"American Idol" Goes Country With A Twain Wreck or Two
Tuesday night’s “American Idol” was like a bad country song (aren’t they all?). There were the requisite ballads of cheating hearts, hard luck stories, love gone wrong and mediocre contestants.
The guest mentor was Shania Twain and the competition featured her music. According to Seacrest, Shania Twain is the “one who made country hot”. She’s the winner of 5 Grammy awards and her 1997 album “Come on Over” became the best-selling album of all time by a female musician in any genre.
The show started out with the six remaining contestants on the stage standing quietly while Ryan described each contestant in a lame attempt to create faux tension:
“A painter.
A high school student.
A glass blower.
A mother.
A father.
A construction worker.
These six lives have been changed forever, but only ONE can gain the title, 'American Idol'."
The way this season is going, perhaps Ryan’s best advice to them should have been: “Don’t give up your day job.”
Lee Dewyze: Shania encouraged Lee to start his song with just his voice and the piano. “He’s got this fantastic style and cannot be buried by his guitar.”
Lee sang “You’re Still The One” and dang it all, he didn’t listen to Twain’s advice because he started with the guitar. I loved the song and I think Lee could have brought down the house, but he had a weak start, was initially hesitant, and his chorus was slightly off key. He did eventually build into the Lee-style that so many know and love.
Randy: “Check it out. One of my favorite songs of all times, but it started out pitchy. Midway through the song, you found a way to make it your own. A pretty good job dude."
Ellen: “Better than a pretty good job. You couldn’t look cuter and I say, ‘All aboard the Shania Twain’.” That line was cornier than "Hee Haw".
Kara: “Look how far you’ve come since the beginning until now. That’s a love song and you cracked a smile a few times”. Yes, Lee did manage a smile or two, but he looked about as "happy as a tick on a fat dog".
Ryan said, “Great feedback from the judges.” No it wasn’t! Give the guy some criticism. I’ve been seeing a trend for a while now…Lee and Crystal never get criticized while other contestants like Siobhan get hog tied and roasted on a weekly basis.
Michael Lynche: Shania said, “You’re one of these guys that could sing the phone book and everyone will melt. Don’t take that for granted”. Apparently she missed the show where Big Mike was last and almost got voted off.
Sitting in the shadows on the stairs on the stage, Big Mike sang “It Only Hurts When I Breathe”.
After last week’s anemic “In the Ghetto”, Big Mike went back to good ole country basics and sang the song sweet, simple and pure. Tammy Tyree would have been proud.
Ellen: “I was a tiny bit nervous for you but it felt like Luther Vandross. I felt your emotion...it was beautiful”.
Simon: “I thought the performance was a little wet, like in a musical acting out the words”. Wet? Did Simon say, “wet”? The other judges were equally confused and demanded an explanation.
Simon said, “Yes, Wet…it was a little bit girly for you Mike.” Since when does “Wet” equate to “Girly”? Simon had a Freudian slip and either had a very dirty mind or was being a complete sexist (duh, it’s Simon).
Casey James: Shania said, “I sense that he’s missing a bit of inner confidence. Casey, bring it inside and let it come out through your voice.” Casey listened.
He sang, “Don’t” and I’m thrilled he did. The audience got to focus on his voice, which was not overshadowed by his guitar. He had the “Jesus” look going with his glowing blond hair and we all know how much country western fans love Jesus. Dang, Casey was fine like cream gravy and did country proud.
Randy: “Yo, dude, for me this was one of the best Casey James performances EVER. Nice job baby”.
Kara: “You didn’t hide, you didn’t cover it up with your guitar, and if you keep doing that, you’ll be in the front of this competition”. OK, Casey was good, but we all know Kara is biased when it comes to Casey so her opinion doesn’t count.
Next up was Crystal Bowersox. Ryan was talking to Crystal about her time with Shania and cruelly and sadistically rubbed in Crystal’s face the fact that Shania has such GLOWING WHITE TEETH. I think Ryan can be quite “Wet” himself.
“Sound more happy”, Shania told Crystal, the clear front-runner, after she listened to Crystal’s song. Crystal, not one to be told what to do about anything, responded that the song she chose was a clear message to her boyfriend who needed to “man up one of these days.”
Crystal’s unabashed boyfriend was in the audience wearing a T-shirt in support of his girlfriend. And no, he is not the father of Crystal’s baby even though his name is Tony and Tony is the name of her baby’s father but that Tony is back in Bosnia to be with another woman he had a baby with. Sounds like a good country song in the making to me!
Crystal sang “No One Needs to Know.” I’m a huge fan of Crystal’s and no offense to Shania, but this was the kind of country music song that gives country music a bad name. I had a sudden urge to do-se-do and dip some chew in my mouth. How do country western folks say, ‘’CRYSTAL SUCKED BIG TIME!” The song was choppy, disjointed and Crystal seemed distracted.
Randy: “Yo yo. It wasn’t my favorite performance but I love you and like seeing you try different things.”
Ellen: “I, uh, uh, there’s nothing you can’t do, uh, uh, not my favorite personal, you’re brilliant but it wasn’t my, uh, favorite.” Ellen, uh, needs, to, uh, stop with the, uh, uh’s.
Simon: “ Oh I could be in so much trouble. We don’t like Crystal this week. It was limp. It was something you would expect in a coffee shop. I didn’t feel any conviction from you.”
Aaron Kelly: Aaron sang, “You’ve Got A Way”. Aaron, who suddenly looked like Gomer Pyle, knew how to sing country! I thought it was his best performance by far and he made me forget he was the tender age of 17. Shania looked like a proud mother.
Kara: “It was like you really felt those words.” Aaron said he sang his song for his mother. A collective “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh” was heard throughout Nashville and L.A. Any good country crowd loves a mama’s boy (just don’t marry one!).
Simon: “Tonight, you were like a different artist. This is the kind of record you should make. For the first time in weeks, it felt sincere and believable. I think you did really well tonight. Well done.” Hey, Simon liked Gomer!
Siobhan Magnus: Siobhan sang “Any Man of Mine”. She was all gussied up with her cowgirl boots on and looking "prettier than a glob of butter melting on a stack of pancakes". Siobhan got down into the audience and sang her heart out, belting out those high notes at the end. I thought she was sensational.
Randy: “I loved it, I loved the whole punk country look, the big notes. I loved it, I loved it.” Randy loved it.
Ellen: “Way to pull the Shania Twain into the station! Fantastic.” Ellen was as funny as Minnie Pearl.
Simon: “I really liked that song and the song choice was perfect. The screaming at the end may have gone on a little bit. It’s almost like you were giving birth at the end. If you heard that note in isolation, you might have thought something bad had happened.”
Well, tie me to a pig and roll me in the mud…what a surprise, Siobhan got criticized.
My Top 3—Just for Tonight: Siobhan, Aaron and Casey. I’m fairly certain that Crystal just had an off night, but there’s a part of me that wonders how seriously she takes this whole American Idol thing. I get the sense that she thinks it’s a joke, and really who could blame her?
Who will be voted out on Wednesday night’s show? Honestly, after Tuesday night, it's hard to say. I suspect that it may have been too little, too late for young Aaron and he'll be singing, "Country Roads, Take Me Home..." I’ll be back next week for another riveting “American Idol” recap.
Y’all come back now, ya hear?
UPDATE:
Nor surprising but another shocker from the voters:
Bottom 3: Big Mike, Casey and Siobhan
Wow...Casey had a fantastic performance, but I thought Siobhan was outstanding. Big Mike has a big voice...and Siobhan was sent home.
There were many Siobhan fans (none of them were the judges) and rather than the show in its last 5 weeks reaching some kind of crescendo, it just took another huge fall on the face.
And Aaron is still there? This is where I have to knock myself on the side of the head and say, "Oh yeah, it's being left to the average American voter." Disaster.

I honestly think the judges have an agenda. I've been noticing it for weeks now. No matter what Lee doles out, they think he's the greatest thing since sliced bread, in this case, southern grits. Ugh. He was so awful last night, I was literally cringing. He can not sing on-key unless he is yelling the song. His quiet notes were SO off the musical chart that I closed my eyes and just shook my head in a fashion as to say 'what the hell?' After the judges all overly-praised his performance, I literally said, 'that's it...they have some kind of agenda and they are really pushing this guy who has the pipes of a rusty bathtub.' He really was hideous. His "performance" was by far the worst of the evening. But will he go home? NOOOOOO (in Steve Martin fashion). He'll continue on his merry way to the end going up against Crystal, or at least that's what I think the judges are hoping for.
My guess is that Lee is generating a lot of downloads on iTunes. Last year, after it was revealed that Adam Lambert was getting the most download action, CNN reported "that's when the judges really started getting behind him." I'm not surprised. It's a business and it's all about the $$$$. But this honestly reeks and I know I'm not the only one that's noticing it.
As for the others, I agree, it was Crystal's weakest performance to date, but she was STILL consistent, on-key and showed the confidence that's never been apparent from any other contestant in the show's nine-year-season-run.
As for Siobhan, I thought she was slightly wobbly towards the middle of the song, but she pulled it together fast and ended on a high (and very powerful) note. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this girl can SING! She just needs the fine-tuning to make herself consistent throughout an entire performance (which she's done already) and she's on her way.
I always considered Casey and Lee to be pretty much similar in vocal quality, but this was the second time Casey blew Lee off the stage and came out sounding and looking like a pro. His first time was with his sensitive version of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy." This guy has the "it-factor" and will be a successful musician. No matter where he ends up on this show, he will continue with a career in the industry, and in front of the camera. Not behind the scenes.
All 'n all, I have NO idea how the voting will go this week, but if I HAD to bet on the tween voters of America (mostly southern tweens), I would say that the bottom three could consist of Aaron (who did a good job, not great), Big Mike (who really deserves better) and, dare I say it...Crystal. I know that my prediction of the bottom is probably totally off, but I just can't seem to get into the mind of a southern tween (thank goodness!).
If were up to me, and, of course, it's not, I'd be saying bye-bye to Lee. His blandness has worn me out, and as they said "Mike could sing the phone book," I'd rather be reading the phone book than listen to Lee one more week. He can't carry a quiet note if his life depended on it, and truthfully, isn't this contest about vocal ability? At least it used to be.
"American Idol" has become the show people love to hate. Just look at VFTW.com (which stands for Vote For The Worst), I believe Siobhan has now taken Tim's place on that site. It's too bad, they're confusing Siobhan's quirkiness and great vocal ability to a guy who will be referred to as "Tim who?" in a couple of years. Maybe, and it's a BIG maybe, if they put extensions on his pointed eye-teeth, he could get a job as an extra on "True Blood," but I think that's even pushing his abilities too far.
Hopefully VFTW.com won't be successful this time and the pessimists who strive to make other people's lives as miserable as theirs, Siobhan might actually stand a chance next to Crystal, Aaron, Casey and Mike. Ya know...people that can actually SING!
Sorry, Lee. I'm sure your a nice guy, but even if you manage to eek out a high position, even win (gasp!), your career will be about as long as Justin Guarini's. I'm laughing, because I know half the people reading this are saying "Justin who?"
As for my last paragraph, the spelling should have been checked as many times as it posted. It should have read:
Sorry, Lee. I'm sure YOU'RE a nice guy, not "your." Ugh. I despise when I make mistakes and they're published before I can correct the errors. Oh well. I'm sure you all get the gist of my opinion.
As far as I'm concerned it's the Lee and Chrystal show. We'll see.
And congrats on your wonderful Salon placement!
Doesn't sound like I missed much. I am a fan of the chubby, bohemian, tattooed, dreadlocked, single mom for some inexplicable reason. She belongs outside a bistro in Haite Ashbury with a cowboy hat on the sidewalk peddling for change strumming incoherently as the Peyote kicks in, but I still love her.
Her very first performance wasn't that great. She got better the next week. She took their advice and changed up, got rid of the guitar, etc.
People are saying "too bad for Crystal", but she was still really, really good. She just didn't do her gospel, big voice thing. It certainly wasn't her best, but as the judges said, her "not best" is still better than most of the other contestants' best.
I think she takes this seriously. She also knows that she's got a contract and will have an album out either way.
But she didn't "fail" last night. I thought she was pretty damn good.
I thought Lee was all over the place at the beginning, and I think the judges think they have another David Cook on their hands but Lee knows nothing about arrangement. I really like his voice, though.
Casey was really good. And some blog called it about blasphemy to mention Bob Seger - well dude sounds like Bob Seger. And Seger can go big or small too. Yeah, Casey's gorgeous but he's pretty unassuming and he actually sounds fantastic.
I walked out of the room during Aaron's performance so I missed it. I thought he did a good job last week but he does seem to be preoccupied with hitting the notes. Can't judge this week because I missed it.
What's interesting is that Siobhan is only 19!! People forget that. How many people just out of high school "know what kind of performer" they are? She's got the voice, just needs the direction.
I looked again at "Living for the City" - she should sing that again on the show if she gets a chance. She killed it.
Mary - where do you come up with these lines? Needless to say, your wrap ups are SO much better than the show. I can see why Crystal is not taking it seriously. Why would you want to be the winner on the WORST every season?
Amen! Say on, brother! Preach it!
I have the exact same reaction to Lee. I also would suspect a conspiracy among the Idol judges to promote him -- but my wife likes Lee too. Last night we both sat on the same couch, listening to the same performance. She thought it was great, but it made my skin crawl.
Steven: "As for the others, I agree, it was Crystal's weakest performance to date, but she was STILL consistent, on-key and showed the confidence that's never been apparent from any other contestant in the show's nine-year-season-run."
Amen again. What I heard was Crystal singing a country song as if it were a country song. Imagine that.
Steven: "As for Siobhan, I thought she was slightly wobbly towards the middle of the song, but she pulled it together fast and ended on a high (and very powerful) note. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this girl can SING! She just needs the fine-tuning to make herself consistent throughout an entire performance (which she's done already) and she's on her way."
In my view, she has a great voice but doesn't know how to use it. Her performances have been all over the place. It's like someone who owns an elephant gun but can't hit the target. Her "big notes" at the end sound too much like screeches for my taste. I'd like to see her go to college and get a music degree, and come back in four years.
BTW (and I should read the other comments before I leap in), "wet" in England means limp and emotional and - oh, sort of lib-lab and bleeding-hearty, etc. I believe it was a favorite epithet of Margaret Thatcher thrashing the opposition.
Steven: Thanks again for a great recap yourself! I think you're right about the judge's agenda regarding Lee...it's the only explanation. I was reading on some site last night about stats of hits on each contestants sites and Lee is second highest, as opposed to Aaron who is at the bottom. It's entertainment and entertainment translates to dollar signs. It's the American way. Anyway, enjoyed your comments and appreciate the additional recaps...
ocularnervosa: I appreciate the rating!
atwoodbriania: Thanks for reading!
aim: Thanks aim...actually Salon has been running my weekly recaps for weeks now...it gets on the cover in the morning and then it stays on the TV section for the week. I actually had a really nice comment this morning! But yes, many of those Salon commenters can not be very gracious with their comments (to say the least).
Luluand: Again, something got lost in the translation. I'm no fan of country music and was maybe trying to not let my bias interfere with the reviews. Honestly, I didn't think anyone was that great, even the good ones. Thanks!
Roger: Is it selective memory? If so, brilliant! I wouldn't count Casey out...and thanks for the Salon compliment...it does run there every week...
Witness: I agree she hasn't really figured out how to use it, but there seems to be an essence of an amazing voice there and I've lowered my standards at this point in the season. I enjoyed her song last night and that's usually not the case. I really thought Crystal wasn't into it, but others have disagreed. What do I know anyway? I'm no music critique that's for sure! Thanks so much for enjoying my recaps...I really do appreciate that.
Gwool: Hey, Crystal is completely talented and technically should win this thing. And don't you think she deserves a little more than singing outside a bistro in Haight Ashbury? Although I love the way you wrote that.
Lea: I liked Big Mike too, but he just didn't wow me. Thanks for reading!
anybodhi: The reason I thought she might not be taking this seriously was due to reports I had read in the last few weeks that she was considering leaving the competition. She's never made any bones about the fact that she's there simply to try to meet the financial needs of her son. And remember, this was just a recap for last night...not a general observation. Crystal will be back better than ever next week, unless she truly is determined to self-sabotage, but this is just my opinion and I hope I'm wrong. I loved hearing your recap...it always helps to hear what others thought about each contestant. I've heard Casey being referred to a Bob Seger sound-alike so whoever said that on whatever blog that was is being a snob.
Thanks so much for making this post a lot more interesting with your recaps.
Silkstone: Well you and I are on the same page. I thought she sucked last night.
Juliet: Well, in Shania's defense, she wrote the song as a happy song and Crystal seems to have a hard time doing happy. Your quote and "wet" comment made me laugh out loud. But honestly, she seems like a beautiful person and is an amazing singer. You should be proud!
worldsmartestman: Thank you! Great compliment coming from someone as smart as you.
trilogy: To be honest, and I'm changing that line to put quotes around it, I found a couple of those expressions on the internet under "country slang expressions"...and point well taken, this is the worst season ever...
mishima666: Good to see you back here again...I missed your recap from last week. I didn't think Lee was awful at all, like you and Steven did, but I didn't think he was good and I think the judges pamper him and coddle him and won't ever give him some constructive criticisms for the reasons Steven listed. It's one big set up. Again, we disagree on Crystal's performance...I didn't find one consistent thing about her performance...it felt lazy and non-commital. And I think we can all agree that Siobhan has a great voice who hasn't been trained enough...as anybodhi said, she is only 19. The college degree in music isn't a bad thing. Really loved your recap and take on things! Thank you.
Myriad: Good to see you back again this week...I missed your recap as well last week. Glad you were more productive than I was during the show and thanks for the info about what "wet" means in England...where Simon was. It would have helped if he had explained what it really meant instead of saying "girly".
lorimarie: Yeah clean rugs and no need to take Pepto Bismol!
Susanne: I felt the exact same way! Although I do prefer Casey, Lee or Crystal with my top 2 being Casey (if he stays consistent) or Crystal with my top being Crystal.
Hating that spam.
But hoping Crystal is still in there. Remember Tamyra Gray? She sang the hell out of "A House is Not a Home" (love me my Burt Bachrach) and was voted off.
DialIdol showed her up there, though, so she's probably okay . . . ?
Fingers crossed.
And while Crystal is being slammed for not blowing the sound man out of his headphones, she did the only truly interesting vocals of the night with the particular harmonies that she sang with the backup singer. That was really the only that stood out all night to my listening.
So there. Rock on, Crystal!
PS I noticed the "white teeth" comment, too, and I cringed. Eek.
PPS Does anybody else notice that Crystal sasses back to every criticism she gets? I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but I do notice that she stands up and defends her every move. Is she fiercely unafraid or is she thin-skinned?
Just a few quick thoughts:
HA! Ellen also hears Bob Seger in Casey (just remember that my sister and I figured it out first!)
I think Crystal has decided to start throwing the competition. She'll already be on the tour and it will take a couple of weeks of being bad in order for people to stop voting for her. Good for her. From everything I've read, the winner's contract is a career killer.
Siobhan was way too timid with that song when she needed to be sassy... and when she finally got a little attitude, she just had to scream.
Anyway, not sad at all to see her go. (and more points for me on my fantasy idol game!)
That's it, folks. You wanted Siobhan off, you got it. If you thought the show was boring already, you ain't seen what boring is yet. Ugh.
I am so disgusted at the way the judges snickered at everything Siobhan did and I really feel that they're partly responsible for her getting voted off...and Casey & Mike in the bottom three with her? What's that about? The bottom should have been Lee, Aaron and probably Siobhan, with Lee sent packing.
I honestly feel Siobhan would have really shined on "Sinatra Night" next week.
I can already imagine the song list:
Lee: "I've Got ME Under Your Skin" or "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me"
Aaron: "High Hopes" or "Goodbye"
Crystal: "I've Got The World On A String"
Mike: "The Best Is Yet To Come"
Casey: "You Make Me Feel So Young"
See y'all next week. I should get a lot of rest. I have a feeling the remaining month will be a snooze-fest and I wouldn't want to fall asleep. Then again...
And, is it just me, or does anyone else think Shioban sounds a little like Aaron Neville when she's in her lower register?
I like Lainey's idea that Crystal might be going to throw the competition. She's too good for the competition, but anybody else who's been remotely good is Gone!
It's just particularly sucky this year, yanno? {sigh} And I had such Hopes!
Siobhan has definitely been slipping the last few weeks. I remember several weeks ago thinking she was awesome, but haven't felt the same in a while. I think she oversang Shania's song - hard to describe in words, but her vocals were too "lilted: and "flowery" and she had to kinda rush to fit all the words in... I think she went too soon, but shouldn't have won anyway...
Casey was flat out awesome. I think the judges don't like that he doesn't kiss their rears. Shania's "no confidence" comment seemed off base, as I think he is pretty confident, bordering on cocky, and that's why they don't like him (remember Daughtry, who didn't really NEED Idol - he was going to make it anyway!) When Simon said to Kara several weeks ago "What's the matter, love? Didn't he return your calls?" (paraphrased), I think he was spot on! She was bummed Casey wasn't more obsequious. Flat out talented, though.
Aaron is very talented, but alas, not Idol material. Doesn't have "it".
Mike - not my thing. Looks like a cartoon character - perhaps Bluto.
Crystal - definitely good, but overrated, in my book. Other contestants get blasted for sounding the same every week, but not her...
We need to go back to 3, but simply not replacing Simon next year is NOT the answer...
Randy - a good guy, with a good ear, I think. I guess he can stay.
Ellen - I like her and definitely think people are too hard on her, but I could take her or leave her.
Kara - really needs to go. She tries to be "relevant" (to borrow their overused terminology) and constructive, but just comes across like a bee-atch. And she doesn't have Simon's easy charm to help her pull-off the tough-guy schtick. The couple times we've heard her sing, she actually has an AMAZING voice. Wonder why she didn't achieve more popularity as a performer?...
