WSJ: No slips = "women have forsaken underwear"

Some hold-over from the 1940s named Christina Binkley is lamenting the disappearance of slips from women's wardrobes:

... the real truth, I believe, is that the end of slips coincides with a diminished sense of modesty. Our social mores no longer conform to a world where nice girls wear skirts thatRead full post »

Oh China, don't ever change

In preparations for the Olympics, Chinese authorities are reportedly requiring bar owners to sign forms consenting to enforce a series of rules, including...not serving any Mongolians or black people. Nice.

Here's a video of chimpy at a private fundraiser, which "somehow" got leaked.

The president makes jokes about:

  • the housing crisis, and how there's no crisis in Dallas because Laura Bush is in Dallas trying to buy a house and it's difficult
  • how he's been the decider all/

mladic karadzicHey, did you hear about that guy they arrested in Serbia for war crimes, Radovan Karadzic?

You know what his crime was? Trying to keep the Muslims out of his beloved homeland, that's what.

On page 89 of this week's New Yorker...

No, it's not on the cover, but it's a review of an opera (read online) accompanied by this photo:

santa rape

I'm just sayin', it's called The New Yorker for a reason -- our community standards of decency are different from many other parts of the country.

I was reminded by Tony Wang that George Bush's Chief Economic Advisor, N. Gregory Mankiw, used to write textbooks on economics. I happen to be in possession of one from 2001, before Mankiw's appointment. Muahahaha.

If you're not interested in reading Mankiw's whole analysis, the gist is this: in… Read full post »

So, it seems to me that 2 distinct strands are developing in the outrage:

  1. The Muslim, flag-burning, Osama portrait part, which subdivides into (a) this is irresponsible because people will take it seriously, and (b) this is just not funny.
  2.  The Michelle Obama portrayal: the afro, the/

Professor Brothers: Bible History #1

This is from the series "The Professor Brothers" at This is NOT SAFE FOR WORK AT ALL, but I find it very, very funny. Also, if you are Christian, you will find this very offensive. You were warned.

The New Yorker's Obama cover

**So, I think my Obama vow of silence, as I have practiced before, is only regarding criticising Obama. I don't think it extends to supporting him, which I am happy to do.**

Thus, after giving it a lot of thought, I think I am really into this cover.… Read full post »

An urgent message about ethanol from 1984

From Children of the Corn (1984):

Isaac: And did you not spill the blood of the old man when his oil and gasoline were still useful to us?

Isaac: Show not your pride, Molochai, we have not enough.

Happy 4th of July!

So, I know a lot of us would like to see Dick Cheney & Friends tried for their multitude of wrongs. I was lucky enough to take a class on war crimes & such, and here is a list of possibilities and their likelihoods:

Watch the video of Hitchens getting waterboarded. He lasts about 15 seconds.

After the experience, he says he now has nightmares of being smothered, and thinks that if someone were waterboarded who didn't have the information he was alleged to have, he might very well go insane.  Read full post »

Obama & Rumors

Why is Barack Obama having such a hard time shaking off false rumors, while more damaging truths about McCain are getting no traction?

Racism. That's right, that's all it is.

Why textualism & rights don't mix

So, here's what I've been thinking. Today's gun rights decision notwithstanding, the textualists/originalists like to say that "if it's not in the constitution, it's not protected by the constitution." And they love to cite various rights to back up their statement: the rights to contraceptives, ab/… Read full post »

Gun rights case: textualism? what textualism?

The long-awaited Supreme Court ruling on the meaning of the 2nd amendment has just been handed out, with Scalia writing the majority opinion, upholding the right to own guns for self-defense and hunting.
