Hearts broke across Detroit Friday night as the Pittsburgh Penguins outplayed the Red Wings to win the holy grail of hockey— the coveted Stanley Cup.
After a long, grueling hockey season, it came down to the final seconds of the final game of the Stanley Cup championship season, which saw a rematch of the defending Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins. As the final seconds counted down, the Wings couldn’t muster a second goal to tie the game, try as they might. The Penguins won 2-1.
It does seem somehow fitting that the Penguins won the Stanley Cup back from the defending Red Wings in Detroit; the Red Wings clinched last year’s championship in Pittsburgh.
The possibility of a second Stanley Cup in a row had captured the imagination of the Detroit area, distracting it from its economic and social woes. Home to the collapsing auto industry, Detroit also has a 22 percent unemployment rate, the highest in the nation.

You guys (wings and penguins) have got to figure out how to get a win in your own city though.
What we're the post game crowds like? If this were a win or lose in Montreal the rioting would be sinking the city into more economic despair (last year we torched a few police cars over a game with Boston. In only the second round! I can't even remember if we lost or won. It doesn't seem to make a difference anymore. )
I am delighted Pittsburg won the Stanley cup. They played extremely well.
Juliet -- I identify with your Ben dancing around. My kid told me that it was OK the Penguins won because they lost last year and it was their turn, after all -- I think he's learning too much fair play stuff at school. I had to laugh.
And there's always next year. Wonder if Hossa will want to go back to the Penguins!
