How To Protect Yourself From Online Credit Scams

Rate: 1 Flag

At a wake of the present financial situation where debts and bankruptcy cases are increasing day by day, consumers tend to become victims of credit card scams or credit counseling forgeries in the name of fast and easy credit repair or debt relief. Thus the debtors and consumers should be well informed about the various loopholes in this area of financial ambiguities.

How many times it happened that you get spam mails from different usernames which looks like an attractive advertisement claiming to clear your credit score or clean up your credit history in a blink of an eye? Or how many times have you received calls from financial agencies promising you to repair your credit accounts with unbelievable lucrative terms and offers? It is a common issue or incident with most of us when we get such alluring proposals where we can avail for a car loan, a home mortgage, insurance or even employment.  But as soon as the consumer makes the upfront and lump sum payment, the scam companies do nothing in reality or in worst case they just vanish after accumulating the money!

With the ever increasing household debts and a million of Americans filing for bankruptcy, consumers are desperately seeking the assistance of various kinds of credit repair solutions like debt-management, debt consolidation, debt settlement, credit counselors, credit repair companies, with heightened frequencies. This phenomenon has not only led to a development of several organizations with helpful intentions but also has given rise to a number of unscrupulous companies who are involved in fraudulences with unsuspecting debtors.

Thus, one has to be aware of these fake scams related to credit cards and debt reliefs in the name of debt settlement, debt consolidation or credit counseling, in order to avoid further debt traps. The following words have to be kept in mind to avoid any kind of credit card scams to stay away from further debts:

  • While going for debt settlement or debt consolidation or even credit counseling, deal with a reputable and professional agency with good work records and authenticity. You can find it out through state consumer agencies and the local Better Business Bureau. Non-profit counseling agencies are anytime better. Check whether the terms and conditions sound realistic to you. Make sure that the organization provides debt consolidation and payment services along with counseling education. One should carefully read all documents before signing in and should never pay any upfront fees or high monthly charges that may add extra load to your debts and bills. Always confirm the payments with your creditors.

  • In order to identify a credit repair scam, the consumer should stay alert of certain signs. He/she should know that there is trouble if the company asks the consumer to pay before the credit repair services are actually provided to him/her, without even informing the consumers about their legal rights, actions and free services. On top of that if the company recommends the consumer not to contact a credit bureau directly, then it’s possibly a scam. It can also ask the consumer to use a unique Employer Identification Number other than Social Security Number which is inconsistent. One has to be alert if the company advises the consumer to dispute their credit score information or suggests him/her to take illegal actions like creating a new credit identity etc., which can lead to fraud and prosecution.

One should remember that if on one hand there are several options for repairing credit to ward off indebtedness, then on the other hand there are also credit scams which may create further debts, which the consumer has to differentiate between. So are you all set to improve your credit score?
