Having just read Carrie Fisher's latest book "Shockaholic"; I was reminded that we have a Connection - 6 or 600 degrees; but none-the-less - a starting point for a woman I've long admired for her razor sharp wit & literary prolific-ness. But most of all as a Script Doctor; editing Comedies to make them funnier!
Our Connection? You see; I remember my late husband telling me that in the late 1950's; he had a date with Singer Eddie Fisher's younger sister.
He was a Jersey Boy & drove to Philly for this (I think, Blind Date). He wasn't bragging about it; it was just something in his past & after that; we usually laughed at the irony.
We or I, only laughed because he said he came to her door with a Bloody Lip!
I visualized the retelling; as a date from hell - or a horrible way to start a meeting of any kind. As memories go; mine is muddled as to how he told me he cut his lip. I do know; it was a fresh cut; not from shaving or opening a can of tuna before the date!
I believe it had to do with opening the storm door incorrectly as he prepared to knock on the front door.
What kind of face did she have when she opened the door to greet him?
And who was this Blind Date anyway - Dracula?
I had so many questions for him: "Did you go on the Date like that, or did she usher you in & nurse your wounds, or did she invite you in to meet the folks"?
And of course; I know I must've asked him "Did you kiss her"? Ouch!
The one thing I do remember him telling me was; it was the only date! And he never brought it back up again - unless I did it for him! ha ha
Fast Forward to 1975 at the London Palladium; where my husband & I saw the Teen Age Carrie Fisher singing alongside her Mother, Debbie Reynolds in the Musical Revival of "Irene".
But during the show; I wondered if he was reminded of that Blind Date & a few of Eddie Fisher's hit songs, "Tell Me Why", "Turn Back The Hands Of Time" & "I'm Walking Behind You"! With a split lip; where else would you be walking?
Since then Carrie Fisher is best known for her "Star Wars" portrayal of Princess Leia & "Shampoo" with Warren Beatty, "The Blues Brothers", "Hannah & Her Sisters" & "When Harry Met Sally".
And as Best-Selling Novelist & Screenwriter of the semi-autobio "Postcards From The Edge" with Meryl Streep & Shirley MacLaine as Debbie Reynolds.
She is also known for her bi-polar episodes, her drug addictions & depressions leading to Shock Treatment which stripped away some of her memories of the bi-polar episodes, her drug addictions & depressions - not to mention sneaking calorie laden goodies to forget the Shock Treatment!
Ha ha...there's a joke in there somewhere!
Her successful Book, Broadway Show & HBO Special "Wishful Drinking" was a hilarious send-up of her scandalous dysfunctional family & her coping mechanisms.
But unlike her previous works of wit; this most recent book, "Shockaholic" was down & dirty - with heartfelt forgiveness about her now deceased father who abandoned her, her brother & America's Sweetheart, Debbie, her step-father who squandered Debbie's money, her beautiful step-mother Elizabeth Taylor & her friendship with the iconic Michael Jackson.
There's also a Ted Kennedy moment & a surprise ending where Eddie Fisher gets the last laugh!
This wise old soul with a young & purposeful heart; was born innocent into a celebrity family that was about to Pop & "Go Shakespearean" or at least Biblical!
Living a painful yet rewarding life in the only way she could; as we speak - is losing weight, self-deprecating jokes & a lifetime of emotional baggage - as a spokeswoman for Jenny Craig!
Admittedly; it wasn't a charmed life - but luckily; it was miserably anecdotal!
