Autumn lies ahead

a stretch of short lived colour

I move through it knowing what’s ahead

mood slowly turning dark

The smell of wood smoke

mixed with crisp air

speaks of warm interiors

and pleasant times

I slow down resisting the change

my shadow shorter in the fading light

as I turn inward

dreading the winter winds

So well expressed, Mary, though I myself look forward to the "The smell of wood smoke mixed with crisp air". And especially, this Autumn, I shall experience it in your neighborhood. Can't wait.
I'm dreading winter too. But autumn can be so sublime, it's worth it. Be well, poet.
Nice. ... I love autumn, but it never seems to last long here in Colorado. One day it's fall, and all too soon winter arrives with a hard edge. R.
Understood deeply. So well done. Rated with admiration.
" As I turn inwards..'', MCS so true, we carry seasons inside and even our behaviour has the changes of the seasons. In one day, one can be from autumn (melancholic),winter(angry), spring (wishful and strong again), summer (creative and doing), not in the exact nature seasons.

You always give so much, with your writing, so many thanks you for this.
Time to chill...as they say. After the relentless summers down here, I long for some Wisconsin autumn and a bit of winter. But just a bit!
The seasons move so fast sometimes and so slowly at others. I love this sensual poem with a hint of dread.
I love autumn more than any other season but I never dread a winter wind. I think of the delight of morning light on fresh snow.
You captured it perfectly, I love autumn but dread winter.
So lovely Mary. I dont mind winter but Steve hates it. In our job we drive a 60 mi radius M-F evenings, so poor boy does the driving and it is not fun. 'the smell o wood smoke' my fave as we just had hot dogs on fire last night...not too healthy but an ocassional sin. :)
