Live every week like it's Shark Poetry Week

Rate: 11 Flag

It's the most wonderful time of the year -- Shark Week!

I love this venerable Discovery Channel tradition. Anything that involves the phrase "frenzied waters" is pretty much a sure thing in my book. Shark specials! Shark news! Why sharks are like serial killers!

Hell yeah!

And lest you think they are not sufficiently badass, the  Academy of American Poets is paying their own homage to the beasts of the sea, with a roundup of the finest shark related poetry ever put to pen, with appearances by Carl Sandburg, Walt Whitman, James Dickey, and other literary heavyweights.

The poems range from the literal to the metaphoric to the downright fanciful (Vivian Shipley's What To Do About Sharks details what to do "if a hammerhead or a great white makes waves during your workshop or poetry reading"). I find the whole shebang charming.

The pen is mightier than the sword, but how would it hold up against Jaws?

Shark related poetry!

Man, no wonder I never get any work done.
Yay, for sharks! They are probably the most misunderstood, yet efficient killing and eating machines on the planet. I've spent many years sport scuba diving and have had a few encounters, but none of them violent. They attack surfers and swimmers only because they mistake them for some sort of prey. That's why there are so many survivors of shark attacks. They shark bites and then goes ewwww. That tastes like crap.
Just the phrase "shark week!" alone agitates me into a frenzy--I do love it so!
I want to thank you so much for putting poetry on the front page! I wrote a spinoff, hoping to get some more of these poems read. All best, HB
I am ashamed to say that I came on this post by way of Hells Bells. If I had fav'ed you when I read about Ringo I wouldn't have missed it.
Thank you so much for the poetry link which is now a bookmark.
