- Bio
- I post sporadically because we have been travelling a lot – so far in 2009, we have been to Mexico, Alaska, Florida, Iceland, and Southern California, with Eastern Washington and San Francisco still coming up. For 2010 we have planned New York, Hawaii, and China. We’re not wealthy, just retired people who love to travel, so we make traveling a priority.
Occasionally, comments posted may be those of my husband Richard. He doesn’t want to create his own account, so I will be letting him use mine to read blogs. While I almost always agree with what he says, I wouldn’t always say it out loud myself. I can still hear my grandma telling me, “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything.”

"What did you do when the Earth was unraveling?"
Drew Dellinger is one of the poets who truly speaks for our times. Listen to his poem "Hieroglyphic Stairway":

I think it’s an age thing . . . or maybe it’s about respect.
I think it’s an age thing . . . . When I was in my 20’s, I absolutely hated it when waiters and grocery store clerks called me “ma’am.” It made me feel old. My Mom was “ma’am.” My grandmothers were “ma’am.” But at that time, in the mid… Read full post »
Why Bother
A chicken crosses where she may
It’s difficult with feet of clay
The road is fast and so darn wide
When your objective is the other side
But she will make it, if she’s able
And become chicken dinner on the table.
I wrote this poem some years ago, as… Read full post »
The Changing Face of Journalism
I graduated with a degree in journalism 33 years ago, and though it’s been almost 30 years since I worked in that field, I have watched the changes with both wonder and dismay. When I was at the University of Washington, Seattle was still a two-newspaper town (though that was already… Read full post »
What's in a name?
Well, you can get some interesting information on Wikipedia. For instance, did you know that the "E" in Wile E. Coyote stands for Ethelbert? Or that Donald Duck has a middle name? It's Fauntleroy, by the way. And Fred Flintstone's full name is Frederick Joseph Flintstone. Good to know, don't you… Read full post »
Holiday Green Beans
I'm new here, but I have been noticing that we post recipes on Tuesday. This one may sound strange to you, but it is oh so yummy. This was a staple on the Thanksgiving table when I was growing up, and it's even easier to make than that mushroom soup and… Read full post »
The Whales are Talking to Me, I Must Answer
Whales have been talking to me for awhile. Specifically, Beluga whales, which technically, along with Orcas, are members of the Dolphin family. Tacoma’s Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium used to have two Beluga whales. They were part of a breeding program. I would go often to the window in… Read full post »
Un-paving the Road to Hell
A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. - Margaret Mead
All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. - Edmund Burke
Un-paving the Road to Hell was the title for the sermon… Read full post »
And what is a Balanced Life, Really?
When I think of a life that is balanced, I think of spending appropriate amounts of time each day on my physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual health, in addition to allocating time for friends, family, and community. Certainly I have interests in all of these areas. Where I run into a… Read full post »
What does a Balanced Life have to do with Cats?
We saw the movie Julie & Julia last night, and I started thinking, what would I blog about? Since retiring a year and a half ago, I have been seeking the ever evasive "balanced life." So that will be my subject.
My husband asked me what I was doing, and I… Read full post »
