Bio
"Her beauty served a mob of terror whose one mission is to destroy." Yeah, that's me alright. I am a writer, actor, activist. That means I've worked in the hospitality and retail industries. Before you ask for fries with that, prepare yourself for political, economic, social, and sexual liberation. Not a total commie. I just marvel at the inflammatory red-baiting language--so much like queer-baiting, it's scaaary. I will be your downfall yet, America. Until then, I go for universal healthcare and making friends with anarchists, hippies, fellow-travelers, philosophers, actors, and other troublemakers. And, of course, da queers. So I'm pinko. Does that make me more Canadian than anything else? How queer are they in Canukistan? And can they put me up for the night--you know, just in case? In other words, just your typical OS blogger.

Brunch with Robin, Jill, and jules in Andersonville!

Rate: 3 Flag

We're having an OS brunch together tomorrow.  Now, what tasty dishes will we sample from ethnically diverse Andersonville area?

A Taste of Heaven

taste of heaven

One of the brunchiest places to go; lunch and egg dishes; great coffee, incredible pastries.

Kopi Travelers Cafe

kopi cafe

For the world traveler in us all, Kopi Travelers Cafe has the front reserved for Persian sitting--on the floor with cushions!  Tables to the side and back make for Western dining.  Menu is on the earthy-crunchy  side, with fresh made juices, tea blends, vegie burgers, and bold soups.  Back of the cafe has a store crammed with clothing of India cottons, jewelry, and fragrant oils, candles, and soaps.  Plenty of books on travel and languages.

Svea Restaurant

svea restaurant

I tend to prefer Svea Restaurant to Ann Sather across the street.  There's something about the smaller, more quaint atmosphere and the service is always pragmatically smooth and friendly.  I'm a sucker for the Viking breakfast:  eggs your way, Swedish limpa toast, potatoes, potato sausage and Swedish pancakes.  But the omelets are always flavorful.

swedish pancakes

Mmmmm . . . Swedish pancakes!  I'd say the only drawback is the coffee, which is on the weak side for a Swedish place.

Andies Restaurant

andies restaurant

I remember when Andies was a little hole-in-the-wall Middle Eastern place on Clark St.  Truly mom and pop, with the open kitchen up at the front by the door.  That was the 80s--all the lesbian and bi women looking for a cheap delicious meal would go there for the falafel plate.  It's much ritzier now, ladies.  White tablecloths, outdoor seating, wine--but the Lebanese influenced Middle Eastern food is still rich and delish!  They may have a buffet for brunch--not sure.

Reza's Restaurant

reza's

Now a hugely successful Persian restaurant, Reza's is pure shish kabob heaven.  Chicken shish kabob, filet mignon shish kabob, and the lamb!--if you are ready to devour lamb, this is the place to go to.  The most succulent lamb kabobs or lamb chops.  Or try the lamb shank with pomegranate glaze.  Reza's also has quintessentially traditional Persian dishes like gormeh zabzi.  A feast for a king.

These are some of my favorites from way back in Andersonville.  South of Foster on Clark St. is Tokyo Marina for sushi and T's for American bar and grill.  Further north up the street are the chain Hamburger Mary's and Frida's, a slightly posh Mexican place.  A few other restaurants off side streets that I haven't really tried.

Women and Children First Bookstore

women and children first

A bookstore that is a must-see while you're in Chicago, Robin.  A great space to stop off and connect with the women's community.  Still independent after all these years.

Now, where shall we go and what shall we do, Robin, Jill, and Jules?  Wheee!  The OS wimmin take Andersonville!

Wooohooooo! I can't wait!!! xoxoxox
after seeing the inside of Kopi's I'm debating my first choice... someone else just needs to choose, or we won't get reservations
and I'm always up for Middle Eastern *waffle, waffle, waffle*
You choose! I have never been to any of these places! xox
@jules--okay. It's up to you and me now, jules. Robin is willing to be our Andersonville virgin. Kopi's is fun for the atmosphere and I think you would like the earthy-crunchy nature of the food. Andies Restaurant has plenty of vegetarian entrees or entrees that could be adjusted to vegetarian status and it has better outdoor seating than Kopi.
Ok, Kopi's it is. Nice to see your face btw :)
Kopi it is! at 11:30 tomorrow! Yeyyy! The street address for Kopi Travelers Cafe is 5317 N. Clark St., about 3 blocks north of Foster.
I'm calling to make reservations now.

Si, mi foto es muy bonita y suave, no?
Hey, this was not announced to the general people here in the OS blogosphere, I am only two hours from Chi town, maybe I wanted to go or is this a cool girls only Brunch? Perhaps a flame war against this unwarranted gathering of OS cool people should ensue? Everyone is just aching for one..
@rita--I'm totally unfamiliar with your work. Robin, jules, and I have been OS buddies for over a year now and this is our first time meeting in person. We just sort of threw this thing together today. I've got no problem with other OS joiners, but would a two hour commute both ways be worth a two hour brunch with us? It's your call.
Rita!! I do know Rita very well!!! I did not know you were so close!!! I'll PM. xox
iusted es hermoso!

Join us Rita!!
Rita was just flaming us. She is two hours away by plane! Bad girl! xox
@rita--just checked out your poetry. Cool! do you think you can make it? Would it be worth your while?
Hot pic, Max! Okay, now how to I get to Kopi's? xox
@Robin--you can do this two ways:

1) Walk one block north from your house to Granville; turn left and walk west to the Red Line stop at Granville. Take the Red Line southbound to Berwyn. Get off at Berwyn and take the #92 Foster bus; the bus will circle around on Sheridan Road and then head west on Foster. Get off at Clark St. and walk 3 blocks north on Clark to Kopi Travelers Cafe.

2) Walk north from your house to Granville. Turn right and walk to the corner of Granville and Sheridan Road. Take either the 151 bus or the 147 bus south to Berwyn. Get off and wait for the 92 Foster bus to turn the corner and pick you up at that stop. Take the 92 Foster west till you get to Clark St. Get off and walk 3 blocks north to Kopi Travelers Cafe, 5317 N. Clark St.
Sorry I was getting silly tonight with this whole feed thing, I wish I could just hop a plane that easy, I wouldn't ever be serious about flaming my favorite OS people. Have fun. (sorry Robin you know you can't take me anywhere...)
You're too funny, Max...how long do you think the trip will take? xox
Ritaaaa! You are a very naughty girl! Which is why I like you so much! xox
@Robin--don't want you getting lost. What fun would that be? lol. It probably won't take more than 30 minutes.

@rita--thanks for playing, girl.

@Jill--we will miss you.
@jane--yes, please, and someone please bring a camera to take our pics in all our brunching glory!
ok, on the way now- says 20 min on the directions (hahaha- do they shoot darts for these numbers?)
can't find my camera, just no fricking clue where that puppy went. I'm in the middle of finals and my work space is reflecting my inner chaos.
See you all soon!
Jules, Max, and Robin are in the house right now!!!! xox
((Robin & Max)) good to meet you both :)
Sadly, Jill couldn't be with us. So it was just me, Robin, and jules.

Robin and jules had got there before me and wisely chose a posh table up front, ala Persian dining on cushions around this fabu low table.

Robin had coffee and the black bean burger. Jules had coffee and the breakfast burrito. I had white tea, fresh carrot juice, and the eggs and lox plate.

It was an incredible brunch--great food, great topics of conversation with smart, creative women. One of the best I've had in years. Thanks Robin and jules for making it happen. Wish I had a camera and could put our pics on the blog. Next time.
Hey Jules and Max! It was so wonderful! We were legendary! If there had been photo ops...the glamour would have been too much. So, maybe next time when everyone is used to how fabu we are! xoxoxox
