Salon Kitchen Challenge: Hot Soup

Rate: 3 Flag

Last week, we asked for your best solutions in case of emergencies. Our Open Salon heroes came to the rescue. Congratulations to Grace Hwang Lynch for Pasta Puttanesca and the saucy story that came with it. She's this week's winner with alternates Meg Whitlock for Emergency chocolate dump cake and Felisa Rogers for Black bean soup.

Also honorable mentions to: Theresa RiceKolika Elle KirkVivian HenochCatalyst 40+ and Paul J. O'Rourke.

This weekConsidering the bad-weather theme of this past week's challenge, it's surprising that there weren't more entries for soup -- I mean, when you're snowed in and cold, you may also be in a mood for some hearty, warming food.

But of course we don't need to have extreme weather to want that kind of satisfaction, so this week, please share with us your best hot winter soups.

Be sure to tag your posts: SKC hot soup

Please note that by participating, you're giving Salon permission to re-post your entry if it's chosen as a winner, and acknowledging that all words and images in your post are your own, unless explicitly stated. Adaptations of existing recipes are fine, but please let us know where the original comes from. And if you'd like to participate but not have your post considered for republication on Salon, please note it in the post itself. Thanks!

Deadline: 10 AM EST on Monday, January 10

Please note that by participating, you're giving Salon permission to re-post your entry if it's chosen as a winner, and acknowledging that all words and images in your post are your own, unless explicitly stated. Adaptations of existing recipes are fine, but please let us know where the original comes from. And if you'd like to participate but not have your post considered for republication on Salon, please note it in the post itself. Thanks!

Finally, if you would like your piece, should it win the contest, to be cross-posted on Salon under your real name, please include that information in your post. In other cases, your story will be republished under your OS pseudonym.

Hey Michael,
Thanks for the mention.

By sheer coincidence, soup's on the stove tonight. Split pea... probably not my first choice to photograph. Will see.
I reposted a Zucchini soup recipe from a while back. We're having it tonight in fact. When that's done there's the shank of a ham to make split pea. I love soup when it's chilly!
I love a winter root soup, but got nuttin' to say about it, except maybe mushy heaven.
I think it time to retire "Kitchen Challenge." At best, it has served to alienate many dedicated OS members as many flatly refuse to participate. Participants are fewer and fewer and "winners" are usually the same old crowd. Often, the recipe with most bizarre ingredients and/or equipment, "wins." I suppose the "contest" is good for salon.com, but opensalon.com, and I emphasize the word "open" is not salon.com

I was away when Kitchen Challenge was instituted. And I'm dismayed to see a lack of participation, or even knowledge with newer OS members, about Foodie Tuesday. There was a time when it was an exciting day to see the large number of great food posts. But they now get little recognition and are more closed than open to be put make cover. I hope that changes.

If you type in "soup" in the OS search engine, you will come up with dozens of different recipes. I propose that, like all OS posts, you choose the best from these.

I would hope that in the future, recipes that make cover are those chosen from Foodie Tuesday participants without the confinement of ingredients or a "contest."

We should endeavor to keep opensalon.com, just that. Open.
From the Midwest:

As one of the newcomers, and recent winners, I guess I'm one of the people you're talking about. And it's true, I'm not that keyed into the daily themes. The true story, for one, isn't appealing because most of my posts are true stories.

Anyway, I loved getting to have a story on Salon.com, it gave me a thrill.

But how about, the weekly challenge doesn't have a theme, why must it be a Kitchen Challenge? Or have a month of kitchen, then a month of, say, fashion, or emotions like anger etc. Just a thought.
megwc: there are OS themes for each day of the week. Tuesday's themes is "food." It's why it's called "Foodie Tuesday." I think the themes should be more readily available for people to view. Will try to find them for you.
If you click on the red link "What is Open Salon" on the upper left of the home page, the themes will appear. Here they are:

@midwest. Yes, I've already seen those categories. But do they win you a spot on salon? I will try one of those categories, but I like getting on Salon, it's fun.
@From the Midwest: You know the community a lot better than I do, but I have to say as a longtime reader of Salon, the Kitchen Challenge is always very enjoyable to read. I really can't speak to the alienation issues, so I won't. But I can say that it was a Kitchen Challenge that drove me to Open Salon the first time and then I ended up reading a lot more. For whatever that's worth. And of course that doesn't invalidate what you're saying -- just another point of view.
Wait, something called "chocolate dump" won???? Oh my god, I sooooo should have entered this time.

Hahaha, just kidding, I know my soup entry will win!! Teeheehee!!!

Just kidding, I know these contests are rigged against me. You all hate me!! WAAAA!!

**Runs off stage left in tears**
Rated, cause nothing sadder then an Ed I Tor's post not having a rate.

I hope your time here was good. I noticed you didn't make it over to my posts. That's okay, you did recognize poetry as a front cover material.

That'll probably get you shot, but dave's ego went up!!As did scanner's for putting him on the cover!! :D

Thanks for being open to cool writers ala friends of the House of Tink!!!

You're number two on the List of Best Editors. Don't tell Emily, she was only 3. :D
