The Episcopalian Cutie'

Rate: 3 Flag

I'm sitting here as is my normal morning routine, sipping a cup of Honduran coffee with just a touch of half and half and a teaspoon of turbinado sugar, and the story of Father Cutie' splashes across my television screen.  Surely you've heard of him.  He's the very charimatic priest who was caught on a remote beach somewhere in Mexico hugging and kissing a woman, with whom he later admitted, he'd had a sexual relationship.

It seems as though he has decided to become an Episcopalian minister which will allow him to marry his fiancee'.  Good for him.  But, where my utter amazement comes from is this quote from the Archbishop of Miami (essentially, Cutie's boss):  "Father Cutie's actions have caused grave scandal within the Catholic Church, and led to division within the ecumenical community and the community at large.  Today's announcement [that Cutie' is sliding over to the Episcopalians] only deepens that wound."  Are you kidding me?!

This is the same Catholic Church who hides pedophiles, whose leader suggests condoms don't help with the AIDS virus, who has committed numerous atrocities all in the name of the holy trinity.  Yet, here we have a young man who came clean about his indiscretions (granted, he was caught before doing so), and rather than drag the Church through the muck, opted to continue to serve God how he best sees fit.  And the Church calls that a grave scandal?  Oh, and thanks by the way, for implicitly admitting publicly that the Episcopalian faith is a step down for a priest.

Just when one thinks religion can't get any uglier. . .

I saw the same footage and heard the same words from the archbishop. How extraordinarily disingenuous for him to suggest that a man who appears to be good, kind, and decent is somehow playing the provocateur to the mighty Catholic church! The church has many other cudgels to bear without whacking on this particular priest.
Good for Father Cutie. I'm glad he's found his happiness. I personally think the whole celebacy thing in the Catholic Church needs to be thrown out the door. Priests should be allowed to get married.
Thanks, 'mezzo. I might be tempted to reference that hoary biblical adage about taking care of the mote in one's own eye before worrying about others'.

Nice to see you, Gwen, and I agree with you wholeheartedly--I'm all for someone wanting to be chaste, continent, and celibate in pursuit of a spiritual quest but question making such adherence a requirement for priesthood. Of course, as some would argue, Cutie' chose the life of a Catholic priest and as such knew the rules going in. They'd get no argument from me. No, what truly irks me is that the Archbishop of Miami had the temerity to call out Cutie' as being scandalous to the Catholic Church. Oh, please. . .
Historically, priests have never been allowed to marry. At one time, though, married men could become priests.

A good friend of mine is a Catholic priest. He would never marry, as he's never had that calling. In his opinion, very few current priests would choose to marry, if they had the option. The life of a priest does not lead to a good family life.
Perdidochas, thanks for the comment. Undoubtedly you are correct that many would choose not to marry if given the chance; however, using the implied reasoning that a priest couldn't have a good family life doesn't quite cut it with me. The priesthood is no different than a great many professions to include preachers and ministers of other denominations aside from Catholicism. I feel compelled to reiterate that those who have chosen the priesthood did so with full knowledge of what was required. Yet, it's that requirement with which I have issues. Though there is a whole pedagogical history behind celibacy in the Catholic priesthood, none have adequately explained to me pressing reasons why such dogma continues.

Even so, I don't really have much of a dog in that fight--I just find the whole situation rather bizarre in this age. Mostly, I'm amazed that the archbishop said Cutie' had caused a "grave scandal" within the church merely for following his heart then becoming an Episcopalian. If I were the archbishop, I'd look inward first.
