my god what contrasts. to see the power of knowledge and critical thinking infused in those who will be the future leaders and policy makers of this country, to instill the love of learning and the value of where one's culture fits in society both in a historical setting and how it relates to the now and future, and contrast that with bigoted old white racists who make policy and how they affect those that cannot think critically, it's just stunning--and not in a good way. So, a protestor holds a sign that says "Go Home and Unfuck Mexico" I actually had to think on what that meant...gah, the stupidity and arrogance of those that hate. (well, i admit to hating ignorance.)

Amazing piece Marcelle, I hope more people see this.
hola Barry!

I cannot wait for this film to come out. I was blown away when I heard Pearce say that Ethnic Studies was 'hate speech.' And Horne is disingenuous when he says that these classes corral students based on their race and teaches them hate. 56% of the students in Tucson are Hispanic and all students get to choose which courses they take. Most of the student who choose to take this class are, no surprise, Hispanic.

From the NYTimes NYTimes , Horne said in a letter that "he believed that students were learning hostility from La Raza teachers, citing an incident in which students at the Tucson High Magnet School walked out on a speech by his deputy, a Republican Latina, who was trying to refute an earlier speaker who had told the student body that Republicans hate Latinos." That looks like a silent protest to me, not hostility.

They get my full support.
"...people be judged by the content of their character..." YES. Si!
