show to get great is to ponder which material Tahmoh Penikett's gorgeous face has mostly likely been carved from: granite, marble or the ivory from a unicorn horn.

FYI - I will be reviewing Dollhouse after tonight's episode premieres, so stayed tuned to the blog for that.

UPDATE: Episode 1 review is posted up here

YAY for JW!

(Umb. - I think Fox posts all its shows online the next day. It's how I get my weekly Wentie *swoon* fix.)
I am simultaneously afraid to get into this show and quivering in anticipation. Mostly because I'm convinced that no matter how good it is, FOX is going to pull a Firefly on it and that would make me In-SANE.

I've already gotten attached to one new galaxy in the Whedonverse and gotten it ripped out from under me.

I don't know if I can handle that happening again.
Verbal,

If it makes you feel better, at the NY Comic Con, Joss specifically said to the audience that Fox was NOT pulling a Firefly. The network has committed to sticking with the show, and has promised to air all 13 episodes (in order!) this time. Joss said he was very happy with the way the network has approached his show this time.
Thank you so much for reminding people. I thought Fox had already determined its fate when it scheduled it on Friday. I am reassured about the 13 episodes.

I am conscious of being nervous that it is not going to be as good as Buffy, Angel, and Firefly.
I'm a serious, busy person. But "Buffy" and "Firefly" were guilty pleasures of mine, so I'll definitely tune in to see this new effort. Besides, Eliza Dushku is a hottie, and that's reason enough.

Now, if only I can drag my partner along for this ride. She doesn't like "sci-fi" shows, and fell asleep halfway through my DVD of "Serenity."
I'm waiting for my copy of Dr. Horrible on DVD because there is actual singing commentary on it.

Looking forward to the Dollhouse, and your thoughts after the premiere tonight
Joss hasn't let me down yet.
He's got some mammoth freakin balls for premiering another show on Friday the thirteenth, on fox, just like Firefly, but hey maybe he's not superstitious. Either way, I'm looking forward to it and I'll give him at least one season if they make it that far.
Rated.
I am home. I wake up every moring to indulge my Guilty Pleasure of old Angel reruns... over and over. Faith was always one of my favorites so I am thrilled at the prospects of this show. Frankly I can watch Eliza in anything.
Ok... as predicted, I am not wowed yet. I am haveing a hard time with the stupified look she adopts in between active personalities. Sigh... I think I am still hoping for Faith.
So good so far...but girl on girl action will make me quit watching...don't want to see it...sick of it...enough already....Pervs!!!
I do miss Firefly. Will have to come up with some sort of plan to wrestle the remote out of Karen's paws on Friday nights. Actually, she's gone to bed, wonder if they are replaying it now? hm..worth a check!
1/2 way thru Dollhouse. Misogynistic stepford wives? For men only. Women pawned out as prostitutes and then their memories are erased. wow. creative. really.
I expect it go well...it's an excellent premise...I can't wait for the Dolls to become AWARE!!!

Unfortunately I won't be watching with ya'll unless I'm willing to spend hours letting the stream buffer.
Ok, watched the opening segment of this show and I am ready to declare that this piece of shit sucks the big wally. Loved Firefly, loved Dr.Horrible and I am hating every tedious mindless, and needlessly obscure moment of this Television torture. I pray that FOX breaks their word and cancels this shit so that Whedon can move on and re think , This is awful.
I see some people here ignored my advice about keeping low expectations... :)

thesagejournal, welcome to my blog. This is a designated place to celebrate pervy behavior and general non-conformity, so if that bothers you, this is not the place for you.

Quick reaction: I give it a B- as a pilot. I'll write up some more thoughts later today, but yeah, had this not been a Joss Whedon show, I'm not sure I'd give it many more chances. However, there was enough there to interest me and keep me going.
When I need another excuse to hate Fox, I remember Firefly. And to my shame, I didn't fall in love with the series until I saw it after Serenity and watched the canon on DVD and then I knew what I had lost. So I will be there for Dollhouse, forget that I forgot to record the first episode.
I gotta say I'm with Umbrellakinesis on this one. I'm a huge Whedon fan, but since his shows have wonderful little moments where they refer to past episodes and link plotlines throughout the episodes, and make each ep so much better if you can remember all the little details that came before, I don't think I could bear to watch them on broadcast television. Too many interruptions, especially having to wait a week for each new episode, but I look forward to checking out a few ep's online and picking it up on DVD if he stays true to form.
The pilot was weaker than I'd hoped, even with lower expectations. Whedon said that the show doesn't hit its stride until the mid-point of the season. For whatever it's worth, Maureen Ryan, the Chicago Tribune TV critic, said that the pilot was the weakest of the 3 episodes Fox sent her as previews. Ryan says that next week's episode is "outstanding."
I liked it. At least, I liked it enough to watch next week, and see if it holds my interest then.

I don't like the idea of whoring out vacant women for rich men's pleasure, and am hoping that Echo gets some power in her life, as well as some sort of identity independent from her "characters." I like the ex-cop troublemaker with a moral conflict. Not hot on the FBI angle, but we'll see where that goes.
Really, women who are programmed to please men sexually then forget? Who came up with this plot idea a horny 16 year old boy?

And do they have insurance in case they mess up the schedule and a programmed assassin shows up instead of a call girl. Wouldn't that be a bitch, waiting for some mindless hottie for the ultimate non committal sex and she shoots you in the head.
Just to point something out - there's boy dolls in the Dollhouse as well, so before we get too crazy with "Oh this is just about pimping out girls for sex, etc etc", let's remember that 1) the show is SUPPOSED to make you question the ethics of these shenanigans, and 2) there's guys being exploited too. If anything, I think it would be interesting to examine the notions of exploitation in general, not just with a focus on gender. What does it mean to use a person in that fashion, regardless of whether they're a man or a woman? What motivates the clients? Are there scenarios where you can identify with some of the clients? If the personality is artifical, can a person truly consent to sex? I mean, I assume that the first personality we see willingly wanted to sleep with the guy. Is there free will in a scenario like the Dollhouse? Can the personality say no? Is it a matter of crafting personalities that are LIKELY (but not predetermined) to do a certain action, such as falling in love/lust with a client? Or is there a trigger built in that compels the doll to do a particular action?
Looking forward to it. The more I watch Buffy (I rent the DVDs now so I can be a geek and listen to the commentary), the more I think it was THE smartest show on television. Joss Wheedon is a geeky, wonderful pro-female free thinker.
Ethics? Programing women to kill, have sex, and do whatever the rich want and can afford. I think those ethical questions have already been decided. It's wrong. The idea that this can all be done by programing and the erasing the whole affair after the deed is done does add a ethical question. Are these women people or just mindless extensions of the will of the rich. Again even that ethical question was raised during the civil war. It was called slavery.

Sorry, I like a good sci-fi show which usually blends some ethical and philosophical questions in the mix. But, this show is just a glossy high-tech version of fantasy island meets Weird Science.
I'm not a Whedon fanboy by any stretch... I've seen maybe two or three episodes of "Buffy" and none of "Angel." For full disclosure's sake, though, I'll admit that I believe the raw deal given to "Firefly" was a criminal offense against good television. And I think "Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog" is one of the funniest things I've seen in ages.

All that is to say that I didn't watch "Dollhouse" expecting to love it just because it's got Joss Whedon's name attached to it. But I did expect it to be at least be watchable, given what I knew of Whedon's creative track record.

And watchable it was. I enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to seeing more. It was high-concept, something that doesn't always work in a television show... but it didn't talk down to the audience and explain away its concept in one episode. It assumes we're smart enough and patient enough to let it unfold.
I totally saw the previews & thought ok FOX another Dark Angel esque blah show :( womp womp. I think Eliza is HOT!!!! On the other hand it seemed overly sexual in commercials meaning there was nothing to the show other than Eliza is HOT!!! However after reading your post I will check it out
Joss has apparently made shows showing women as strong. This ain't it.
TV has hit a new low with this show. Human trafficking is put forth as entertainment and does not "educate" at all but accepts and takes purient interest in the ugliest part of human nature. It is small wonder that violence against women and the silence against human trafficking (which occurs in every nation in the world as an origin, transit or destination of human slaves), is rampant in our culture.
Just look at what we love to watch.
Again, a lot of people seem to be jumping to conclusions about the intent of this show, in regards to whether or not it glamorizes human trafficking. I mean, it's pretty obvious the we're supposed to question the morality of the Dollhouse, and I know that in upcoming episodes, we'll be getting more of Paul Ballard's POV, and that we're meant to cheer for him to rescue the Dolls from their bondage.
With all due respect, Mad Typist, I do stand by my thoughts on this show.
The fact that a male is required to rescue the women once more puts women in the role of either being used or rescued and does not portray them as actors in their own right as his earlier shows do. I think this show represents his capitulation to the voyeristic aspect of what sells on TV. I would like to see a show about the brave Afghan women who put their lives on the line to be actors in their societies.
It is not a documentary but an entertainment show or why else would it promise "hot girl-on-girl action"?
It is a new low.
Fair enough, o'stephanie, though the show you feel you want to watch clearly isn't a piece of sci-fi fluff on Friday nights. A show about "brave Afghan women who put their lives on the line to be actors in their societies"? Fine, but are you saying you have no interest in a less serious, sci-fi romp?

Again, I must point out that there are Dolls that are men, so its unfair to suggest that it's a man rescuing a woman - Ballard may focus on Echo, but he'll be rescuing Victor and the other Dolls as well, presumably.

Lastly, the show didn't promise hot girl-on-girl action, I did. Mostly because I like a little escapist fantasy now and then, and despite what some people think, that sort of stuff isn't just for male viewers.
Damn, OSteph--you've quickened my pulse this time with that "human trafficing" bit & all. Go you!
