1st of a Series
This film is much more than a tearjerker & one of the 1st films about family dealing with Cancer. But the naughty but nice pairing of Shirley MacLaine & Jack Nicholson softens the pain; bringing a sweet late-in-life coupling that tugs at your heart!
MacLaine is searching for love & Nicholson is looking for another roll in the hay. Though not "easy"; if he admires her precious "Renoir" in her bedroom; she forgives him on all counts. If life could be that easy!
The humor, in contrast to the seriousness of the rest of the film - jumps out & holds us captive; as we try to remember that life is made up of the light and the heavy & we must embrace both.
My Favorite Scene from this film is:
After riding in a Convertible with the top down, Shirley MacLaine's Hair & Hair Piece are blown to smitherines as her lunch date with Jack Nicholson, a Womanizer & Retired Astronaut awaits her return. The blowsey pink cotton-candy dress she wore was perfect for the disheveling.
She has just visited the restaurant Ladies Room to re-essemble herself after being tossed about & is indignant:
SHIRLEY
I think that is extremely rude noticing other women when you're with me.
JACK
I...think we're going to have to get drunk!
SHIRLEY
I dont get drunk, and I don't care for escorts who do.
JACK
You got me into this - you're just going to have to trust me about this one thing. You need a lot of drinks!
SHIRLEY
To break the ice?
JACK
To kill the bug that you have up your ass!
And then my favorite line:
SHIRLEY
Impatient boys sometimes miss Dessert!
