When I say “I’ll keep you in my thoughts…”
I mean that when I'm driving alone in the car
And a song comes on that makes me pause
That says the things that I could not
I will replay the words over and over in my mind
And wonder if they could possibly bring you any comfort.
When I say “I’ll keep you in my thoughts…”
I mean that when I am raking away the winter leaves
That spent months frozen to the ground
And I discover a small green shoot that miraculously survived
I will gently pat its roots more firmly into the soil
And know that beating the odds is real.
When I say “I’ll keep you in my thoughts…”
I mean that when I sit down with my family
And they challenge all my strengths
Or I endure another round of the same old battles
With the one I trust to keep my world safe
I will be a different kind of grateful for my day.
When I say “I’ll keep you in my thoughts…”
I mean that as I take my first trip of the spring
To see how the dunes have changed with the winter winds
I begin to understand that life shifts no matter how many fences we build
And the best we can do is stand strong together
Hold hands and face the wind.
When I say “I’ll keep you in my thoughts…”
I mean that when it is dark and silent
And everyone else is finally asleep
I am once again left alone to wonder what I believe in
And realize that in the end it doesn’t really matter what
It just matters that I believe.

My favorite section, I must admit.
And yes, you're absolutely right - it just matters that we believe.
Rated. :-D
how I love this line. What a wonderful poem.
Owl- So good to hear your voice, I've been busy working and haven't had much time to be here or anywhere else.
Fishing Fool - Thanks.
Eva- I appreciate your confidence in me! I wrote this because I often feel at a loss for words in the face of someone's struggle but their stories always hang with me.
Chuck - Sounds like you are a different kind of grateful these days, too!
Mary- Thanks.
Joan - And thanks to you, too!
Ann - Aw. Sweet. Even though you dissed mayo this morning, I still love you! It's funny how I don't ever start out thinking I'll write a poem but every once in awhile that's just what seems to make sense.
Rita - I'm thrilled that you liked it enough to read again!
What lovely and sincere poetry. Thank you for posting it.

This is beautifully and powerfully written. It is so emotive and yet with such an economy of words. It reflects things mediated upon long and lovingly.
This is one for my desktop: "I will gently pat its roots more firmly into the soil. And know that beating the odds is real."
Such writing makes us all long to hold hands and face the wind. Thank you for this piece—very much.
Rated and appreciated.
anna1liese- It amazing how the sand moves with the wind and even though the fences slow its flow they never really hold it back.
blue- thanks. that beach is great for swimsuits in the summer!
psyche - I'm glad you liked it. I think of your writing often.
mary- It's when I am at a loss for words that all I can do is think about what I wish I could say! Glad to count you as a friend, too.
fireyes - I appreciate that, thanks a lot.
dianaani- It helped me to write them out, it's comforting to know that other people understood what I was trying to say.
Ann - I have struggle for so long trying to figure out the "what" -like I was missing out on something if I couldn't clarify my belief. It is so much easier just to have faith in the idea of belief, if that makes sense.
Sparking - When I read so many of your posts, "I'll keep you in my thoughts" is the most profound thing I can think of to say.
lemonpulp- If you needed them, I'm happy you found them!
V- well thank you, my pleasure.
Lezlie- beautiful works for me. thanks.
Kate- I appreciate that!
Natalie- thank you, too.
Karin - That water is most certainly chilling right now - my husband actually went swimming in it last weekend. (though I know that wasn't the kind of chilling you meant)
Lea- I am sure you've probably felt that phrase many times in your life. When I think of you, I also like to think of that little green shoot!
Grif- That makes me smile!
Harriet - I keep the image of that little green shoot close to my heart.
mLee- thank you.
Dennis- Add that little green shoot to your stash of birthday gifts, from me to you with lots of love and hope.
jane- It's amazing how much these people stay in our thoughts, isn't it.
femme - I have lived on the dunes of Lake Michigan for 5 years now and the sand has definitely crept into my blood stream!
I have been feeling this way too but would never have put the words together so beautifully.
Well done.
