Change We Can Believe In:Kuwait Elects 4 Women to Parliament
The U.S. isn't the only nation that is experiencing change this year. In Kuwait, where women only received the right to vote and run for office in 2005, a popular election has for the first time put not one, but four women in the Kuwaiti Parliament.
The election comes amid instability in the government, the third parliamentary election called within the past four years, and dissatisfaction with conservative and Islamist parliament members.
I was surprised in coverage from neighboring UAE stations (an English translation is carried on Mosaic www.linktv.org/mosaic/) to see how many men expressed hope that electing women would add stability to the government.
Like Barack Obama, Kuwaiti women candidates ran under the slogan of change. It will be interesting to watch how that change plays out.
