When my 104 year old Aunt died recently in Arizona; I inherited an Antique Sewing Machine & boxes of Vintage Sewing Patterns - including Ali MacGraw!
Aunt Lil was among other things, an exemplary Tailor; dressing herself in Paris Silks, Venetian Lace, Egyptian Cotton & Bombay Prints - even though she lived in casual Tucson her last 50 years.
She was born in a Shtetl in Russia; where every piece of Fabric was dear & worked for every Needle she ever threaded.
Knowing that I too, loved to sew since Junior High; there was a special bond - and we physically matched in Size - so it was a Win-Win.
Thru the years, I can't say I've sewn with any of her fancy price Fabrics - but we who have this passion; can spin anything into Gold! At one time or another - we have indeed; made a Sow's Ear into a Silk Purse!
And sometimes; that applies to writing Articles too! ha ha
That raw beginning in school, stays with me as we first labored on a Simple Pillowcase to a Lined Winter Coat & still cherish the laughter we shared from our mistakes & blunders...From too many Sleeves - To sewing our Neck Pieces together!
Of all the Patterns my Aunt owned - Ali MacGraw was the only Celebrity Model on a Cover.
Until now, I didn't realize that in the 60's Ali worked at "Harper's Bazaar" under Fashion Icon Diana Vreeland & at "Vogue" Magazine as a Model & Stylist & that's probably how the paper Patterns came about.
I always loved Ali in all her Acting Roles - starting as "preppy & snarky" in the 1969 Philip Roth Movie "Goodbye Columbus" & her break-out Tearjerker Hit, "Love Story" - where everyone knew what was meant by "Love means never having to say you're sorry" - except me...& am still confused!
And in 1971, Ali suddenly rose to fame & was Featured on the Cover of "Time Magazine" - while I just had a Subscription! ha ha
In 1972, she Co-Starred in the Blockbuster, "The Getaway" with her lover/husband-to-be Steve McQueen. And, when they got married; she took a break from Show Business till 1978... and who wouldn't? ha ha
I would've taken much longer; if you know what I mean!
After their Lips got tired; Ali returned to Television & joined "Dynasty" & the TV Mini-Series "The Winds of War" - which I was "an Extra" in the 1983 Sequel: "War & Remembrance" - and wrote about it in my Article "EXTRAS, EXTRAS - Read All About It"!
That is where I ended up with the Leading Man...leading me to the Chow Line! Can I help it if I have a terrible Sense of Direction?
In her 50's, Ali made a Hatha Yoga Video "Ali MacGraw Yoga Mind & Body", which was an instant hit.
Her spiritual side, linked to her Yoga influence is evident in her perspectives to her Past, Present & Future - culminating in her Autobiography "Moving Pictures" where her frankness on Addiction & her eloquent grace matched her stellar New England education.
Most recently, she wrapped it all up with an appearance on "Oprah - On Aging"; where she embraced her advancing age as a Joy - not as Sadness or Regret.
Again - she's much more positive than I! Frankly, it's absolutely Mind Boggling - and I don't Boggle very well! ha ha
Oh, when will you see my sewn Masterpiece?
Well, it may be a little difficult to arrange...but my new "Ali MacGraw Outfit" can be seen in any one of my Fantasies with
Thoth ...I mean "McQueen"!
