A Connecticut Yankee's Pride

The 4th of July holiday evokes many emotions. I’ll laugh and banter with family and friends as we eat barbeque—perhaps indulge in a few beers. The Red Sox will play ball just for us on a TV set up at poolside. My brother-in-law will challenge all with his butt-bounce off the diving board, but I’ll refrain because I enjoy freedom of choice. Wow, now that does invoke this Connecticut Yankee’s pride in these United States of America. So many countries don’t enjoy the basic tenets of freedom— We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. And as evening brings with it a growing darkness, sparklers will be lit; fire works will enthrall my family. We will celebrate these truths.

IMG_2257I realize my country has its imperfections, but on July 4th, I become a patriot, not a cynic. My mind will travel 10 miles east to the Hale Homestead in Coventry, Connecticut, carrying with it my silent thanks to one of many who sacrificed for my—your [?] freedom.

Widely considered America's first spy, he volunteered for an intelligence-gathering mission, but was captured by the British. He is best remembered for his speech before being hanged following the Battle of Long Island, in which he said, "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country."  My writer’s mind couldn’t conceive such patriotic poetry.

Connecticut is also the home to David Bushnell. His biography would be an interesting read. Happy 4th Chuck.
I just learned that in 1985 Hale was officially designated the state hero of Connecticut. Great post -- and happy 4th!
Enjoy the beer and BBQ. And since your a Red Sox fan, I'm sure you won't forget to wish George Steinbrenner a happy birthday!

I had admittedly forgotten to whom this quote belonged, although I have always loved it. In fact, well, I have more to say, but I'll leave it there...with gratitude.

Thanks for the reminder. It's too often that we take for granted what this great country affords us. Despite the current state, remember charity and foster community, not only within our boundaries, but where others don't have these gifts as well.

Sitting here listening to the fireworks stilling going over the lake...too tired to write much coherent, but thank you for such a heartfelt post. As you said, sometimes it is important to push the negative thoughts aside and celebrate what is good.

I'm sorry I'm getting to this late. I was in the Black Hills of SD enjoying their fireworks. I envy you somewhat, Mr. Mustard. I never do feel those pangs of patriotism on this day. Maybe it's because I spend so much time on the cynical side the rest of the year. I have forced myself to find the whole story to so many American events so that I can teach the whole "truth" to my students. In doing so, it loses much of its magic...like if one were to jump off one of the Disney rides only to find out that behind the fantasy were just hydraulics and machine.

However, I will agree that the ideals are something to be celebrated. I think I can get myself to be loyal to those, even if not to a country or flag. Hopefully, that's some common ground.
