Natalie Portman, who has a BA in Psychology from Harvard, a guest lecturer at Columbia University, who has co-authored scientific research papers, speaks several foreign languages, who is 30, financially secure and not a burden on society, is a terrible role model according to Mike Huckabee.
"You know Michael, one of the things that's troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, 'Hey look, you know, we're having children, we're not married, but we're having these children, and they're doing just fine.' But there aren't really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie. And I think it gives a distorted image that yes, not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses. Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that's the story that we're not seeing, and it's unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock"
Seriously? What reality is Huckabee living in? In my reality Bristol Palin was uneducated, on assistance (from her mom, a government employee), unwed teenager who was rewarded with a role on Dancing With The Stars and given a lucrative book deal for her memoirs.

Which exactly glorified and glamorized 'the idea of out of children wedlock.'

but....
I think he's right. I think women who have children without benefit of a partner are taking on the weight of the world. only they don't know it until they do. I'm not suggesting marriage is the answer. I AM suggesting that single parenting is rougher than anyone imagines until it's them.
education. education. education.
huckabee is an asshat but even an asshat clock is right twice a day.

foolish monkey - I agree, being a single parent is hard. I don't agree that "Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care." And I don't think that Portman being pregnant inspires unwed pregnancy.
just cathy - I heard last night that he was back peddling and saying that he loves and respects Portman. Hah!
joan h. - Thanks
sweetfeet - I know! My 65 year old mother watched the Oscars and her first thought when Portman won was "I like her, she did a really good job." I asked her if she even gave a thought to Portman being pregnant and unmarried. She said, "no, I never thought about it. I was thinking about the movie and her acting."
Stellaa - you're welcome. She's not my favorite actress and I didn't really like the movie or the way she played the character. But as far as her character goes and the way she conducts her life, she's well worth the regard.
