Sunflowers

Rate: 12 Flag

  Library - 2065

I planted sunflower seeds along my backyard fence a few years ago, hoping for a bounty of the flowers that always make me smile.

Nothing grew.

As time passed, I forgot I had ever planted the seeds.

But this week, at the end of summer, nearly six months after I lost my newspaper job, the sunflowers decided to burst forth for some unknown reason.

Maybe they know something I don't.

Sunflowers are very cool. Traditionally, several Native American groups planted sunflowers on the north edges of their gardens as a "fourth sister" to the better known three sisters combination of corn, beans, and squash.
They know *survival*
I'll throw in my vote with Chuck's comment - if it's a sign, let it be a sign of good things!
I think they do know something Maria. I hope they're working their magic on you.
I love sunflowers. These are beautiful.

How can good things not land where sunflowers beckon?
What a lovely symbol of life and hope and good things to come.
You've got the perky kind of sunflowers! I used to take pictures of a field of them every year at the paper down in Dogpatch, but they were the droopy kind. Always had to watch out for angry bumblebees, too. I think the state's Department of Natural Resources planted those flowers to attract wildlife for hunting, though. Glad you're back, Maria.
I have a romantic attachment to sunflowers and still have dried petals from a bouquet I once received that reduced me to tears. In Paris, no less.... Every once in awhile (when I allow myself), I open the small box where I keep them and seeing them renews my hope about many things....
Beautiful. Yellow is one of my favourite colours. I passed by a stand of sunflowers on the main street near where I live that were about 10 feet high. I've never seen any that big before.
It is hard to feel sad when confronted with such a happy flower.
Maybe OS stands for "Omigosh, Sunflowers," or "Optimistic Sunflowers," at least for today. Either way, they're making me feel good. Thanks for enjoying them, too.

I've been away for a bit, working on a project, and it feels good to spend a little time with you again. And Cartouche -- what a lovely story; maybe we'll learn more about it someday.
I think it's the Michigan summer we're having. All kinds of things I planted years ago have made a surprise reappearance this year. Our Zone 5 climate didn't behave the way it was supposed to--spring was warmer than summer. You can, however, see climate hiccups as divine providence--the universe giving back, and so on. I like that. It fits.
