If you must know, just go down to the post office. I'm the third profile from the left, though the photo is not very flattering. Through the course of my life, I've spent most of my money on motorcycles, drinking, drugs and chasing wild women. The rest of the money I just wasted. I Say, To Hell With Gay Rights!!!

Rate: 34 Flag

Alrighty then. Now that I have your attention I would like you to consider for a moment the unfair laws against same sex marriages in our country.

I was reading a short article in my local paper today that claims the State of Florida is the only state that flat out bans gays and lesbians from adopting children according to the American Civil Liberties Union.  It was only a three paragraph item on how one gay man is challenging the law in aFlorida appeals court in Miami, but it pissed me off something terrible.

The thought of a law that is so blatantly biased against a single group of people is beyond comprehension.

Thousands upon thousands of Florida children could be adopted by qualified loving couples except we can't have them being raised by those damned gays, ya know.  Seems those children would be much better off being passed around in foster homes or just staying at the orphanage. That should teach them for not having parents.

Who comes up with this shit and actually has the balls to say it out loud and then vote to pass this nonsense into law? Somtimes I wonder if Florida isn't the very worst of the "Cracker States". I am sometimes ashamed to live here, but the weather is nice and the water is warm most of the year.

Anyway, not five minutes later, I got the notice from the Human Rights Campaign that I copied below, so I took that as an omen to get busy. I hope I don't get sued for copyright infringments, but screw it. It's too important to let go plus they told me to pass it around.

If you're interested in equal rights for all, take a few minutes to read the letter and take the five question survey and send it to Congress. It only takes a few minutes to do your part and share it with like minded individuals.

I feel these email campaigns carry a lot of weight because they are easy to participate in. I hope you feel the same way. Now, let's get busy.

Subject: Just 48 hours to take your stand against DOMA

You can help us build the momentum we need to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Only 48 hours left to take the survey and tell Congress how DOMA hurts you and the people you love!

Human Rights Campaign

Dear michael,

Only 48 hours left to make sure your DOMA survey is delivered to Congress!

The Defense of Marriage Act denies lesbian and gay couples the full rights of marriage. Help us give Congress thousands of first-hand reasons why this law should be repealed.

The constant drumbeat against the Defense of Marriage Act has not gone unnoticed by President Obama.

His administration just filed a new court brief on DOMA, after HRC and other groups criticized an earlier one. While the new brief still says the administration has to defend the law, it now calls DOMA discriminatory (not "neutral") and is free of arguments that disparage LGBT families.

It's a start, but it's not enough.

To keep up the pressure, we've launched a survey designed to give Congress and the president a first-hand look at how DOMA hurts the people we love.

Why are these surveys so important now?

After the string of victories in Iowa, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire, tens of thousands of lesbian and gay couples are finally joining in marriage. But thanks to DOMA, the federal government still refuses to recognize a single one, denying all of them Social Security survivors' benefits, equal treatment under U.S. immigration laws, the right to take family and medical leave to care for a spouse.... The list goes on and on.

While the president has disavowed DOMA in statements and speeches, we need to make it clear that we expect him to do more.

It's not enough to wait for the courts or Congress to act. We need the president to take a leadership role in defending every citizen from discrimination.

It doesn't matter if you've been personally discriminated against by this law, you know someone who has, or you think it's just plain wrong to deny loving lesbian and gay couples the full rights of marriage.

Your perspective matters and Congress needs to hear it.

Together, we have the power to overturn this discriminatory law once and for all.

Warmly,

Joe Solmonese

I'm back and I sure missed you folks.
I missed you. Bitch.

Thanks for this and, seriously, WTF? How stupid ARE people? If they don't want gays adopting then why don't they ALL go out and adopt three or four kids who need homes? Until then...they are just asses in my book.

Good job, Mikey.
Gonna go to the river for a week now. See ya on the flip side.
I forgot to say FIRST!
Garcieluoooooooo!!!! Thanks for calling me bitch. I just don't get these people at all. Anyway, enjoy your trip to the river. Wish I was going with you. I need a vacation from my vacation, ya know.
Glad to have you back. That's a raw deal in the Sunshine State. Are there still states deny people from adopting children of color from parents of a different color. That always griped my ass!!This is a great Post Mike, OS is a better place when you're around.

"Who comes up with this shit and actually has the balls to say it out loud and then vote to pass this nonsense into law? "

Those would be politicians and sometimes, a lot actually, they can be dumb, very dumb, dumb isn't really the word to use but...:)

Filled out and submitted.

Anyways, welcome back!!!!
Missed ya Dude! Tell your hick relatives to go high tech. lol
I agree with you on this.. There are thousand of children out there in the US that could be adopted to loving parents but the law says they can't. F'n Crazy and stupid.
Knowing for a fact of how many children are abused and mistreated every year by their parents. When this law could be changed to make a difference in the lives of many children.. I will read it now...
Scanner, Thanks for the visit and the kind words. Before moving to Florida years ago I had felt that it was a more progressive state than others in the south. Seems everyday that I'm reminded otherwise. Hopefully we can begin to turn a little more blue in the future.
Funny thing is is that most of the people that live here are from other parts of the country. It's like a Republican melting pot of ignorant goo, but we did go for Obama, so that is an improvement.

EhVah, Thanks so much.

Tink, funny those same politicians take an oath to uphold the Constitution and then pass these ignorant laws that suck. Thanks for the welcome back!Fireeyes, I know your concern for the children. Laws like this make no sense at all.
I can't stand this whole thing with Gay Rights. There shouldn't even be a discussion. We shouldn't even hafta think twice about it. Thank goodness somebody finally shut Rick Santorum the fuck up, but still, plenty persist. Unbelievable...
It's cool how Gracielou calls you BITCH. and by the way welcome back! The place ain't the same without you Mike and I was wondering wtf happened to ya.
Florida is, well, yeah a cracker republic. But it doesn't end there. I sooooooo wonder why we (a supposedly pretty smart and progressive nation) couldn't be a little more European. America somehow got the curse of dumb.
Michael Rogers is back! Yay! I clicked on your post for you, not your provocative title, and because I knew that it would be something goooood.
Been there, did the survey - thanks, Michael, for bringing it to our attention!
This is a good thing that you're doing.
: )
Signed and rated. Thanks, Michael.
Victor, It is shear insanity that we have to have these conversations and battles over basic human rights.

DeepCleav, That is so funny! Gays should definitely be allowed to be as miserable as the rest of us!

Trig, Gracielou started calling me Bitch very early on and it's just kind of stuck. I do enjoy it.We seem to be a long way from the free society we've managed to convince ourselves that we are. It's good to be home.

Owly, was just up in your neck of the woods, but didn't have much time to stray. Thanks so much for stopping by.

Zuma! I've missed you! I thought the title would drag some liberals in to beat me with a stick, but I think you all know me too well.

Karin, Just doing my civic doody. (spell checker is broke)
“The thought of a law that is so blatantly biased against a single group of people is beyond comprehension.”

The group it is blatantly biased against is the children, who will have a smaller pool of potential parents to choose from. I sure hope it's not also the case that there are kids waiting to be adopted because there are not enough parents willing and able to take them.
Continuing my thought... In other words, the ACLU or someone should file an individual or class action suit on behalf of the children, demanding that they have a choice of possible parents that includes gay people. It's easy to see this as a gay rights issue, but gays are not the only ones whose rights are infringed here. Unadopted children should have standing to sue.
Done and done. We better be careful, Babycakes, we both came back here around the same time... people will talk. ;)
Oh, Michael, I knew that headline was a tease. Thanks for returning to us in fine cocktail hour form.
Don't tell anyone in Oklahoma about the Florida law. Our legislature would pass it in a heartbeat.
Stephen, Thanks for helping. Your deeds won't go unnoticed.

Kent, You are so right about that. The children are truly the ones to suffer most. I'm surprised that I haven't heard of anyone going to bat for the children that could be adopted by gay parents. Seems like a no brainer. I can't think of any study that says gays have no parenting skills. I can think of plenty of hetero people that shouldn't be parents though.

Thanks, Cathy! It's good to be home. I've missed you too!

Sally, don't start any rumors we can't live up to. What would the neighbors say? But then, who doesn't love a good scandal?

Ardee, I guess I can't fool anyone around here anymore. Hehehe. I hope I haven't lost my edge, but it's good to be back.

Steve, Let's not give your legislature any ideas. Mums the word over here.
I have always said that Florida is nothing more than Alabama with a beach. Having lived in Bama I know of what I speak. Bassackward thinking to placate the elderly and daytime unhooded citizenry. They would rather place children with the secretly pedophile than the openly gay Floridians, Cause da book is agin it!
well it is anita bryant country. they even arrested poor little peewee herman. what did you expect of those backwards crackers?

by 'backwards crackers' i meant the local politicians, not the good citizens of the sunshine state, of course. k?

dammit! gracielou's never called ME a bitch. sniff.
hey, deepcleave stole that line from me...
Some of the most capable and well balanced people I know are gay; in relationship with another gay; both of whom are straight or bi if they could find the partner they're looking for; but gay in the meantime. I'm lookin' for a nice, pretty, healthy, kind, giving, no nonsense straight woman (like myself) who isn't consumed by herself, plz thank you. This is one helluva sign I'm puttin' up. She might be a (an ex) stripper. Dunno. Don't even know why I said that. Stream of consciousness wish I had a hot stripper mentality. Right on.
adopting children is wrong. unnatural. if parents are unwilling to raise, or unable, the clear and natural solution is to convert them to dog food, humanely of course.

when i wuz much younger, i thought the only good part about being queer was you didn't contribute to the over-population of the planet. now you've ruined that important asset by participating in raising surplus kiddiewinks.

the obvious solution, if the dogfood option doesn't appeal, is for the usmc to sponsor orphanages. this cures the recruitment problem at it's root, as well as giving the kids a trade. butch gays can join the core, raise the kids, and fight beside them. everybody happy.
Amen Michael. And let's not forget other Florida fiascos like Elian Gonzalez, Terri Schiavo, the previously mentioned Anita Bryant, the 2000 election starring Katherine Harris and the hanging chads, flaming executions, bloody executions, and that famous Gator yell, "don't taser me, Bro!" Abandoning orphans is only the latest travesty perpetuated by the RWNJs who run the state, and don't let that Charlie Crist fool ya'll, he knows who his base is. Ah yes, my home state doin' me proud--not! Thanks Michael, for pointing out this textbook case of fearmongering trumping good ol' decency and common sense. And go Gators.
Florida is just too conservative Michael. It is a stuffy crowd around my parts and it really gets me miffed. Fear feeds ignorance. I'm surrounded! Thanks for the info and I will be contacting congress.
David Cox, You know of what you speak. I get the elderly being set in there ways, but I don't get the attitude of the younger transients around these parts. Fortunately for us, the younger generation seems to be much more liberal than their parents, but it will take a while for their numbers to grow.

Cap'n, The Anita Bryant thing was before I even moved to Florida, so good work on knowing your history. Still I see the problem IS the voting people of our state. After all they are the ones that elect these morons. When I look back on my voting record in Florida, I can honestly say that I've lost at picking almost every candidate. It allows me to sleep at night.

PS. I'll call you bitch if you want me to, but it won't have the same flair as when Gracielou does it.

Dynomyte, I so agree with you. If anything, gays are more level headed than a lot of straight parents that I've known. I know they are hard working compassionate people for the most part.

Al loomis, glad to see your compassion for the less fortunate come shining through. We should definitely grind up the orphans and do something about those damn queers. If you were to move to Florida, I would think you'd have a good chance of getting elected to state congress.

Sacto, I sometimes think our politicians spend too much time in the sun. Over baked gray matter is the only real excuse I can render for some of the crap that goes on down here. In Crist's defense, he did back Obama so he gets only a slight pass in my book. And we do have some great college football teams, so all is not lost. Go Gators!
Hey, Michael, I seem to always be late to the party but I finished the survey. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
:;gah:: I didn't even realize you were gone. How self-absorbed am I? Welcome back and great post. I never get why so many in a country that spouts off about "freedom" all the time limit it to just "people like us."

~sigh~

Keep up the fight. Eventually, we will outlive these dinosaurs I hope.
Well I must admit your pm spooked me a bit LOL Great post!
What a great post. One of my best friends is a gay male. He would love nothing more than to be a parent and would adopt at the drop of a hat and be a damn good father. Unfortunately, he's not allowed to. I just don't understand it some times. And welcome back.
Glad you're back Michael...you were missed! Thanks for this post...for me it truly shows how unevolved we are as a species. Survey taken and sent. Rated!
Thanks for this post and welcome back.
Life is Good, Running late and being behind is a way of life for me, too. It's not for the meek.

JK Brady, I love that!

JRDog, It seems you are the only one I surprised with the title. You all know me too well. Hehehe.

Penguin, (why do I always want to spell Penguin with a Q?) I can't think of a single reason not to allow gays to adopt or marry. The arguments against it hold no water at all. We are a long way from being the free country we so proudly profess to be.

Mary, Unevolved is a very good way of putting it and I couldn't agree more. Thanks for your support. Every voice counts!

Sirenita, Hugs to you sweet lady! I never spell your name right the first time, either. I'm a doof.
