Decline of Spirit

What could have happened

to bring about such corruption

that the human element

is no longer present

What could have happened

that allows only greed to survive

the need for more always present

the hunger to acquire never sated

What could have happened

that some no longer see anyone

but themselves and their needs

and their desires the driving force

What could have happened

that permitted their humanity

to erode, their soul to die

their aura to blacken

What could have happened

that some no longer see

the humanity in others

the goodness that is possible

What could have happened

that allows some to be so far removed

from basic decency and compassion

and the act of giving a foreign concept

What could have happened

that drives the need

to control, to humiliate

those who still see beauty and feel

What a beautiful, sad contemplation. The rhythm of this is like a song. And the words - well, the words are just extraordinary. These thoughts occupy me and worry me quite often. I wish I had answers for you. But know you are not alone.
Rated with admiration.
I feel this so much during these times. There are those who are lost in the wilderness and those who are still very much alive and giving. Who knows what happened to those who are lost. So very sad. Your poem brings that reality to life. R
Well mcs since you ask
What could have happened
to bring about such corruption
that the human element
is no longer present?
I say wear and tear. Lots of evolution way too quick.

Uh yeah that is do unto others.
"What could have happened" is exactly it. Taking out their misery on the rest of us. You have such a wonderful way with words, Mary.
A cry in the wilderness....I don't know how it happened but humans are a pretty sorry lot.
Thank you everyone; it's so good to be back and even better to know I'm not alone in this way of thinking.
This is beautiful, and it's obvious to me that it doesn't need any heavy handed translating; it is about power, absolute power, and how absolute power corrups absolutely; it is about double standards and hypocrisy; it is about the sin, as defined by Joseph Campbell, whose description of sin is my favorite. He said that 'sin' is the resting of our psychological posture in an inoppripriate position, short of any perfect realization. Another words 'sin' is ignorance; 'sin' is a willingness to not care; to not want to understand; a willing lack of empathy; lacking compassion, etc....

Excellent work, this post.
