israel our allies??? - Are you serious?

Rate: 15 Flag
From the beginning the story sounded VERY fishy.  I listened in stunned disbelief.  I was only 19 years old, but WBAI radio, Pacifica Network TOTALLY commercial free, and only supported by it's listeners; had taught me NEVER to believe newspapers.

They were tools of the government.  Day after day, I would read several newspapers in the morning; and listen to WBAI and hear exactly the opposite of the newspapers at night.  Who did I believe?  WBAI, a BIG You betcha!

I know something wasn't kosher, rotten in Denmark.  Why would israeli planes attack an american ship, and not just once, but repeatedly?

Just follow the money trail - it's always the money that is telling.

And this is why I was not AT ALL surprised that when obama told netanyahu to stop the settlements, basically bibi, as he's affectionately known in that heathen land, just laughed at him and basically said:  Oh yeah, obama boy, You and who else is gonna' stop me.

What a jokester, he!  This despite the fact that we give these savages 3 billion dollars of YOUR tax dollars every year;  and this is but, one example of what they use it for - this has been going on every single day since '67 (and before):

The USS Liberty': America's Most Shameful Secret

by Eric Margolis
by Eric Margolis

This article was written in 2001.

NEW YORK – On the fourth day of the 1967 Arab Israeli War, the intelligence ship "USS Liberty" was steaming slowly in international waters, 14 miles off the Sinai Peninsula. Israeli armored forces were racing deep into Sinai in hot pursuit of the retreating Egyptian army.

"Liberty," a World War II freighter, had been converted into an intelligence vessel by the top-secret US National Security Agency, and packed with the latest signals and electronic interception equipment. The ship bristled with antennas and electronic "ears" including TRSSCOMM, a system that delivered real-time intercepts to Washington by bouncing a stream of microwaves off the moon.

"Liberty" had been rushed to Sinai to monitor communications of the belligerents in the Third Arab Israeli War: Israel and her foes, Egypt, Syria, and Jordan.

At 0800 hrs, 8 June, 1967, eight Israeli recon flights flew over "Liberty," which was flying a large American flag. At 1400 hrs, waves of low-flying Israeli Mystere and Mirage-III fighter-bombers repeatedly attacked the American vessel with rockets, napalm, and cannon. The air attacks lasted 20 minutes, concentrating on the ship's electronic antennas and dishes. The "Liberty" was left afire, listing sharply. Eight of her crew lay dead, a hundred seriously wounded, including the captain, Commander William McGonagle.

At 1424 hrs, three Israeli torpedo boats attacked, raking the burning "Liberty" with 20mm and 40mm shells. At 1431hrs an Israeli torpedo hit the "Liberty" midship, precisely where the signals intelligence systems were located. Twenty-five more Americans died.

Israeli gunboats circled the wounded "Liberty," firing at crewmen trying to fight the fires. At 1515, the crew were ordered to abandon ship. The Israeli warships closed and poured machine gun fire into the crowded life rafts, sinking two. As American sailors were being massacred in cold blood, a rescue mission by US Sixth Fleet carrier aircraft was mysteriously aborted on orders from the White House.

An hour after the attack, Israeli warships and planes returned. Commander McGonagle gave the order: "prepare to repel borders." But the Israelis, probably fearful of intervention by the US Sixth Fleet, departed. "Liberty" was left shattered but still defiant, her flag flying.

The Israeli attacks killed 34 US seamen and wounded 171 out of a crew of 297, the worst loss of American naval personnel from hostile action since World War II.

Less than an hour after the attack, Israel told Washington its forces had committed a "tragic error." Later, Israel claimed it had mistaken "Liberty" for an ancient Egyptian horse transport. US Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, and Joint Chiefs of Staff head, Admiral Thomas Moorer, insisted the Israeli attack was deliberate and designed to sink "Liberty." So did three CIA reports; one asserted Israel's Defense Minister, Gen. Moshe Dayan, had personally ordered the attack.

In contrast to American outrage over North Korea's assault on the intelligence ship "Pueblo," Iraq's mistaken missile strike on the USS "Stark," last fall's bombing of the USS "Cole" in Aden, and the recent US-China air incident, the savaging of "Liberty" was quickly hushed up by President Lyndon Johnson and Defense Secretary Robert McNamara.

The White House and Congress immediately accepted Israel's explanation and let the matter drop. Israel later paid a token reparation of US $6 million. There were reports two Israeli pilots who had refused to attack "Liberty" were jailed for 18 years.

Surviving "Liberty" crew members would not be silenced. They kept demanding an open inquiry and tried to tell their story of deliberate attack to the media. Israel's government worked behind the scenes to thwart these efforts, going so far as having American pro-Israel groups accuse "Liberty's" survivors of being "anti-Semites" and "Israel-haters." Major TV networks cancelled interviews with the crew. A book about the "Liberty" by crewman James Ennes' was dropped from distribution. The Israel lobby branded him "an Arab propagandist."

The attack on "Liberty" was fading into obscurity until last week, when intelligence expert James Bamford came out with Body of Secrets, his latest book about the National Security Agency. In a stunning revelation, Bamford writes that unknown to Israel, a US Navy EC-121 intelligence aircraft was flying high overhead the "Liberty," electronically recorded the attack. The US aircraft crew provides evidence that the Israeli pilots knew full well that they were attacking a US Navy ship flying the American flag.

Why did Israel try to sink a naval vessel of its benefactor and ally? Most likely because "Liberty's" intercepts flatly contradicted Israel's claim, made at the war's beginning on 5 June, that Egypt had attacked Israel, and that Israel's massive air assault on three Arab nations was in retaliation. In fact, Israel began the war by a devastating, Pearl-Harbor style surprise attack that caught the Arabs in bed and destroyed their entire air forces.

Israel was also preparing to attack Syria to seize its strategic Golan Heights. Washington warned Israel not to invade Syria, which had remained inactive while Israel fought Egypt. Bamford says Israel's offensive against Syria was abruptly postponed when "Liberty" appeared off Sinai, then launched once it was knocked out of action. Israel's claim that Syria had attacked it could have been disproved by "Liberty."

Most significant, "Liberty's" intercepts may have shown that Israel seized upon sharply rising Arab-Israeli tensions in May-June 1967 to launch a long-planned war to invade and annex the West Bank, Jerusalem, Golan and Sinai.

Far more shocking was Washington's response. Writes Bamford: "Despite the overwhelming evidence that Israel attacked the ship and killed American servicemen deliberately, the Johnson Administration and Congress covered up the entire incident." Why?

Domestic politics. Johnson, a man never noted for high moral values, preferred to cover up the attack rather than anger a key constituency and major financial backer of the Democratic Party. Congress was even less eager to touch this "third rail" issue.

Commander McGonagle was quietly awarded the Medal of Honor for his and his men's heroism – not in the White House, as is usual, but in an obscure ceremony at the Washington Navy Yard. Crew member's graves were inscribed, "died in the Eastern Mediterranean." as if they had be killed by disease, rather than hostile action.

A member of President Johnson's staff believed there was a more complex reason for the cover-up: Johnson offered Jewish liberals unconditional backing of Israel, and a cover-up of the "Liberty" attack, in exchange for the liberal toning down their strident criticism of his policies in the then raging Vietnam War.

Israel, which claims it fought a war of self defense in 1967 and had no prior territorial ambitions, will be much displeased by Bamford's revelations. Those who believe Israel illegally occupies the West Bank and Golan will be emboldened.

Much more important, the US government's long, disgraceful cover-up of the premeditated attack on "Liberty" has now burst into the open and demands full-scale investigation. After 34 years, the voices of "Liberty's" dead and wounded seamen must finally be heard.

House Hunting in the West Bank

Our Jerusalem correspondent finds that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's argument for allowing continued construction in settlements contains layers of deception.

GERSHOM GORENBERG | June 4, 2009 | web only

House Hunting in the West Bank

"It's Benjamin Netanyahu's fault. Because of his insistence on allowing for "natural growth" of West Bank settlements, I decided to go real-estate shopping. I called Amana, the settlement-building organization, and said I was interested in homes in Binyamin, the name used by settlers and Israeli officialdom for the piece of the West Bank directly north of Jerusalem.

The sales rep was so helpful I could hear her smile. At Shilo, a 30-year-old settlement north of Ramallah, construction has recently begun on a new development. For about $160,000, she said, I could get a 1,200-square-foot house. To American ears, that sounds small, but for a Jerusalem apartment-dweller, it would be a step up. Besides, that's a starter home; I could add a second floor now or later, she said.

At Eli, just up the road from Shilo, she offered homes in the center of the settlement and in outlying "neighborhoods." In Hayovel, for instance, she had a house for $115,000, with a completed first floor and the outer shell for the second floor. She didn't mention that the "neighborhood" of Hayovel is an illegal outpost, built partly on private Palestinian land. She offered me a similar house at a settlement called Ma'aleh Mikhmash. I thanked her and said I'd talk to my wife.

Ma'aleh Mikhmash happens to be where Knesset Member Otniel Schneller lives. Schneller, a former settlement leader, braved the criticism of the right to join the centrist Kadima Party. But at a recent meeting of Kadima's Knesset delegation, he reportedly attacked President Barack Obama's insistence on a full freeze on settlement building with no exceptions for "natural growth."

The U.S. demand was "immoral," Schneller said. He refused to agree to what he termed "an edict forbidding my daughters to give birth to my grandchildren." And Schneller belongs to a party that refused to join Netanyahu's coalition. Members of Netanyahu's Cabinet have been more caustic. Science Minister Daniel Hershkowitz said that Obama's demand was akin to "Pharaoh's demand that all firstborn sons be thrown into the Nile River."

To call this nonsense would be too forgiving. It is one part of the multilayered lie about "natural growth" of settlements.

Barack Obama has not demanded that women in settlements stop having babies. Rather, he has insisted that Israel stop construction in settlements, in line with its commitments under the 2003 road map for peace -- in line, in fact, with American opposition to settlement building since 1967. Consistent with the road map, and with the 2001 report written by George Mitchell, now Obama's Middle East envoy, the president has rejected Israeli insistence that construction continue to allow for "natural growth" of the settler population.

The deliberate twisting of Obama's stance is aimed at both a domestic and American audience. And it has confused some otherwise astute observers. Rep. Gary Ackerman, a Democrat from New York and chair of the House Subcommittee on the Middle East, said in press statement on Tuesday that he supported a settlement freeze but not one that "calls on Israeli families not to grow [or] get married. Telling people not to have children is unthinkable and inhumane."

Don't worry, Mr. Ackerman: The president is not talking about universal contraception for Israeli settlers. If there's any logic behind the rhetoric of Schneller, Hershkowitz, et al., it's a claim that people have the natural right to have a larger home in the same community if they expand their families, and to have their grown children live down the street. Why should that be true? West Bank settlements aren't ancient communities in isolated valleys hundreds of miles from the nearest town. They are recently established bedroom communities, within commuting distance of Israeli cities -- where many settlers in fact work.

Inside Israel, as in other developed countries, it's perfectly normal for people to change neighborhoods as their families grow. Grown children can't necessarily find or afford homes next door to their parents.

If settlers avoid self-deception, they have less reason to assume that their children will be able to buy homes down the block from them. Settlements were established as part of a deliberate and controversial gambit, an attempt to lock Israel into keeping the occupied territories. A settlement freeze or evacuation has always been a possibility. "What will we say to a family living with one child, which now has four or five children? That the children will move to Petah Tikva?" asked Hershkovitz, referring to one of Tel Aviv's large satellite cities. Well, yes. The whole family, or any grown children, could move inside Israel.

But focusing the argument for settlements around expanding families is itself a very deliberate distraction. Construction in settlements is not aimed only at accommodating children of settlers. It's aimed at drawing more Israelis across the Green Line boundary between Israel and the West Bank. When I spoke to the Amana office, the sales rep didn't ask me whether I'd grown up in a settlement or where I currently live. She offered me real-estate deals. Were I a right-winger, were I someone who preferred not to think about the disastrous implications of permanent Israeli rule of the West Bank, were I not me, her offers would have been very tempting. Instead of the apartment in which I've raised three kids in Jerusalem, I could get a house, a yard, and considerable change.

Settlement homes aren't quite the giveaways they were a few years ago. But they are still cheap, subsidized housing that continues to draw Israelis to move to the West Bank. In 2007, the last year for which there are official figures, the settlement population (not including annexed East Jerusalem) grew by 14,500 people. Of that growth, 37 percent was due to veteran Israelis or new immigrants moving to occupied territory. The "natural growth" argument is intended to cover up the continued, state-backed effort to encourage this migration.

The same official figures show over twice the rate of natural increase in the settlements than in Israel as a whole. Yes, the settler population is younger, meaning more women of childbearing age, and yes, much of it is Orthodox and puts a high value on large families. But people express their values more when the material conditions allow them to. Inexpensive housing makes it easier for younger couples to start having children and for families to be larger. That's especially true of the kind of housing available in many settlements: small, inexpensive homes that couples can buy when they don't have a lot of money, expecting to expand them later. The construction style is meant to "entice" people to come to settlements, as a realtor told me. Inside Israel such homes aren't available, she said. Put differently, even natural growth is unnaturally high in settlements. A construction freeze threatens that pattern.

Netanyahu and his partners don't want any of this to stop. They want settlements to keep growing, in order to block an Israeli withdrawal and a two-state solution. Obama wants a freeze as the first step toward a solution. The natural-growth argument is worse than a distraction; it's a scam. Let the buyer beware."

Thanks, Padraig - I wanted to make my own first comment, but You beat me to the punch - have You seen the addendum to the post, just added. If not please read it too.

Sheer insanity and as the esteemed Mr. Vonnegut says "and so it goes."
yeah, she's sorely missed. Unbelievably so, we never in all my time coversed about anything.

I have studied these matters for more than forty years - she may be a doctor, but i really would chomp on her re: israel.

By the way it saddens me deeply to watch ongoing events in Your home, and the plight of Aung Sun Suu Kyi is literally driving me nuts. We truly are on the "eve of destruction," as depicted in an early blog post in 2 videos and lyrics.

Thanks for coming back Padraig.
CRS has me in its grips, Larry as I cannot remember who either, but it IS undeniably true,

How come You NEVER visit me no mo - You got something against old(e) hippies?!?!>

You caught me in one of my rare playful moods.
Rated and understood from one old hippie to another. craziness and politics, that's a combination worth avoiding. The Middle East, precarious as it is, just plain scares me.
Larry, Larry - It was satire or my perverted sense of humor. You know that I know that You are the most loyal of the loyal. Hence the comment "caught at a playful moment - sorry didn't mean nothing bad.
If You mean the rainbow colored one, I don't think I do - please elaborate, my good buddy, Larry.
The truth is elusive. Thanks for enlightening.
some have played the victim for so long that they haven't even noticed that they are no longer the victim
Damn, Mark! Thanks for this revealing post. There’s a lot to sift through here.

RATED
It is so sad the loss of Rachel Corrie- she was a true hero. It was such a tragedy. May she rest in peace.
The article about the US Liberty. Was very interesting. I do have to say that we would probably be really surprised to find out what secrets and cover ups our government really does have under their sleeves. Anything to make them come out looking good is the way they think.
The whole concept and mentality that starts all these wars are so unbelievable and unreal it is pathetic. World blindness is all around us. So too speak.
I am not much on commenting about war and political pieces. Because I don't believe in war I find it totally illogical, irrational, anti-human, etc.. etc.. Personally war has always been a rich man's war and a poor man's fight. Doesn't matter what country it is all the same, for the rich man to get richer. It never solves anything, it only costs lives.
Great post !! Thank you
Sorry i missed Your comment mr Mustard - I NEVER call You mean - I just conveniently drop that part - You are as far from mean as I am from Mars.
PS - Mr. Mustard, Never expected You to have been a hippie - You come across to me as an extremely intelligent genteel academic.
Larry!!! $10/ounce, this feels like enhanced interrogation and waterboarding to me.

When and if it is available here, which is somewhat rarely, it is $100 to $200 a gram, AND 1/10th of a gram lands ya' in the slammer for stretch of 2 years max.
Its getting to the point where I'm taking EVERYTHING from our govt, with a grain of salt! This is disturbing to say the least! How'd I miss this post, dang! :)

Pawed, for damn!

Far too humble Padraig - You REALLY like to share a lot of joy as you pass through, and we ALL appreciate you for it.
I wish I could say how shocked I am, but nothing much surprises me these days.

What this post has done, is to make me cry, something that almost never happens.

It has also made me too angry to write any more.

It is, however, a brilliant post, which has told me an awful lot I didn't know before I read it.
