American Idol Final 4: Recap & Results Show

Rate: 32 Flag

 All 4

The American Idol Final Four

I was going to start off by eating some humble pie due to last week’s bizarre results show where Adam supposedly came in second to last.  I was really ready to do that.  But then I woke up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat.  Thoughts of conspiracy, ratings desperation and the Great American Idol Hoax came to mind.

I have CSI on the case.  And that guy from To Catch A Predator, yeah, that Chris Hanson guy.  I’m still not believing that Adam was in the bottom two.  I mean really.  You think I’m that gullible?  While you’re at it, try telling me that Randy isn’t black and Paula is really a Paul.   See what I mean?  Not plausible.  Not possible.  None of it.

This could be a very small recap.  The reason?  Adam was the only one that showed up to compete tonight.  Seriously, the others were no shows.  Or injured with some kind of brain damage when the TOWER on the set EXPLODED during dress rehearsal (does anyone know the whereabouts of Matt or Anoop…wouldn’t put it past them).

Or you could put it this way.  Kris, Allison and Danny showed up tonight and had performances ranging from OK to Just OK to inflicting permanent ear damage to the American Idol audience and those of us who keep our TV volumes up too high (thanks Danny).  Adam showed up as the guest celebrity for the week.

It was Rock ‘n Roll week and I should have passed the torch to someone a little more knowledgeable.  I am pathetic when it comes to Rock ‘n Roll…one of the big regrets of my life. Instead of going to hard rock concerts like any good repressed Catholic school girl did when she finally escaped to the freedoms of college, I added insult to injury and was going to bible studies instead.

Slash

Slash was the guest celebrity.  Who is Slash?  Did they pick “Slash” as a premonition to Danny’s last set of notes?  I really think Slash is Howard Stern on tranquilizers with a guitar.  I mean really, didn’t anyone else notice the eerie resemblance?  Look, see for yourself.

 howard Stern

I don’t know who Slash is or Guns ‘n Daisies or Lilies or Roses, whatever that band is.  Thank God I was familiar with the Beatles, but they were around long before my teenage rebellion got traded in for a christian conversion.   They say that youth is wasted on the young and they’re not kidding.  Like Danny, I just wasn’t in my element tonight but I’ll do my best.

So, take my rock ‘n roll recap with the proverbial grain of salt with a pinch of pity on it.  When it comes to rock ‘n roll, I don’t know what the hell I’m talking about.

First up:

 rock

ADAM! Adam sang A Whole Lot of Love and he is.  Okay all you Adam doubters, you cynics, you critics…come on, just try to whine to me once again, like you’ve tried week after week, that that was a cheesy over the top screechy Broadway performance. Just try but I’m not that rock’n’ roll dumb that I 'm not 100% confident when I say that Adam rocked the house.  This guy has such a great stage presence, such a strong sense of command. You could hear a loud collective combo uggggh/sigh from the other contestants behind the stage.  They knew they were screwed before they even had the chance to perform.

 AI judges

The Judges:  Simon, Kara, Paula and Randy (Randy's been on Facebook way too much)

Judges Table:

Randy:  “No one will see you and ever think of Broadway.  You and Slash could make a record.  You’re a ROCK STAR!”

Kara (saccharin, that’s it…plasticky and sugary and slightly desperate):  “You are NOT a ROCK STAR…YOU ARE A ROCK GOD!”  Isn’t that a little blasphemous?  Just a titch irreverent?

Paula said that Adam was “a whole lot of perfect”.  Hello!  Isn’t that what I’ve been saying for weeks?  Perfect Adam this, perfect Adam that.

Simon:  Simon said that the biggest problem with Adam’s song was that no one would be able to top it.   Simon proved once again to be prophetic.

Adam' eyes

(Terrible picture of Adam, terrible)

And did anyone notice Adam’s EYES last night?  Wish I could find a close up of those eyes…with the green underliner and his azure blue eyes accented perfectly with the dark black hair.  Stunning really.  I mean I’m not a fan of makeup on men, but for Whole Lot of Perfect Adam, it works.

 Allison

(I swear there were big blue streaks in her hair)

ALLISON.  Whoa!  Now her hair is pinker, longer and has BLUE STREAKS.  She revealed that she went to Adam’s hairdresser.  Silly naïve girl.  Doesn’t she realize that Adam’s hairdresser probably isn’t trying to make one of his rivals look good?!  However, Allison’s performance was really good.  She continues to blow me away for her age.  But speaking of age, I don’t mean to be a broken record, but she just looks so old.  I don’t know why, but it makes me kind of sad.

Judges Table:

Randy:  “Yo, Allison, check it.  Didn’t like the song choice.”  Picky picky.

Kara:  “Uh, your performance was ok but I didn’t see your personality in the performance.  Not much originality.”.  Duh Karla…Simon’s been telling her that for weeks. Just a bit too copycatish with the feedback.

Paula:  “Fearless”.   Paula, fearless?  Did we say “fearless”?  Don’t know about that one.

Simon: “ Staggering, terrific vocal, not much originality!”  Ahem, see what I mean?  Kara needs to quit being such a Simon wannabee.

 Danny and Kris

(Danny and Kris...Kris starting to look really sad)

Duet time:  Okay, am I the only one who hated this idea?  Like really really hated it.  I don’t care how good any of them were, well except for Adam and Allison who together were truly far out and in a league of their own.  But back to the first duet…Kris and Danny.  Is it me, or are those two starting to look like identical twins?

I can’t even bother with the duet…to me it seemed like a giant space killer.  The producers are now guilty of unoriginality, as well as not being able to keep the show going in a timely fashion as it once again went over time and my DVR recording finished before the actual show.

Simon was brutal when he said that Danny was better than Kris.

Kris allen

(Kris, trying just a little too hard)

KRIS:  Kris looked all dejected and sad.  Where’s is Linus’s blanket when you need it?  He didn’t wike what wittle Simon said when he said that Wanny was wetter than Wris.

Poor Wris…. I just wanted to wrap him in my arms and give him a big giant hug.

Kris sang Come Together.  He didn’t.  And after he didn’t, Kris admitted to wanting to pee in his pants when singing next to Stash (what kind I’m wondering).  That kid needs some adult diapers and quick!  We don’t need yet another accident on the stage!

Judges Table:

Randy:  “Uh, you, uh, you sang dude.  You sang”.  Randy woosed out.

Kara:  “Not a great performance.” If she leans over any farther with those pouty lips, Sheldon the Wonderhorse might get excited.

Paula:  “I liked it”.  (What a surprise.)

Simon: “ It was like eating ice for lunch.  Leaves you with nothing to remember afterwards.  Boring song.”  My thoughts exactly!). Simon continues...”Let me remind you that I said that Adam’s performance was unbeatable and I’m right”.

Kris looked droopy and sad.  If I didn’t love Simon so much, I’d say he should be charged with child abuse.

 Danny

(Ugghhh!  My poor wittle ears!)

DANNY:  Dream On…I would have liked to have been dreaming but then some horrible murderous vile screaming entered the living room and I was startled awake.  What was that?  Did someone put on a rerun of Psycho?  Once again Simon and I were right on track.  Simon said listening to the last note was like watching a horror movie.  I was nodding my head vehemently in agreement.  I had images of that poor Janet Leigh Psycho lady being stabbed in the shower at the Motel 6.

Danny will be safe due to the Darling Danny factor.  There’s jut something so appealing about him, even when he’s shrieking and looks terribly uncomfortable with the whole hot rocker routine.  But those last set of notes.  Painful, really painful.

I can't even do the Judge's Table on Danny.  My ears were clogged.  I didn't hear what they said, but I'm pretty sure they agreed with me.

The evening mercifully ended with the Allison/Adam duet that saved Allison’s hide.

Adam and Allison

(Allison thanking Adam for saving her sweet 17 year old tush)

Judge’s Table:

Randy:  “That was the bong!”  Randy still has 420 on the brain.

Kara:  “ROCK GOD!”  ROCK GODDESS!!”  Sorry but the woman needs to stop pointing like that.  She was scaring me.  (Oh she was pleased with herself for that line.  Got all flushed, spit it out and leaned back in her chair, all perked up with some kind of titillation…from what I don’t know…perhaps the sound of her own voice).

Paula:  Gush.  Gush.  “A perfect marriage!”   Geez, why can’t people accept that Adam is GAY!  First of all, he lives in California where ironically homophobia runs rampant and the majority of Californians don’t think that Adam should be married ever.  No perfect marriage in Adam’s near future.   Unless he marries Allison.  Where I come from, this wouldn’t be called “marriage”,  it’d be called statutory rape.

Recap within the recap:  It’s getting down to the wire.  The excitement is building!  Who is the country going to vote for?  WHO WILL BE THE NEXT AMERICAN IDOL?  WHO WILL STAY?  WHO WILL GO?

The answer seems so obvious. A no brainer.  Right?

Well, just remember.  This is the same country that elected Bush for 2 terms.  ANYTHING is possible when the decision is left at the hands of the American public.  Let’s just hope that more blue states vote than red.

Kris going home

And before I go, I hate to say this Kris, but on tonight's result show, America will be saying, NIGHTY NIGHT.

 ********AMERICAN IDOL UPDATE:  RESULTS SHOW********

I don’t know why any of you guys read this.  Seriously.  I’m never right.  Week after week after week.  So here I am once again reporting that my pick of Kris being the one to go home was wrong.

KRIS IS SAFE!  His family was going nuts.  Kris was stunned!  The audience was stunned!  The judges had big smiles on their faces.  What the heck is going on?

So, it’s down to Adam, Danny and Allison.   And the rest is history.

Allison is going home.

Honestly, this just doesn’t feel right.  She was second to Adam, with a fantastic voice and range hard to be matched.  Her farewell song, the one she sang last night, oh yeah, Cry Baby was truly spectacular.  Allison will be missed.  And next week, parents of tweens who are addicted to Kris, need to hide all their kid’s cell phones.  Those kids are out of control.

See you next Tuesday for American Idol:  TWO MEN AND A BABY

Adam was WOW and I voted several times. denese
Adam is adorable, but looks like he'll have to keep up the frantic running-around-on-stage or he'll blow up. And squinty little eyes NEED some make-up.

But in the talent and performance area, well, it's ludicrous to have him there with those weenies.

Speaking of which, not that I'd notice or anything, but he seemed to have a particularly prominent, um, package or whatever the term is during the duet in those stripey pants...
I voted ... YES I VOTED MORE THAN ONCE!!! America simply cannot be trusted with this decision (as proven last week). I was so sad when Danny outsang Kris in the duet ... that was a heartbreaker. But really, it's like Kris just gave up this week. He was so FLAT~ sad, sad, sad. I LOVED the duet with Adam & Allison and I really hope she floats through. I hated Danny's "Dream On" from start to finish ... I hope he's adios~!
Thanks for the update Mare ... and I agree about that Adam picture ... actually, he looked a little creepy all night long ... maybe it was that blue-green eye makeup??? lol~
I didn't watch it again and don't plan on it, but I so admire your passion for this Adam guy. No doubt, win or lose he'll make it. They all most likely will. That's one of the things that has turned me off the show. I did see the revelations the last few days that Paula was indeed battling Rx drug addiction and has Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, something I know a lot about and know how painful it is. I will therefore not bash her anymore. Knowing that she has finally acknowledged the on-going problem and is trying to get help leaves me with compassion for her. I wish her well. The best thing she can do for herself is leave that show.

Hahaha! I love Paula's boobs. That said, Adam killed (that's Rock for, did real good, Mary) And Allison did very well in my eyes. 2nd place in my book. Danny's worst performance and Kris didn't do himself any favors last night. It's all about popularity now, with talent taking a back seat, although Adam is truly above the rest in that category, he may be TOO perfect which can be a turn off to some people. He's almost too sure of himself.
I see a hint of arrogance that pokes me in a bad way. Flaunt it if you got it, but not in a popularity contest. Maybe best to be humble.
Getting down to the wire. Great post, Mary!

Guns ‘n Daisies, hehehehehe!
Mary ... you are way too hard on these folks. What we have is thre highest level of talent that this show has ever seen. Anoop would have been competitive during any other year. Any of these four, would have been serious contenders in the finals during any other year. I personally think Danny was really good last night (except for that last note.) Kris is consistent and Allison is a genuine phenom. Unfortunately, Adam is exactly what this show was designed to find. He should walk away with it... but with voters doing what they do... don't be surprised at anything from this day forward. Daughtry comes back this evening. He didn't win either, and he was so obviously the star of the show back then.
Nice wrap-up. I'm not sure that Danny will survive that horrible screech though. I thought Kris did a good job with the Beatles song. If Adam wins, it would only be the second time in the whole 8 years of AI that the person who really deserves to win wins. The first being Kelly Clarkson.
Was at a book group meeting last night (wonderful little book called Elegance of the Hedgehog, nothing to do with animals, more philosophy---but really, a great read), so missed the show, but knew you'd recap.

Sounds like Adam is pulling away. But remember another great singer from a couple of years ago --Melinda Dolittle. She was the greatest singer they have ever had there, imo, and she was voted off third or fourth. The kiddies take over the voting. Anyway, thanks for the fun ride once again.
You are the best AI recapper in the world and you deserve to go on tour with Adam and Alison and live blog for the masses and all your fans at OS.
I like Adam but I'm pulling for Allison. I can never resist the under dog. Good post!

I'm still rooting for Kris. Rock simply wasn't his forte and everyone knows that. He's more artist than any of the others who are merely performers. And because he's an "artist" he probably won't win.

And then there's the controversy with Danny Boy and his alleged secret alliance/contract with Lens Crafters glassware. I think he gets booted off.

Allison just kind of scares me. She's only 17? If she wins, will she be able to handle it all? What will it do to her???

Adam may win. But I don't think it was a "conspiracy" he was placed second from the bottom the week before last. He scares people, isn't mainstream, and appeals to a limited audience.
Maybe I'm just a cynic, but I have had this feeling that Adam is more actor who can seriously sing playing rock star than actual rock star. I can't shake that feeling about him and it showed last night. Yeah, his vocals were great -- but it was sooo over the top. And honestly, it didn't have much originality either. I actually liked Kris's version of Come Together, I thought it fit him. And Allison is born to sing Janis Joplin . . .maybe she should have sang "Me & Bobby McGee" instead.
I was impressed by Adam and Alison...period. You could have slept through the performance of Chris, and Danny, a tad pitchy and loud. Just MHO.
Still. Not. Liking. This. Group.

But, I'm loving your posts on the subject.
I don't think Adam will win. He's the best for sure, but American Idol is about ratings, and voting him off will be all over the news for at least until the next show.
I'm not sure. But next show it's either Kris (60% sure) or Adam(39% sure). There's always that 1% fluke for Allison or Danny but...the suspense is killing me! Can't they just get it over with now?
In a hurry so this will be brief and terse, sadly.
Worst episode this season! Hard Rock not my deal at all!
Hated the over the top makeup hair and costumes on Adam and Allison, yet their duet saved the night.
Kris overshadowed by Danny in their duet left me as flat as Kris sounded. Disappointed for Kris. Not a fan of Danny's but he has moved ahead of Kris vocally.
For me, the duets were the only palatable vocals of the night. Nice touch and Adam and Allison did rock the show's close.
It couldn't come too soon for me.
Last night's AI was a veritable migraine taking hold. Painful.
I don't know if Danny or Kris will be going away tonight, but the question is--does it matter? It's between Adam and Allison with Allison fading in the finish. Arguably their duet was the best thing of the night. Adam didn't do that well last week for 2 reasons, I think. One, he was perhaps just a bit too over the top and came in at about 90% while Danny and Allison each came in at about 105%.
And notice something about Adam--watch his facial expressions. Is he doing an Elvis, especially with the lip curls? Watch and see what you think.
Schlock and roll is more like it.
I thought Adam and Allison were some of the best performances in 8 years of this show! Staggering vocals for both of them. I love these recaps.
Maybe Allison should start working on Etta James' "At Last" for the finals. Do you think that might give her a chance?
Liking the group more than I did earlier in the season. Seeing a bit more talent than I thought was there.

But Adam is so much better than the others...it should be a walk-over for him.

Unfortunately...the voting public does not always get things right! The bionic booty got axed in a major upset on DWTS...so anything can still happen.

Good show. I'm enjoying it.

Great recap, Mary. You are bong!
love love loved it! I like your posts more than the show itself! You should write for Entertainment Weekly!!!
Frank, I am still not finding the Adam love.
Speaking for me and only me!!
Allison all the way.
Adam, I don't get it. I am not clicking. I know I am ornery, but....what is it about him ? I thought he was screaming. His voice does not have character, it works technically, but no character. I like my pop/rock singers to have a certain quirk. He does not have it. He is like the kid that gets 800's on the SATs but has not street smarts.
He seems to be a melange of consultants, sort of creating this persona. Nothing feels authentic about him. Of course it could be my extreme Emo distaste. But, he feels like he could be a dime a dozen in LA.

Now I will go and get some body armor to not get savaged.
I think you are so cute that you should win.
I have never seen one episode of this show, but if there are big pouty lips involved, I may have to rethink this.
Dream On is one of my favorite songs of the period - I have a distinct memory of listening to it/singin it in the back seat of a 1971 silver Firebird with a white top (no, not That way - there were like five of us in this car). And Danny's final screetch was actually amazingly Awful. It wasn't the song for him, in any event. He should have done Walk This Way instead.

And when I heard that it was duet night I was absolutely Certain that the finale would be Adam and Allison doing a Meatloaf song (like Paradise by the Dashboard Light or I'd Do Anything For Love). But No, they had to do Slow Ride (by Foghat) instead, which was good, just not great. Meatloaf would have been so much Better. I'll bet he wouldn't give them the clearance to do it. He's very protective of his music.

Um, as you can tell, on the way to Bible study on Wednesday nights and teaching the little kids the Bible on Sundays, I'd be rocking out in the car, screaming Queen, Aerosmith, Boston, Ted Nugent, etc., out the window....
"Once again Simon and I were right on track. "

If that's so true how come I don't love Simon and I do love you? Just sayin'.

I didn't really dig Adam's performance that much. Maybe 'cause I've never been a Zeppelin fan. I actually really liked Chris' "Come Together".
I just think he's great (Adam).

But the public is...umm...unreliable.
I've said enough about Adam on these posts, and I've vowed to Mary that I would cut him some slack this week. So I'm going to try and sum up my thoughts in two words: Chris Daughtry. Voted off top four in his season. Ironically, the guest star tonight.

If Adam suffers a similar fate, here's the worst that will happen. America will have the possibility of a young Latina rock star, which you guys could really use with all the damage done to that community by Jennifer Lopez.

So, please, try and look on the bright side.
My comments are now totally jaded by my children (the 8 and 10 yr olds) "Wow, Cara looks so goth tonight." "Adam's eyes are glowing. Do you like him mom? I think I like him" 'Who is Slash? He's scary." "Allison's hair is awesome." "Mom, there's your boyfriend Kris. (giggle, giggle, sideways glance from husband)" "How can you not like Danny, everyone likes Danny." "Why did Danny scream like that?" "I'm going to bed. " ( 8 yr old bails at half time) I think we were all a little bored after Adam made his mark. Woke back up when he and Allison did the duet. I think it's Kris' turn to say goodbye...sigh.
ok ok ok ok ok.....last night belonged to Adam. do i like him yet? Nope! I'm with Stellaa all the way. He's plastic. madeup. If per chance he looses, that will be why. I was sad for our local boy. Kris is probably bye bye, but we'll see. Hard rock is not his genre. Allison was good but she is just too damn young for this title. Then there's Danny. I love that boy. Hated his last note, too, but I still love the boy. I hate that the drama of the show has flown out the window. If Adam got voted off (ain't gonna happen) then it would be fun to watch these final weeks. oh well. The only race is for second place. DANNY!!! (but this entire state would go bonkers if Kris makes it.)
I think you really need some help Mary. :^)
I can't stand classic rock. And whenever a radio station "gets the Led out" I search for the nearest sledgehammer. The only redeeming part of last night was Adam and those intense, guy-lined eyes - looking to the left, looking to the right and making those little 14 year old screaming girls want him when all he wants is Kris Allen in a leather thong.

Worst moment of the night was the Danny screech, but it's the first time I really thought he peeked out from behind his "I'm going to win because I'm likable and aggrieved" screen. Giving him mad props for that, dawg.

Kris - so cute. But can't get past the flounder mouth. Creeps me out.

Allison - so cute. Want her to stick around and tell Simon to shove his "you have no personality" schtick up his arse. The fact that she isn't unwatchably annoying is all the personality I need from a 17-year old.
The only place for "Slow Ride" is at the sand pits when everyone is standing around getting drunk and no one is older than nineteen. Poor choice for AI.

Slash is awesome. It's amazing he's still alive.

Adam is the best by far.

Alison is adequate, but even in the briefest interview she comes across as not that smart. Here I am being very kind.

Kris and Danny are each annoyingly too perfect in their own way.

If Adam isn't in the final, then I and many others will not be watching.
Oh Knightwriter, you are so perfectly on. And I love that you can say things I can't say about Adam because I would sound like a raging homophobe. But, but...is there anyone else out there who think he looks a little too much like that girl on the L Word who was going through a sex change operation?

There are just these moments when I feel like I'm watching the girls put on a show. And while I love queer cabaret as much as the next middle age fag hag, I kind of wish he'd stick to Tears For Fears...maybe Jeff Buckley or something. But Zeppelin? There's no way you can truly enjoy that without wrapping it up in a blanket of irony, and I'd like to see him get real for one week.

In defense of Simon, which I don't do often. I don't remember him ever saying Allison had no personality. He said she lacked confidence. This was all Kara's imaginary issue to detract from the fact that she has no personality, which is why she has to keep using all kinds of stale industry terminology. If Allison could just accidently kick her in the bobble head with steel toed boots, I think that would really be nice Idol moment.
very entertaining, Mary.
Juliet, I know that you and I are in the minority, but you hit on something, yet he does not have that David Bowie edge, he is a bit school marmy and teenie bopperish.

Also, about time we have a Latina get out there and rock our shoes off.

So, the battle lines are drawn: all the world loving Adam and a small group routing for Allison.

If we all agreed this would be so boring.
Denese: You are a wise and sensible person.

Myriad: Intriguing comments about Adam. For the sake of investigative journalism at its best, I'll have to go take another look at Adam in the stripey pants...geez, this job can be so hard!

irritatingmom: You and I were voting up a storm last night. Yeah, Kris seemed sad from the get go. So defeated when Simon said Danny was better. Seemed to kind of give up. I'm also thinking there's a chance Danny will be voted off tonight. I doubt it, but I think anything is possible.

Kind of Blue: I admire your resilience in reading my long drawn out sleep-deprived posts about a show you hate! As for Paula, I agree. Before she made her confession about her addiction to Percocet and other painkillers for 12 years, and her stint in rehab, I will never joke again about how I suspected her sometimes crazy behavior was a combo of percocet and wine (a very pleasant combination I might add if you insist on getting addicted to something). Although I will point out that I called that one years ago (goody goody for me).

Michael: Well thanks for sharing that little tidbit about your fondess for Paula's breasts. Enlightening. I don't see the arrogance in Adam. I'm trying to, but I don't see it. He always seems genuinely surprised with the standing ovations and accolades and seems to handle them with grace. Thanks for hanging in there with these recaps, especially since mom is gone!

Harp: I agree with you 100%. I am being too hard on them mainly cuz it's kind of fun and this is the only outlet I really let myself be catty so I err on the side of taking little harmless swipes meant only to entertain in the most superficial of ways. They are all incredibly talented and with this group, I think we'll be hearing from all 4 of them for many years to come. Thanks for your comment!

singpretty: The more I think about it, the more I think it is a possibility that Danny will go tonight because of that screech that is still ringing in my ears. You're right too about the winners. Taylor Hicks? Jordan what's her name? The others I can't even remember their names...except David Cook. I loved David Cook...still do (his brother passed away this week..that sucks). Thanks for your comment!

Lea: Hey, thanks for the book rec...I'm always looking for a new one. I actually read somewhere last night where the audience is getting OLDER for American Idol so I'm not so sure it's up to the tweens anymore. It'll be interesting to see if there is a surprise tonight. Thanks so much for reading even though you missed the show.

aim: I love you! Will you be my agent?

Zumi: Sounds like you might be happy either way. I'd love to see an Adam/Allison final. I didn't think it would happen, always thought it would be Adam/Danny but after those horrible noises coming out of Danny's mouth last night, not so sure. It will not be right if Allison gets voted off tonight. Thanks for your comment.

From the Midwest: Hmmm, isn't Kris from the Midwest? He certainly has a large fan base so we'll find out tonight. So you're in denial about Kris and I'm in denial about Adam being in second place last week. Sometimes I like denial. It feels good :)

Aunt Shell: This is what's so great about the show...all the different ways people perceive each singer, each for their own valid reasons. Sounds like the judges thought Allison should have sang a different song. What do I know? I liked it. I can see your point about Adam, but then I think of performers like KISS and Steven Tyler. I don't care for the rock style myself...I loved Mad World...that's how I like it, but what do I know? Thanks for taking the time!

Buffy: I agree...Adam and Allison really stood out. I do think Allison got lucky by being able to do a duet with Adam.

Devin: Patience and a positive attitude are needed in great measure right now. I understand about the ratings. Business is business. But I'm naive enough to think that the voters decide. But then when I think of that and how much bias and homophobia there is towards gay people, I ask myself, "Is American ready for a gay American Idol?" Why not. We're on a roll starting with a black President. Thanks for your comment.

Just Cathy: Hmmm...are you still suffering from some god awful virus that may be making you a little feverish and headachey? Listen to your little much younger sister for once. Take 2 aspirin and call me in the morning.

Walter: I hope you're right about Adam and Allison...I still think she'll be voted off before the final 2. The lip curl thing...I did notice that last night and have definitely noticed the Elvis look a like thing. I try to ignore that because I was never a fan of Elvis.

jimgalt: Oh that's good. Love it. "Schlock and rock". And that's just Kara.

Ariana: I also loved their vocals and thank you for loving the recap. Since I spend an unbalanced and unhealthy amount of time writing them, that feedback always helps.

Walter: At last? I don't know. Seems a little too "old" for me and Allison doesn't need any more aging going on. But maybe she could Janis Joplin it up.

Frank: Can you please talk some sense into your sister? I love her and we have so much in common, but this causing tension in the friendship. I don't watch DWTS but my alert sister Cathy told me about the upset last week. Anything can happen, especially if AI is rigging the results...thanks for coming by. I always look forward to your comments.

Cfranc: Thank you! Can you be my agent?

Stellaa: Thank God you clarified that you were only speaking for YOU. All hell could have broken lose. Hey, no savagery here. This is a personal taste thing. You say "potauto" and I say "potato". I've always worshipped the ground Barbra Streisand walks on but so many people hate her. And I can see why Adam bugs you. Honestly, I don't care for his appearance, but when I close my eyes and listen to his voice, that's what hooks me. You could be right about him being a dime a dozen in LA. If he's so good, why hasn't he been snatched up? He's been in LA trying to make it for years. I still love him and I appreciate you disagreeing.

Lisa Solod Warren: Are you talking to Kris? Cuz he's kind of the only cute one on the show. Glad you're feeling better (I'm hoping you're feeling better).

Sheldon: I thought you might be interested. You and Kara...I can see it, really I can. You'll have to deal the wife of course.

Connie: See this is why YOU should have done this recap, not me. I have no idea what you are talking about...Meatloaf (I've heard of him but no idea of the music), Paradise, Queen, Boston...I'm taking all your word for it. Bible studies, children and singing rock songs out the window...not such a bad combination. Thanks for your great comment.

Cap'n: Your impeccable taste highlights that yes, there are times when Simon and I are on the same track...many times as a matter off act. But, you know, what can I say. What you said makes perfect sense!

Devin: Yes, the public is unreliable for a number of reason. Might be interesting to do a study on how many people that vote for their particular favorite on American Idol also voted for George Bush twice. That could be very telling.

Juliet: Okay, since you're being so gracious, I'll try. I had vowed to myself if Adam gets voted off tonight or next week, I'm done. No more recaps, no more American Idol...maybe EVER. But it is good to look at the bright side of things, so you're right it wouldn't be horrible if Allison ended up in the finale, but it would be right. I might have to go picket Fox which is something I've wanted to do for a long time anyway! (Where did your post go?)

mamoore: Your children are corrupting you! I think Kris may be going home, but after last week, I'm not so sure anymore. Thanks for coming back every week. I love your comments.

Fabflamingo: What is it going to take to get you to see the light? Well, in the meantime, maybe Danny will go tonight and you can see your Kris go for yet another week. You make a point about the genre of music. There' sno way Kris and Danny could do rock and really pull it off. It's just not in them, and that's the biggest part of this show that is so unfair. They are forced to perform in ways that aren't true to them. Thank you!

Lonnie: Do ya think? Duh!

knightwriter: Hmmm...sure you don't want to do the recap next week? I love the way you write! Simon actually said in an interview this week that he wishes more contestants spoke back to him. Allison did and he commended her for it. Glad you also appreciated Adam's intense eyes...I was mesmerized by them. Thanks for another great AI comment.

neilpaul: In order that they were listed: I agree, don't know him,
agree, agree, agree, and agree (except I'm morally obligated to watch the finale due to my obligation to my rabid AI fans).

Juliet: Knightwriter does have a great way with words doesn't he? But I'm pretty sure he's an Adam fan. Adam's Mad World was my absolute favorite...I'd love him to sing another song like that. Now I'm curious about Simon never saying anything about her personality. I'm not sure he ever said the actual word "personality" but I seem to recall him saying several times that he didn't know who she was. So different words, same concept. She is just 17...I can't imagine the pressure. She handles it extremely well. Thanks for coming back...

Denise: Thank you!
Stellaa: Yes, I agree that it would be totally boring if we all agreed. No way that would happen with this group of people. I again see what your saying about Adam's appearance, but his voice just on his own really is spectacular.
m.a.h.: I can't believe I skipped over you! Very unintentional on my part, or unconscious. Perhaps deep seeded resentment that you don't love AI as much as me. I'll have to ponder this. Thanks though for being so gracious as to read and comment about something you really could care less about. That is much appreciated.
Yes, please don't mistake my comments about Adam as anything but pure and unabashed idolatry. I heart him, like Danny Gokey hearts those eyeglasses he's been schilling for. He's my little Lambert-chop.
Mary. I had to take the post down. Once you get attacked by the third humorless Beatles fan, you know there's an infestation on the way....And anyways it was mostly a joke for your benefit, to keep you company on the thankless task you've taken on. I couldn't do it, even for three hours.
knighwriter: Glad you confirmed your love for Adam, I would have bet big bucks my memory was serving me well. Love the comment about Danny's glasses...I had glossed over that story and now need to go back and "investigate" some more. You look into Adam's striped pants phenomenon and I'll find an expose on the glasses :)

Juliet: You were being attacked???? Well that just makes me mad. And I do thank you. It was very fun last night as I was having kind of a blank on how to write this post, to be diverted by your peace pipe post and video on, what was his name, Mamoose? I liked him, he was good.
Just to clear this up. I never meant to imply that Knightwriter was saying anything negative about Adam.

It's just that if I said those things they would sound negative. Probaby because I don't like his hard rock performances...I enjoy the irony. But I think he's got talent that is being sapped by trying to be something that he's not: Mick Jagger, Steppenwolf, Johnny Cash, Robert Plant. It just feels more like a theatre performance than a musical performance. Which is fine if you're a big theatre fan. I'm more of a music fan.
Juliet, I can only speak for myself. I never for a moment thought you were implying that knightwriter was being negative towards Adam. I get what you're saying and you make a good distinction. I'm a person who saw RENT 12 times between Broadway, London and Denver. Probably why I love Adam so much. He would make a brilliant Roger.
There we go. We've figured the area of tension. Because American Idol is theatre. And really pure music fans should stay away, because they don't get the whole, "Hey kids. Let's put on a show in one week, spirit. And I get that. But I lean towards the music side of it.

It's Mookie Morris, Canadian Idol runner up last year, doing a better job than Kris singing Come Together. Here's the video if anyone wants to see it. And please don't pester me Beatles fans, (especially since the Beatles ripped a good third of that song off of Chuck Berry's You Can't Catch Me!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDXgrEpLGm0
Is it just me, or does Adam look like the love child of Kurt Russell and Elvis Presley? That said, he consistently has been the most original entertainer since the beginning, though I will admit I wasn't blown away by his performance last night, nor by any of the performers. Hell, this classic rock category was a waste overall.

As for the finish: Danny wins, Adam is second, Kris a distant third, and Allison out tonight.
kris will be tossed. if adam doesn't win (who in their right mind thinks this won't happen?) the show ain't dope.... to borrow from Randy.
Late breaking news from the kids elementary school...Danny is the big fav followed closely by Allison. And don't fear Mary, I am still all about Adam...with just a tiny crush on Kris on the side.
Hi Mary--thanks for inviting me over to your review. Very funny! I put my comment back on my post as well--here it is again in case you don't get back to mine to read it!

I agree--Danny's solo song was an absolute train wreck last night. I like the sound of his voice, but it really is just not suited for that song. His last note (the scream) was horrendous. I really like Kris, don't get me wrong. He's talented and darling. I love, love, love when he changes up songs like "She Works Hard for the Money." Now that was cool. But, last night he just seemed defeated to start out with. The solo wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special. I would like to see him stay, but I'm thinking that Alison is the only girl (so anyone who wants to vote for a girl will have to vote for her), plus Adam sang the duet with her and really helped her out there. Danny was worse than Kris on the solo last night, but according to Simon, better than Kris on the duet. More importantly, he has that dead wife. Sympathy gets you very far on that show it seems. Poor Kris, his wife is alive and well. LOL
Yes--so funny "Cross Commenting"--and my last name is Cross! Ha! Alison has the bigger range, this is true--her voice covers more octives so she can sing way down low and also up high (not high, but high compared to her low). Kris's range is smaller. I think his talent lies in his ability to arrange music and be creative with melody, etc. Alison sticks more to how things are written and that's safer for her. I think she's got the better voice and it is a singing competition. If it was an arranging competition, Kris would beat out Alison (and Danny, but maybe not Adam--he's pretty good at that stuff, too and his range is HUGE). I agree--much more fun to concentrate on this than say, the economy or the war. Thank goodness for diversions or we'd all be on Prozac.
Juliet: Yeah, the mystery is solved! I kind of figured out I don't know what I'm talking about when I read a post that Rick Lucke wrote about American Idol. We both realized that because I'm no music major, I base my opinions on feelings. He hears things more from a musical academic background. I love hearing the different perspectives. Glad you put up the link for your Canadian idol runner up. Thanks.

Mal Beck: You've got a great mind don't you? Never would have put the two together, Russell and Presley, but you've got a valid point there. I hope you're wrong about your predictions, but I've been wrong the last couple of weeks, so no one should listen to me. I think Adam deserves to win this thing hands down. But the American public ultimately makes that decision and that's kind of the scary thing. Thanks so much for commenting. I loved the visual.

Mr. Mustard: I love that you borrowed from Randy and I'm hoping your right. Thanks for coming by.

mamoore: I hope those kids don't have cell phones and don't vote! Reason why the voting age is 18...maybe American Idol should change their rules :) Hey, you're not cheating on Adam...just being human.

Susan, here's my comment that I also put on your post:

Susan, hey we're cross commenting...very fun! I do at the heart of it think that Allison is more talented than Kris. I was having a conversation with someone who really knows music...I don't "know" music, just more like I know what I like, don't like. They were saying that Kris's range was pretty shallow (whatever that means) and that Allison had a very deep range (whatever that means). So, I think Allison should stay. I think Danny should stay. He has a great voice but really blew it with his insistence on those high notes at the end that sounded that someone was being stabbed. That Slash guy tried to warn him. He didn't listen. But just watch, after all this speculating, Adam will be voted off tonight and I will be besides myself :) Thanks for coming over to my post. Given all the real troubles of the world, it's fun to be in the light zone.
Susan this is what I love. Reading your comment from someone who knows music gives a different dimension to it. Diversions are good. A little denial is also healthy. Look for my update tonight. I'm MST, so I wait for the west coasters before I put it up. Thanks again.
I liked your post. I think Adam will be the next American Idol, and Allison should come in second. Chris should definitely go home tonight. Your comment about Slash was very funny.
As AI gets down to the real finalists it will be interesting to see who stays in the running. Let's face it......it isn't about red states/blue states it's about teeners and tweeners who become groupies from afar and are willing to spend hours texting and phoning in their votes....not that you are a groupie, Mary....you will probably only vote once or twice!! But I witnessed a family in the bar/grille area last week with two kids who spent their whole time texting in their favorite at the end of the show. Glad the parents sat over a bottle of wine, just means whomever the favorite of this group got LOTS of votes.
worldssmartestman: Huh?

Kathryn: Thank you! I'm thinking Adam will win and Danny will come in second (although this small voice is saying that he might possible go tonight, but then I think not). Geez. Thanks so much for your comment.

lorimarie: You make a great point. American Idol has an older population watching now, but there are still plenty of tweens who have the time and focus to be texting their vote over and over and over and over again. I voted twice and then I was done. Thanks for the comment.
nanananana....Arkansas Boy makes it another week! ;-D
:: doin' the happy dance::
Fab: It's not right, you know it's not. Those darn tweens in Arkansas...those parents need to know what their children are up to!
You know, it matters not if you are right or wrong, Mary!
We love reading your AI updates because they are so well writtren, so funny, sarcastic when necessary, great passion and perspective for the contestants and judges, with awesome photos...You make the aftermath of this show better and entertain us with your special brand of humor and appreciation for those who perform well and are judged appropriately.

Many here do not even watch this show but come by loyally each week to read your post and comment positively. That says something!

I missed the show tonight and am relieved I didn't see Allison voted of the island. That is depressing enough, as she had talent oozing out of her pores and deserved to stay to the bitter end.

I am left scratching my head over this. Just don't get it. Though I am also immersed in tonight's episode of Lost, which consumes me.

Looking forward to seeing next week's recap and hope it portrays all you want it to be. (Adam, Adam, Adam, Adam, Adam...!!!)
Thought Kris was gonna shit his pant right on live television. It woulda been an interesting first.

Sorry Allison is gone. I think she is one hell of a talent. But they are all gonna be gone soon...except for Adam.

I really did not like this crew at the beginning...but have grown more fond of 'em. Allison seemed to be an especially good person...and like I said, very talented.

Elimination makes the watching even more interesting.
I can't believe Allison is gone! (but surely not forgotten)Especially after Danny's screech the night before. Her farewell song was off the CHARTS! I thought it was her best performance, bar none. I suppose the pressure was off and she just let it all out.

She is a rising superstar, but I'm afraid with her gone the finale is going to be just so-so. She really added a great deal to the show. I love her.

Staying tuned 'til next week!
I missed both nights but am disappointed that Alison is gone. I wonder if the judges regret having used up their "save" earlier in the season. Alison would have been worth saving just to keep the last couple of weeks interesting. It's the Adam show from this point forward which means it's really no longer a competition at all.
Mary, Mary Mary...believe me when I say Kris's small but significant victory last night is NOT a result of Arkansas Teenie boppers....There just ain't that many of 'em (we are a small state ;-D) .....It is a result of AMERICA loving them some Kris. AMERICA still loves him!!! Watch out Adam! Emo might have gotten on AMERICA's last nerve. ;) Yep, I know the chances are pretty good that I'll eat these words....but I shall bask in the glory of the week. And enjoy every minute of it! :: morning happy dance :: (tickets go on sale this sat. for the AI tour here in Little Rock. hmmmmm? The temptation is great! )
They want a guy to win.

Now I will not watch or comment. I wanted Alison. I don't care. I am gonna pout.

Leave me alone you Adam groupies.

:::POUT::::POUT:::POUT::::
I am in no way shape or form an American Idol fan, but I've grown to like Adam's singing. However, it's his fake-assed persona that makes me want to kill; he looks like his entire attitude and wardrobe was purchased at his local Hot Topic.

Case in point: he absolutely SMOKED "Whole Lotta Love", and, believe me, that's a hard song to fake. While hearing him truly give that song the respect it's due, I thought Adam Lambert's career can go in either two directions: he can be the Rock God, like Robert Plant, and remain true to his vocal abilities, or he can betray his talent like Rod Stewart, and become a soulless, bland poser.

For his sake, I hope he chooses the former, but something tells me stronger he'll be forced to choose the latter.
First, I would like to not-so-humbly remind the readers within this particular blog that at 3:32 p.m. yesterday, I nailed the prediction of which contestant would be booted. And, I don't recall anyone else saying Alison would be a goner.

Second, as more than a few commenters have suggested, the voting is more than being about talent. Alison didn't have a shot because she is of teeny-bopper age, but enough teens and tweens who would vote for her were likely turned off by her more adult persona, as well as by the fact she doesn't look like the typical teen. She's darker, more nuanced, and bluesy. The typical teen girl (and I mean no malice toward any of them) takes one look at Alison and goes, "eww!" Given that Alison didn't look like one of the "in" crowd, their votes went toward Kris 'cause he's a bit teenish looking, toward Adam because he's an entertainer who crosses various demographics for numerous reasons, and Danny because of the widower factor (which I'm sure especially plays strongly in more conservative areas of the country). Simple math.

Third, thanks maryt for thinking I have a great brain. . .wait, you're kidding, aren't you?

Finally, Cartouche, the judges wouldn't have had a save last night as that option was good only up to the last 5 finalists if I remember correctly.
Allison? Allison was eliminated? Wow. Okey Dokey.
She's better off. Look at Chris Daughtry, and I don't think he has half her potential. Too bad she's contracted to that lame top 10 tour. She's going to have labels lining up. C'mon. A new latina-American pop star? There's so much money in that, it's going to blow Carrie Underwood's success off the face of the planet. The look on Simon's face after she belted that song out of the stadium says it all. He was PISSED that he's not going to have a stake in that. His own fault for playing his weird little psyche-out games. Kris got the anti-Simon vote.
Just Cathy: You are so wonderful and supportive. It was depressing to watch Allison get voted off and my ego took another beating. I'm no good at predicting. Thanks for hanging in there.

Frank: Kris did look shocked didn't he? Really shocked...and your comment about potential shitting in his pants was perfect given he had said he almost peed in his pants the day before. He'll be wearing Depends in no time! Allison was more talented than Danny and Kris, but it's the nature of American Idol. So glad you're a fan of the show and contributing here.

Michael: Her swan song made me cry. Unbelievably fantastic. I think she has a huge career ahead of her. The finale will not be so-so. We will make the finale fun. There's always fun to be had. No so-so here, no sirreebob.

cartouche: I used to think Adam was a shoe in. But not anymore. The American public is fickle and it's anyone's win at this point. The talent doesn't even seem to matter anymore.

Fab: You are so funny and I love your passion for Kris. Plus it makes all this more fun anyway. Hey, I like Kris...but I may have to call my recap for this coming week: 2 Men and A Baby. Yup, that's what I'm calling it...sneak preview for title...it's perfect. Cutey cutey Kris.

Now Stellaa: Let's reason our way through this. No temper tantrums. I understand why you're upset. So this is my suggestion. You don't have to watch the show of course. But you really should come and comment to keep things balanced. You can comment about how shitty AI is, sexist, racist, dumb, whatever. Your crusty comments add spice to this post. Reconsider after you're done pouting.

Gus: You are a wise man with fine taste.

Mal: You are 100% correct that you made that prediction. I think we were all thinking Danny or Kris. So, when you chime in next week, I'll look forward to hearing who you think is going to go. You're also right about the save thing. And no, I wasn't kidding about your brain, especially given another great comment.

Walter: Allison is on her way to bigger and better things. Chris Daughtery is proof of that.

Juliet: Yes, agreed. And you are so right about that look on Simon's face after Allison was absolutely spectacular with her song last night. I mean did you have chills or what? Simon just saw a lot of cash go down the drain. However, he started it...
At least Adam is in, so no truly horrific injustice was done. It's what I always say when contenstants complain they got booted too early, like five weeks before the final: If you aren't going to win, you are going to get booted sooner or later. Fourth and second are pretty much the same anyway.
neil: You're right. It's not an American tragedy that Allison got voted off. Hard to complain about when you think about it. Now, one place I haven't been proven wrong is my prediction that Adam and Danny will be in the final. I'm feeling pretty comfortable about that, especially if Adam does another Mad World kind of song and Danny sticks to what he's good at and choses a song where he's not being so risky. Next week, it's one song of their choice and one song the judges chose. It's my favorite week. Thanks for coming back!
I am not shocked that Alison got voted off, and I do believe she has the most raw talent. And she's come a long way. Have you gone and looked at her competition back in '06 I think it was? It was a Spanish language broadcast, it's on Youtube. She was so uncomfortable on the stage, and she still is, to a certain extent, but back then she was Very jerky and self-conscious.

She gets the stage persona thing down, gets some Real voice coaching, including how to protect her voice, and she'll be with us for a long, long time - way after Adam's found dead in an alley; and Danny's back teaching music to high schoolers.

I'm just sayin.

Oh, and I think Kris is adorable. He's the only one I voted for night before last - tried to vote for him (to protect him) and Adam, and only one call of many tried went through. I do think Kris is better than Danny, but that matters not.
Why, thank you, maryt. Next week is a tougher call, but like you, I've been saying a Danny/Adam finale for the past several weeks. I wasn't too sad to see Alison go, first and foremost because she didn't quite have the emotional chops to go with her voice. Her cover of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" while decent, showed that she has some maturing yet to do--certainly expected of a 17-yr old. That she has great talent is undeniable, but once again, Adam has far and away been a better all-around entertainer. His "Ring of Fire" was smart, haunting, and served notice he was the one to beat. Alison never had a moment like that, despite the many protestations such a claim will likely merit.
Yep. Missed this week, too. But I seem to be the only one. (Hey, even Jon Stewart mentioned Adam and Idol on yesterday’s show)

And two things:
1) Isn’t worldssmartestman your son?
2) Doesn’t that mean you already know he’s referring to (your buddy) Howard Stern’s show?
