Best. Roll call vote. Ever.

Rate: 8 Flag

So, I don't know if you were watching, but something wonderful just happened. New Mexico was about to cast, and then they yielded to Illinois, which in turn yielded to New York. Entering the floor on behalf of New York was Hillary Clinton, who was the one to move to officially declare Obama the nominee.

I'm officially touched. What a lovely stunt.

I was proud to watch this amazing moment. Thank you Hillary, for gracious leadership.
Best convention ever. It's wonderful to have the delegates express themselves as individuals. What a vote.
Madame, Farmer, darlin', keep away from the kool aid.

Seriously, it is nice to see the Dems circling the wagons. They are gonna need all the unity they can muster over the next couple months.

Reporting from downtown Denver - Lonnie Lazar
Yes, Stellaa, best possible under the circumstances, and best ever. Maybe there'll be a better one in 2012 and beyond, but that's not my point.
yeah - I couldn't believe how great that was. Didn't see it coming. I felt sorta teary. agree with Barry- she was the very definition of gracious professionalism.
A better one in 2012? Why is anyone even thinking about the year 2012? How 'bout we concentrate on the next few months?
I felt sorta teary.

That would make you like the 10th person I've talked to about this that felt that way. It was really tremendous.
I had to rewind it and watch it again, grace under pressure. Wonderful.

Lonnie, I might be feeling furklempt but every convention I have ever watched was with an already-chosen candidate and bordered on schmaltzy cheap theatre. This one truly meant something, the first black candidate ever, unity lost and found, I'm thrilled with the whole process. BTW, are you really in Denver?

And Stellaa, darlin', you got to let it go. I know it's hard but Hillary released her delegates and they were free to vote their hearts and minds and I'm touched that they did.

Again, best convention of my lifetime.
Me, too! I teared up.
I'm looking forward to Bidey turning up the heat tonight.

Jay Rockefeller is BOOOOOORIIIINNNNNNNGGGGGG
Also, when did Melissa Ethridge become the Democratic Party's official musician? I don't like her music. Can't we have Ludacris perform his Obama song instead?
The McCain camp would just LOVE if they could broadcast Ludacris over and over again to get up the ire of the "I can't vote for a black man" set. Just when they start to think the old white guy isn't the way, Ludacris will blast on the set.

I'm not a great fan of M.E. either but including her is an expression of an all-inclusive party. Send us your women, your gays, your people of color. You white liberal elite be quiet for a while now.
Yeah, Melissa Ethridge? What's up with that? I have to take a pass on Ludacris though. How about Kanye West? Hi politics are complex and some times problematic. But he's from Chi-town. And: "George Bush doesn't care about black people." Need I say more?
Yes, really in Denver.

They should have had me and JD up there singing for 'em tonight, if our performance at his house in Boulder yesterday was any indication. We could have given 'em great versions of New Speedway Boogie ("Please don't dominate the rap Jack, if you got nothin' new to say...) and Instant Karma ("You better recognize your brothers, everyone you meet...). Would have been far better than M.E. She was cheese-filled.

And, uh, the Dems may be ready to nominate a Harvard educated black lawyer for president, but they are not ready for the likes of Ludacris or Kanye West to be convention entertainment.
Stellaa...it was thanks to Hillary that it WAS the best roll call ever.

I was watching in my classroom after school while I was grading papers. I got all teary, too.

I'm old, folks. I never really thought I'd witness this in my lifetime, but I am so proud to be an American AND a Democrat. If it had been Hillary, I would have been just as proud.

Now (after partying for the speech tomorrow), let's roll up our sleeves and get him elected.
I postponed the watching of Sesame Street that usually happens right after dinner, put my son on the couch.

As we got to the big moment I whispered in his ear:

"We are about to do a beautiful and noble thing, Little Man. Pay attention."
Bill Clinton getting ready to speak. Remember what I said about the kool aid.
Liz, you made me tear up all over again.
How nice to have this thread for "live commenting" Clinton's speech. He's starting off okay, so far.
I thought it was wonderful, too - really a great moment. And to see everyone breaking down in tears, overwhelmed by the reality of what is happening... History is being made and it's incredible to witness.
Great opening line, Bill! Put all the media questioners out of business right off the bat. Home run.
Yep - he's saying exactly what is needed. "Barack Obama is ready to lead...ready to honor the oath...to be President of the United States" Yes. Thank you.
You know why Bubba loves Biden so much; he's a tie to the Republican wing of the Democratic party.

I don't want to piss on everyone's teary fire here. This IS a historic moment and I'm on record as hoping Obama's acts reach something even closely resembling his rhetoric. Tonight and tomorrow are the Dem's time to shine, but don't forget the huge row there is to hoe, n ot only getting Obama elected, but more importantly delivering on his promise of change once he's in office.

Clinton looks good, and I don't think I've ever heard him speak so comfortably and so well.
We'll be hearing that line tomorrow, about "the power of our example, vs the example of our power."
I don't know if I've ever seen such an impassioned crowd. History in the making, over and over. I feel privileged.
Lonnie, it's not just a man crush? Guy love between two guys a la "Scrubs"?
He's doing a good job of linking together both foreign and domestic policy under the heading of National Security. Which was supposed to be the theme tonight.
Lonnie, I don't think we're ingenues here or hypnotized by Barack Obama. I, for one, am well aware of all that needs to be done and don't need to be reminded. I'm sorry if I'm coming off harsh, but I'm a little sick of all the scolding that I see here on this site from posters who seem to think that anyone who supports Obama is under a spell or a hater.

Bill is on fire.
One of the best (and most concise) speeches I've heard from him. It was a very good speech. He filled his role as an elder statesman for the Democratic Party very well. I haven't liked him for a long time. He's proven to be a flawed human being (BFD though because so am I) and in spite of my voting for him twice I have long mourned the lost potential due to his personal actions.

He didn't try to outshine Hillary's speech. He did hit some critical points to help focus our attention on what is good about us and bad about the others. He did well.
Bill is on fire. I'm a little behind the rest of you, had to pause to argue with the toddler that politics was better than Scooby Doo. I loved the "power of our example, vs the example of our power" line. Bill's got great spontaneity, too. Other than his pecadillos, he was a great president.

Off topic, Michelle Obama has just gorgeous hands.
And now Kerry's drilling down into the data: Senator McCain vs. Candidate McCain. It had to come from him.
The last eight years of Bush tearing apart so much of what he did had to piss off Bill mightily. He left office with no deficit and now we have the worse ever.
Ok, i missed bubba (i can't believe it either, will watch tomorrow) -- who's this boring guy on now?!
Chet Edwards, a Representative from Texas, whose name was apparently on the list being vetted.

Did you get to see Kerry, I hope? Fieryness from him.
Beau Biden is talking -- EVERYONE is crying!
I know. My daughter called me just as Biden was beginning to ask if I knew that his first wife had died. She said that story made her cry. And she's usually a tough cookie. At least on the outside.
JP, I appreciate your fire, I don't take it as harshness, and hope to see you on the front lines holding these guys accountable for the hopes they are raising.

Unfortunately, we've gotten the long-winded, pretty boring Biden tonight instead of the attack dog many were expecting. Hard to follow that performance by Bubba, though.

See y'all tomorrow.
Actually, I think Biden is being very effective.
Lonnie, that high altitude is making you ornery. Find some oxygen, stat.

I'm behind again. My male bloodhound is bleeding like a stuck pig from a growth on his elbow (nice, huh). After running out of gauze pads, I wrapped his leg in maxi pads and taped it with duct tape. Never say I can't come through in a pinch.

How cute is Joe Biden's mom? I'm tearing up again. Along with eveyone else. God throws no cross you cannot bear. Oh, my, so appropriate for us right now.
Lonnie was just a bit hasty. Biden was introducing himself first, tonight, before going after McCain. And I, for one, enjoyed hearing about the impact his parents had on him. It was illuminating.
Can you believe that David Brooks is now making a case for McCain choosing Lieberman?

Oh, please, please let it be.
and that you could see Mama Biden mothing "That's true! That's true!"

What a wonderful night. . .
It was emotional, but for me that was because Hillary Clinton's campaign for president officially closed the door and that was sad because it ended a dream that so many women have carried in our hearts and minds for so many years. Doesn't mean we won't see a woman as president someday, but for all of us who have clawed and scratched out our successes, swimming upstream and fighting against the male status quo, working inch-by-inch to get progress for women throughout our society, it was the semicolon to a dream.
Yes, Laura, but the black race has done the same and are equally deserving in my book.

My last comment, I thought Obama in his cameo sewed it up perfectly, congratulated the Clintons, siad Hillary rocked the house, paid his dues, and dazzled on the side. I think I'm in love.
All I have to say about the post mortems --

Wolf Blitzer is the most inane human being in the world. He is going on and on about the music and the other CNN anchors are ribbing him incessantly about it. Seriously, just about any of the bloggers here on OS would be a better choice to be a commentator at the Convention.
I agree, Laura, but just like Hillary always picked herself back up during the primary campaign, something that Biden's mother apparently taught him to do, as well... we have to do the same.

She's not done yet. I don't know what it will look like, but I think Hillary will have some more surprises for us.
Wow! I have to agree. It was an amazing moment delivered by an amazing woman. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton Rocks!
