Tony Kornheiser out; MNF now 100% less awful to watch

Kornheiser out; Monday Night Football now 100% less painful to watch

Our long national nightmare is over, fellow football fans. It was just announced today that Tony Kornheiser is leaving Monday Night Football. Allow me a moment to cackle my joy to the heavens that this blessed day has finally come. In my nightmares, I had pictured myself going to Hell, and in that Hell I would be chained to a La-Z-Boy and forced to watch 24/7 football commentary served up by Kornheiser and Dennis Miller. And every game would be the 2008 Detroit Lions versus the 2007 Dolphins.

I can't really say it better than the guy over at Yahoo! Sports - he pretty much sums up my thoughts exactly - so I'll just go ahead and link to his blog. I share his sentiment that my hate for Kornheiser is directed exclusively at his MNF performance. I actually really enjoy watching Pardon the Interruption (PTI) on ESPN, and think he fits that format really well.

Replacing Kornheiser on the show is former Bucs head coach, Jon Gruden (a.k.a "Chucky" to those of us who love his grumpy, "I may murder you soon" face, which reminds of so much of the doll from the Child's Play horror series). Gruden will bring a great coach's perspective to the booth, and I assume he'll jell better with former QB star Ron Jaworski (a.k.a. "Jaws").

For nostalgia's sake, I'm going to link to my original post complaining about Kornheiser, just to kick the dog one more time before he GTFOs my program forever. See you on PTI, Tony.

"Oh No! Tony's gone?!?" moaned all 14 people who thought Emmitt Smith "really brought something to the table over on ESPN."

I actually think Kornheiser was worse than Dennis Miller. You nailed his annoyance factor in your original Cornholster post.
LOL to your entire comment, Edgar. Somehow I knew you'd be the first to comment here. :)
I love Tony on "PTI" with Wilbon but he is NOT cut out as a color commentator. They should call me! I'LL give them some color! BLUE! :-D
Rated - Tony's not as bad as Bob Ryan!!!! He looks like Andy Rooney's younger, grumpier brother!
He was miscast. Painfully, woefully miscast.
Agreed he is good on PTI but has no business on MNF!
I completely disagree with your opinion. You couldn't be more wrong. BTW, who is Tony Kornheiser and what is this thing called "Football?"
I haven't seen MNF in years, but I used to read Tony Kornheiser's editorials in newspapers and found him engaging and funny. I was very confused when he was picked for MNF, I can see how you'd think he'd be terrible in that format. Just writing to say he's not all bad, his writing was very good.
There is someone more annoying and less informative than Dennis Miller? Who is Tony Kornheiser? How did I get here anyway?
mercergirl - Tony Kornheiser is good in print, and he's good on PTI, because both of those formats allow him to have his material prepared in advance. He's great at talking about topics when he knows in advance what they're going to be. He struggled on MNF, because you can't script that stuff out ahead of time. You have no idea who the hero is going to be, and who the goat will be. He also had no ability to quickly diagnose the play on the field, or the formation, so he provided no value there.

Blue Crow - I'd say that Tony Kornheiser was equally as bad at commentating as Dennis Miller was. However, since I'd still totally have a beer with Kornheiser while I'd only want to see Dennis Miller in person if I got to punch him in his smug face, I'd pick Kornheiser over Miller any day as a human being.
Chucky may be an upgrade from Kornheiser, but he won't be able to fill Madden's shoes.
Spin Doctor, that's because NO ONE could fill John's shoes (*sniff sniff*).
I never could figure out why he got picked. I don't remember (when I lived in DC and read the Post every day) him being a football guy. From watching PTI, which I love, I can't figure out what sport he's expert at, now it comes to asking. Nor Wilbon, for that matter.
mad_typist,

Please tell me you were crying in your last comment, and not sniffing Madden's shoes.
Oh, c'mon. I agree that Tony wasn't a great fit, but Dennis Miller never even watched the game. He was always commenting on his problems in the bathroom or something. Dennis Miller was the worst cast of all time. But I agree that the show will be better without Tony, although I'm not sure how much better with Gruden. I mean, Gruden is the poster child for the deaf and dumb. He's a pretty quiet guy who will need camera time to get his scowl out to the nation to get his point across. I think two people would be fine on the show. But how about someone more colorful like Michael Wilbon?
Thank God!!!! (I almost believe there is a god now.) I could barely watch MNF when he was on it. It was so obvious that Jaws hated Kornheiser. I mean HATED. And I felt the same way. There was no genuine interplay between TK and the others in the booth, because nearly everything he said sounded scripted by him (and I would bet that over 50% was). I agree that he's pretty good on PTI. But MNF? Oh, no.

This is truly a watershed moment in sports. You know how every game or every team these days is "the Greatest Team of All Time"? This is the Greatest Firing of All Time. Praise be to the football gods!
I'm not so sure that Chucky's a good pick, btw. My favorite current sportscaster has got to be Hubie Brown. Jaws is great, but he can get a little over-excited and sound kind of stupid sometimes. Hubie is perfection. And his name is Hubie.
Chris - you're right, it was pretty clear Jaws wasn't a fan of Kornheiser. We'll see how Gruden does. If you read Peter King's column, he says that Gruden did a good job on the NFL Network, so you never know.

BeastofBurden.... No comment :)
I like Tony, but Monday Night Football was not for him. He was arguably a worse fit than Dennis Miller.
"In my nightmares, I had pictured myself going to Hell, and in that Hell I would be chained to a La-Z-Boy and forced to watch 24/7 football commentary served up by Kornheiser and Dennis Miller and Rush Limbaugh. And every game would be the 2008 Detroit Lions versus the 2007 Dolphins."

Fixed that for you. You're welcome. :)
Really, this is unfunny, unoriginal and unnecessary piling on. You aren't making any observations here that you, the Yahoo guy, King Kaufman, and many others had made long before. A post worthy of the crude rantings in the ESPN blogs. How it became an Editor's pick on Open Salon is beyond me.
I, REPUBLICAN also agree that Kornheiser was/is a blight on the entire sports world. Thanketh our LORD for finally banishing him!

I, REPUBLICAN SAYETH! so it must be 21% true ...
Like you: think Tony good on PTI.
