A new home for Max!! UPDATED with a picture of Ruby.

Rate: 20 Flag

Max the pit bull, aka Canis Maximus, aka the long-term guest dog at Che' Mer, has found his forever home!

Max running loops in the snow Dec '08

(Max running loops in the snow, 12/21/08).

We went to dinner with our friend Benjamin and his wife Kim last Friday, and mentioned Max's ongoing quest for a permanent home. Benjamin perked up and said, "Did you say a pit bull?" Yep. "My sister's been looking for a pit bull for a year."

 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently, this sister has an elderly black lab, and a young "pocket pit" female (apparently a pit-corgi mix, very short, with very large ears, and utterly adorable), and she's been wanting another pit to keep the younger dog busy.

They came out Sunday to meet Max, loved him, and took him with them for a trial run.

The family has two little boys, ages 7 & 9; they adore Max, and he adores them, and follows them everywhere. They are home-schooled, so mom and the kids are home all day, every day, and he's in heaven. Mom reports of his first full day:

The boys wake up before I do, so by the time I got downstairs this morning, they and Max were all sacked out on the couch watching Kung Fu Panda.  Evan, my oldest, said, "Yeah, we weren't sure if Max knew how to get on the couch, so we taught him how to get up here."  Nice one, boys.

From his second full day, we got this report:

He's been on 2 walks now with us, and fits right in with our pack of ill-behaved-animals-and-children-with-leashes.  We're like a moving mass of tails and arms all going in separate directions, but still managing to make progress toward a common goal (the cul-de-sac at the top of the hill).  We seriously have to walk before people come home from work because I don't want them to think we're all hopeless.

And we got 10 of Max's nails trimmed, 10 more to go.  You were right when you said he didn't really care for the procedure.  It was sort of like clipping the nails of a jack rabbit on crack.  He'd let me do about two, then pop up and run like a crazed banshee somewhere else in the room.

He and Ruby are still playing lots, which is awesome.  And Max can leap!  He soared off of a retaining wall in our backyard today, hit the ground once and then shot into the living room.  The boys think he needs a cape :)

Today, we heard:

He's doing awesome.  I agree with you that he's not 3 or 4 years old yet.  There's no way on God's green earth that something this lively and goofy could be over 2 years old!

We're going to forage some more sticks for him this afternoon (They had joked while they were here that they'd need to hunt up some dead trees for Max to play with, because he was doing his best to drag recently cut tree branches around the back yard).  He loves to prance around with them and taunt the girls (who are probably thinking, "What the heck do we want an old mossy stick for?").

And you were right about him being a quick learner.  We've been putting him in his crate at bedtime with a dog biscuit every night; but last night when he saw Josh getting out the biscuits, Max ran into the living room and curled up on the couch as quick as he could.  Josh said, "Do you think he realizes that I'm going to put him in his crate?" I said, "Ummm, Yeah, I really do think he's picked up on that."

And then, the very best part of all:

He is a joy to have around and we love having him.  If you guys are doing okay without him, we'd love to keep him.

He is obviously going to be spoiled completely rotten, as every dog should be.

It's a good good thing for him, even though we're all going to miss him (especially Abby).

What's Up, Guys?

(Max and Abby at the back gate, 12/23/08)

 I just love a happy ending. :)

UPDATE!

By popular demand, here's a picture of Max's new sister, Ruby the Pocket Pit. :D

Superb news, I used to work animal rescue and know how gratifying it is to find a forever home for the guys. Love it!
This one was especially pleasing for a couple reasons: We'd had him so long (over 2 months), he was a Pit and therefore much more challenging to place appropriately, he is being adopted into a very doggy family (extended family all have multiple dogs and take them everywhere), and we'll be sure of getting updates since Jeff and Ben are good friends. What a deal! :)
'grats on good goggie news!
I am very happy for you, Max and his new family. A wonderful story for a new year. Thank you.
I love this one. I think pits get a bad rap most of the time. My brother and many friends own pits and they all LOVE their dogs. All the dogs are docile and well behaved, good with kids etc. (except for my brother's dog, to much puppy energy just yet) Max is sure a handsome fellow. Glad everything worked out for all involved. Plus you get to visit often. It's a win win win win!
A pit-corgi?!!! Is there any way you can get a picture? Though Max is adorable enough on his own. I have a Jack Russell who people sometimes think is a miniature pit. Maybe I'll try and to pass her off as a "pocket pit." For Halloween. Congrats. That's a great story.
3 Woofs for you and Max. And also woofs for his new family. The boys sound awesome: they seem to know naturally the way to a dog's heart -- Kung Fu Panda!

And an extra final woof to you for "He is obviously going to be spoiled completely rotten, as every dog should be." It is merely what we deserve.

WOOF
I'm happy for you, for Max's new family, and most of all, for Max himself. This was a day brightener. =o) Rated.
This is so great! I'm happy for all of you.
What a great dog and a great home for him. Lucky dog!
Lucky pooch, lucky people, heart-warming story.
That is very cute! Those two are meant for each other. Love that last pic.
AWWWWWWWW! So much power packed into that little body. And the eyes! And the EARS.
Thanks all of you for stopping by!

MR, I agree completely. I'd always heard Pit owners talking about how sweet they are, but never REALLY believed it until we experienced Max. He is just the sweetest, most loving dog. It's really changed my attitude about them. And he is a handsome fella, eh? :)

CCC, thanks for the Woofs. I firmly firmly believe that every dog/cat/hamster/chinchilla/whatever deserves to be spoiled rotten. It's the least we can do, in return for everything they give us.

Juliet, she is a powerful little thing. And those ears slay me. She always has the one folded over. Goggie ears are just irresistable. :)
Excellent news!!! I'm a sucker for a happy ending!!!

... they are all gorgeous!!!
1IM, doesn't it just do your heart good? :)

Believe it or not, I actually picked up another stray yesterday, 1/10. That's a record for us--only 6 days between! She was a sweet little champagne cockapoo, obviously a woman's lap dog, lollygagging down the middle of a 45 mph country road in the rain. I was on my way to lunch with a friend but couldn't just leave here there to get hit! I picked her up, took her home, went to lunch, and then when the DH and I both got home, we went looking for family. The third house we stopped at, a woman was driving down the lane very slowly, and the DH asked--"Are you looking for a dog?" The answer was yes, and just like that, Daisy was home! She and Momma were both relieved. So were we--we don't need another guest dog that soon! :)
Glad for that happy ending after reading much about an Airedale missing in Mexico and her owner searching for days and days without success. Added you as friend on my blog.
Thanks, lemur! I just always think about how I would feel if it was my dog...I'd be frantic and heartbroken, thinking of her out there all alone. Only in a very few (2, I think) cases of severe neglect and abuse (obvious by the dog's condition) have we not even tried to find the original owners. Otherwise we try that before we look for an adoptive home.

I feel for that woman in Mexico.

Friended you too! :)
Thanks for such happy news! Max's new family sounds like a perfect fit. How is Abby doing with his absence? It seemed like the two of them were becoming fast friends.
Hi Lisa! Glad to hear you're feeling better.

Abby is doing better than I expected, actually. She had loads of fun playing with Max, but she seems to be happy to actually be able to lay down and chew on something in peace.

The cats, on the other hand, are beyond thrilled. :D
Awww, love ya, Merwoman. (It's OK. Mrs. C's asleep ;-)).

Btw, the virtually black and white pics are awesome. And the last one with just a splotch of color - dynamite.

WOOF
Thanks, pup! And despite the distraction of your assigned readings, I've actually managed to get about 5 or 6 inches knitted tonight. Knit a bit, read a bit, knit a bit, read a bit...Not a bad way to spend a Sunday evening.
Glad I finally got back to this one! Somehow my mail got all discombobulated and the first like 50 say January 11th (but they're from all over the calendar) and more recent ones are interspersed pages ago. But I remembered I wanted to read about Max! So happy he's happy; as is his new pack.
Thanks Connie! We could not have picked a better home for Max if we'd designed it from scratch ourselves. :)

The mail thing is way weird. One wouldn't think it would be that hard to do a date sort, would one? Sigh.
