Being genetically hard of hearing drew me to the new Black & White, Silent Movie "The Artist" - bringing me close to Bliss! Watching this Award Nominated film was the perfect panacea - letting my ears rest & my imagination fly.
I can't say I want to make a steady diet of "The Silent's"; but it certainly was a treat throughout. Besides; I've been drawn to Mimes since my San Francisco-livin' days & have always had a weakness for the game "Charades" - where Nuance is King & "Mugging" is Legal!
From 1927 to 1932; the Movie Industry went from "Silent" to "Talkies" - but those left toiling were tossed about; like a ship in a storm.
And this adversity is the theme of this movie. But it doesn't just relate to this Industry or to this era; but to all who are effected by growth & change.
Body Language, Muted Gestures & the Subtlety of a raised eyebrow; tells this story with nary a sound - a lot like my Home Super 8's!
But because Music is an important part of my family; I was aware of the accompanied background soundtrack.
Not the Mighty Wurlitzer or the clanky sound of an upright piano of the Charlie Chaplain era; but an orchestration befitting an Award garnered blockbuster.
This film didn't use a barrage of hit songs strung together; it told the arc of the story; note by note. And the placement of each note; pulled at our heart strings; whether it brought a tear or a much sought-after smile.
At the very least; this necessary nectar heightened the drama & created expectations about the present & future events.
On the other hand; I have a personal Litmus Test that I adhere to - if I'm watching a movie & start noticing the soundtrack - means I'm bored with the Flick!
That also goes for making a Grocery List in my head while I'm watching!
But believe me; this Gem is the exception.
This "Movie within a Movie" stars the brilliant French Star, Jean Dujardin who's every thought translates to viewer empathy.
And Bèrènice Bejo is a joy to watch thanks to director's Michel Hazanavicius attention to detail - from the Cloche Hats on women, to the Vintage Cars on the street, to the right amount of salt on my Popcorn!
But Uggie; the irrestible Pup is the biggest Scene Stealer. If they had Awards for Dogs - this one would surely have a leg up!
