Alrighty then. Now that I have your attention I would like you to consider for a moment the unfair laws against same sex marriages in our country.
I was reading a short article in my local paper today that claims the State of Florida is the only state that flat out bans gays and lesbians from adopting children according to the American Civil Liberties Union. It was only a three paragraph item on how one gay man is challenging the law in aFlorida appeals court in Miami, but it pissed me off something terrible.
The thought of a law that is so blatantly biased against a single group of people is beyond comprehension.
Thousands upon thousands of Florida children could be adopted by qualified loving couples except we can't have them being raised by those damned gays, ya know. Seems those children would be much better off being passed around in foster homes or just staying at the orphanage. That should teach them for not having parents.
Who comes up with this shit and actually has the balls to say it out loud and then vote to pass this nonsense into law? Somtimes I wonder if Florida isn't the very worst of the "Cracker States". I am sometimes ashamed to live here, but the weather is nice and the water is warm most of the year.
Anyway, not five minutes later, I got the notice from the Human Rights Campaign that I copied below, so I took that as an omen to get busy. I hope I don't get sued for copyright infringments, but screw it. It's too important to let go plus they told me to pass it around.
If you're interested in equal rights for all, take a few minutes to read the letter and take the five question survey and send it to Congress. It only takes a few minutes to do your part and share it with like minded individuals.
I feel these email campaigns carry a lot of weight because they are easy to participate in. I hope you feel the same way. Now, let's get busy.

You can help us build the momentum we need to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Only 48 hours left to take the survey and tell Congress how DOMA hurts you and the people you love!

Dear michael,
Only 48 hours left to make sure your DOMA survey is delivered to Congress!
The Defense of Marriage Act denies lesbian and gay couples the full rights of marriage. Help us give Congress thousands of first-hand reasons why this law should be repealed.
The constant drumbeat against the Defense of Marriage Act has not gone unnoticed by President Obama.
His administration just filed a new court brief on DOMA, after HRC and other groups criticized an earlier one. While the new brief still says the administration has to defend the law, it now calls DOMA discriminatory (not "neutral") and is free of arguments that disparage LGBT families.
It's a start, but it's not enough.
To keep up the pressure, we've launched a survey designed to give Congress and the president a first-hand look at how DOMA hurts the people we love.
Why are these surveys so important now?
After the string of victories in Iowa, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire, tens of thousands of lesbian and gay couples are finally joining in marriage. But thanks to DOMA, the federal government still refuses to recognize a single one, denying all of them Social Security survivors' benefits, equal treatment under U.S. immigration laws, the right to take family and medical leave to care for a spouse.... The list goes on and on.
While the president has disavowed DOMA in statements and speeches, we need to make it clear that we expect him to do more.
It's not enough to wait for the courts or Congress to act. We need the president to take a leadership role in defending every citizen from discrimination.
It doesn't matter if you've been personally discriminated against by this law, you know someone who has, or you think it's just plain wrong to deny loving lesbian and gay couples the full rights of marriage.
Your perspective matters and Congress needs to hear it.
Together, we have the power to overturn this discriminatory law once and for all.
Warmly,

Joe Solmonese
President

Thanks for this and, seriously, WTF? How stupid ARE people? If they don't want gays adopting then why don't they ALL go out and adopt three or four kids who need homes? Until then...they are just asses in my book.
Good job, Mikey.
Gonna go to the river for a week now. See ya on the flip side.

Those would be politicians and sometimes, a lot actually, they can be dumb, very dumb, dumb isn't really the word to use but...:)
Filled out and submitted.
Anyways, welcome back!!!!
I agree with you on this.. There are thousand of children out there in the US that could be adopted to loving parents but the law says they can't. F'n Crazy and stupid.
Knowing for a fact of how many children are abused and mistreated every year by their parents. When this law could be changed to make a difference in the lives of many children.. I will read it now...
Funny thing is is that most of the people that live here are from other parts of the country. It's like a Republican melting pot of ignorant goo, but we did go for Obama, so that is an improvement.
EhVah, Thanks so much.
Tink, funny those same politicians take an oath to uphold the Constitution and then pass these ignorant laws that suck. Thanks for the welcome back!Fireeyes, I know your concern for the children. Laws like this make no sense at all.
Florida is, well, yeah a cracker republic. But it doesn't end there. I sooooooo wonder why we (a supposedly pretty smart and progressive nation) couldn't be a little more European. America somehow got the curse of dumb.
: )
DeepCleav, That is so funny! Gays should definitely be allowed to be as miserable as the rest of us!
Trig, Gracielou started calling me Bitch very early on and it's just kind of stuck. I do enjoy it.We seem to be a long way from the free society we've managed to convince ourselves that we are. It's good to be home.
Owly, was just up in your neck of the woods, but didn't have much time to stray. Thanks so much for stopping by.
Zuma! I've missed you! I thought the title would drag some liberals in to beat me with a stick, but I think you all know me too well.
Karin, Just doing my civic doody. (spell checker is broke)
The group it is blatantly biased against is the children, who will have a smaller pool of potential parents to choose from. I sure hope it's not also the case that there are kids waiting to be adopted because there are not enough parents willing and able to take them.
Kent, You are so right about that. The children are truly the ones to suffer most. I'm surprised that I haven't heard of anyone going to bat for the children that could be adopted by gay parents. Seems like a no brainer. I can't think of any study that says gays have no parenting skills. I can think of plenty of hetero people that shouldn't be parents though.
Thanks, Cathy! It's good to be home. I've missed you too!
Sally, don't start any rumors we can't live up to. What would the neighbors say? But then, who doesn't love a good scandal?
Ardee, I guess I can't fool anyone around here anymore. Hehehe. I hope I haven't lost my edge, but it's good to be back.
Steve, Let's not give your legislature any ideas. Mums the word over here.
by 'backwards crackers' i meant the local politicians, not the good citizens of the sunshine state, of course. k?
dammit! gracielou's never called ME a bitch. sniff.
when i wuz much younger, i thought the only good part about being queer was you didn't contribute to the over-population of the planet. now you've ruined that important asset by participating in raising surplus kiddiewinks.
the obvious solution, if the dogfood option doesn't appeal, is for the usmc to sponsor orphanages. this cures the recruitment problem at it's root, as well as giving the kids a trade. butch gays can join the core, raise the kids, and fight beside them. everybody happy.
Cap'n, The Anita Bryant thing was before I even moved to Florida, so good work on knowing your history. Still I see the problem IS the voting people of our state. After all they are the ones that elect these morons. When I look back on my voting record in Florida, I can honestly say that I've lost at picking almost every candidate. It allows me to sleep at night.
PS. I'll call you bitch if you want me to, but it won't have the same flair as when Gracielou does it.
Dynomyte, I so agree with you. If anything, gays are more level headed than a lot of straight parents that I've known. I know they are hard working compassionate people for the most part.
Al loomis, glad to see your compassion for the less fortunate come shining through. We should definitely grind up the orphans and do something about those damn queers. If you were to move to Florida, I would think you'd have a good chance of getting elected to state congress.
Sacto, I sometimes think our politicians spend too much time in the sun. Over baked gray matter is the only real excuse I can render for some of the crap that goes on down here. In Crist's defense, he did back Obama so he gets only a slight pass in my book. And we do have some great college football teams, so all is not lost. Go Gators!
~sigh~
Keep up the fight. Eventually, we will outlive these dinosaurs I hope.
JK Brady, I love that!
JRDog, It seems you are the only one I surprised with the title. You all know me too well. Hehehe.
Penguin, (why do I always want to spell Penguin with a Q?) I can't think of a single reason not to allow gays to adopt or marry. The arguments against it hold no water at all. We are a long way from being the free country we so proudly profess to be.
Mary, Unevolved is a very good way of putting it and I couldn't agree more. Thanks for your support. Every voice counts!
Sirenita, Hugs to you sweet lady! I never spell your name right the first time, either. I'm a doof.
