We're having an OS brunch together tomorrow. Now, what tasty dishes will we sample from ethnically diverse Andersonville area?
A Taste of Heaven
One of the brunchiest places to go; lunch and egg dishes; great coffee, incredible pastries.
Kopi Travelers Cafe

For the world traveler in us all, Kopi Travelers Cafe has the front reserved for Persian sitting--on the floor with cushions! Tables to the side and back make for Western dining. Menu is on the earthy-crunchy side, with fresh made juices, tea blends, vegie burgers, and bold soups. Back of the cafe has a store crammed with clothing of India cottons, jewelry, and fragrant oils, candles, and soaps. Plenty of books on travel and languages.
Svea Restaurant

I tend to prefer Svea Restaurant to Ann Sather across the street. There's something about the smaller, more quaint atmosphere and the service is always pragmatically smooth and friendly. I'm a sucker for the Viking breakfast: eggs your way, Swedish limpa toast, potatoes, potato sausage and Swedish pancakes. But the omelets are always flavorful.

Mmmmm . . . Swedish pancakes! I'd say the only drawback is the coffee, which is on the weak side for a Swedish place.
Andies Restaurant

I remember when Andies was a little hole-in-the-wall Middle Eastern place on Clark St. Truly mom and pop, with the open kitchen up at the front by the door. That was the 80s--all the lesbian and bi women looking for a cheap delicious meal would go there for the falafel plate. It's much ritzier now, ladies. White tablecloths, outdoor seating, wine--but the Lebanese influenced Middle Eastern food is still rich and delish! They may have a buffet for brunch--not sure.
Reza's Restaurant

Now a hugely successful Persian restaurant, Reza's is pure shish kabob heaven. Chicken shish kabob, filet mignon shish kabob, and the lamb!--if you are ready to devour lamb, this is the place to go to. The most succulent lamb kabobs or lamb chops. Or try the lamb shank with pomegranate glaze. Reza's also has quintessentially traditional Persian dishes like gormeh zabzi. A feast for a king.
These are some of my favorites from way back in Andersonville. South of Foster on Clark St. is Tokyo Marina for sushi and T's for American bar and grill. Further north up the street are the chain Hamburger Mary's and Frida's, a slightly posh Mexican place. A few other restaurants off side streets that I haven't really tried.
Women and Children First Bookstore

A bookstore that is a must-see while you're in Chicago, Robin. A great space to stop off and connect with the women's community. Still independent after all these years.
Now, where shall we go and what shall we do, Robin, Jill, and Jules? Wheee! The OS wimmin take Andersonville!

@rita--thanks for playing, girl.
@Jill--we will miss you.
can't find my camera, just no fricking clue where that puppy went. I'm in the middle of finals and my work space is reflecting my inner chaos.
See you all soon!
Robin and jules had got there before me and wisely chose a posh table up front, ala Persian dining on cushions around this fabu low table.
Robin had coffee and the black bean burger. Jules had coffee and the breakfast burrito. I had white tea, fresh carrot juice, and the eggs and lox plate.
It was an incredible brunch--great food, great topics of conversation with smart, creative women. One of the best I've had in years. Thanks Robin and jules for making it happen. Wish I had a camera and could put our pics on the blog. Next time.
