It's Just an Optical Illusion, Silly!

Rate: 62 Flag

I've been fascinated with optical illusions since I was a little kid. Some would argue that I haven't matured much since then, but that's another story. They all have the ability to trick your eye, or trick your mind or both.

Some were developed by brainiac psychiatrists or scientist to test their subjects like ghinea pigs. "Do you see a mountain goat or a astronaut in the picture?" "You see a naked lady? Hmmm. Very interesting."

There are some that have colorful patterns that seem to move, while others appear to be different things when viewed from different angles or different distances. Some are downright artistic in nature and have the ability to grab the viewer's attention for hours as they marvel at the intricacies of the details.

I've come to the conclusion that they all have one thing in common. They are all designed to mess with your head. There seem to be millions of these in that series of tubes we call the internets and I've compiled some of them here for your pleasure. I hope you enjoy them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                                      I call this one "The Joe Wilson".
 It looks like some scribble of a guys face, but tilt your head to the right and you'll see the true meaning.
                              A5
Looking for those flashbacks they promised you? This one's for you. If you stare at one spot, things are fine, but if you take a look at other areas of the illusion, things get a little woozy.How do they do that?
Optical 1
Like I said, some are very imaginitive and artsy. Stand across the room and this one will obviously just look like a face, but up close you can see that it is cleverly made completely from hands instead.
       Optical 2
This one is weird. If you follow the space around the perimeter, all you will see is a space rotating around the clock, but stare at the X in the center and you will see a green dot rotating around the clock.
                      Optical 6
                                                         Trippy, man.............
Optical 9
The center of this one seems to move, but I know it's not. Or is it?
Optical 11
Do the rings seem to flash on this one or is it just me?
Optical 12
                         Optical 13
 This one just bugs me.
Optical 14
I know! No way are those perfect circles, but they are.
Optical 15
What up with this one?
Optical 16
 M R Ducks, M R not Ducks............M Ducks make me dizzy.
Optical 17
                                                This one is weird.
1-  Relax and concentrate on the four dots in the middle of the image for about 30-40 seconds.
2-  Then, take a look at any solid color (white works best)  flat object like a wall or the ceiling.
3-  You sill see a circle of light developing.
4-  Start blinking your eyes. Cool.
A1 jesus
I just like the colors on this one.
Optical 18
Tubular, dude.
Optical 20
It looks real, but is this really possible? I don't think so.
               Optical 21
This one sucks and has no business being in here. I need to talk to the editor.
Optical 22
I should have included more like this, but most of the ones I found needed a larger image to appreciate how good they really are.
Optical 22
Boing, boing, boing, boing.............
Optical 23
Does the one on the right look like it's leaning more? It's not. They are both the exact same image.
Optical 24
I love this one!
Optical 26
Tricky bastards, aren't they?
                          Optical 28
I've heard about women who are all legs and ass, but this is ridiculous!
                           Optical 29
Ambiguous ambiguity.
                            Optical 30
                                  Another weird one same rules.
1-  Relax and concentrate on the four dots in the middle of the image for about 30-40 seconds.
2-  Then, take a look at any solid color (white works best)  flat object like a wall or the ceiling.
3-  You sill see a circle of light developing.
4-  Start blinking your eyes. What's up with that? Cool.
   Optical 31
This is one of my favorites and I could stare at it for hours. (I know I can, because I have)  If you look away or stare long enough, the model will seem to switch her rotation, even though she doesn't. Or maybe it's just me. Tinkertink will be stuck on this one for days.
             Optical 32
Woozy again.
Optical 33
Farther back you see one thing, up close you see other things.
Optical 33
    Gah!!! Stop that!
                         Optical 36
              Same rules. Stare at the X. I can't tell who this is. Can you?
    optical 37
 This one will totally mess with you.
Optical 38
This one is just weird. Both of the mice are standing on the same color square. I call bullshit. It looks like total BS until you compare the gray shades with the matching bar on the right in the same image below.
Optical 45
                                               Is that weird or what?
Even the elephant looks surprised!
  Optical 34
Optical 39
Yes, I know that this is just some kids playing at the beach, but it's still pretty cool.
                   Optical 40
Spirally spirals.
Optical 41
 Dude's weird.
                          Optical 42
                        The spider really isn't moving. It's an illusion, silly!
                          Optical 46
                                                                Gah!!!
Optical 47
             I dunno.
                           Optical 48
Optical 50
 Trick photography, I think.
                            Optical 51
                                                           I like this one.
Optical 52
                  The water seems to be running uphill. Is that possible?
        Optical 54
Optical 55
 Looks like Ben Franklin, but it looks like Nicholson, too!
        Optical 57
                                           Yes, they are perfect circles.
    Optical 59
                                               Don't try this at home.
              Optical 60
                                                       I.....don't.....know.
                       Opticl 48
                                                   Flying bugs. Weird.
Optidal 25
                                                             Cool!
  Optiycal 58
                           And finally my favorite. Can't Read it?
Keep moving farther away from the screen until you can.
Some of you may have to back all the way across the room.
         Optical 10 No sex gif
I know it's a lame post, but I don't get out much.
Okay, my eyes are really tired now.
Whoa! I'm cross eyed. Great post - many of these are amazing! The wheat bearing couple and the horses are two favorites. Thanks for the trip, dude!
Lame? I'm bookmarking this post! Zumapick and rated.
This is way cool. I won't charge you for the Advil. ;)
That Japanese woman with four eyes was the weirdest one, but I NEVER saw the supposed "boat" with the bikini chick.
why you gotta fuck wit me Mikey?!!!
It's official. I've spent more time looking at this post than any other OS post -- ever!
Very cool... now i understand why I got bad eyes! ~R~
No sex causes bad eyes. I LOVE these things. Many I had sing, and I believe the face in question is Johnny Cash but could never get it to come up (that's what SHE said). Talk about NOT growing up.
Oh Contraire, Mon Fraire!
This rocked...I always love to see the dancer & "stare at the spots" ones. My eyes are seeing a few stars now. It's all about visual fields...craziness.
I loved this! (Rated).
P.S. Love the Beetlejuice Avatar!
DUDE! Some of those MOVE! Sweet! :)
Pawed!
There's a car and waterfall in those pics??
COOL!!
;)
These are really good ones! I love optical illusions...Thanks!
These will take a second third fourth look.... thanks for the fun!
OMG! I'm BLIND now! WTF?!?!?
JK...Very cool Michael!
ooooh, noooo, michael, now i'm spinnnninnnnng. but they're way cool, dude.
I'm still seeing jim morrison on the wall. make it go away? lol
Very fun. One of them didn't work for me but I forgot which one it was. Great stuff. (Rated)
Great collection.
If a man can immediately identify the boat, the waterfall or the car, there is something wrong with his thalamus; he needs to see a neurologist.
Just what I needed just before going to sleep...sheesh! (Fun though.)
OOOOWW that hurt my eyes..lol
I stared at the spinning lady for over two hours, but I could never get her to spin the other direction -- she did stop three times to catch her breath, though -- or maybe she just got dizzy -- I know I did! Thanks for the headache, you bastard.
That totally fucked with my head. I haven't had such a trippy time since I drove out to Missouri with my boyfriend in my old Chevy back in '70 with a load of cheap acid. But that Jesus illusion--we have that all the time in my 'hood, on tortillas and such.
I loved all of these!
You have to be the funniest people in the world! Thanks a ton for the visits and comments. I really didn't expect this too fetch much attention, but it just goes to show that we really shouldn't judge our work. Just throw it out there and let the masses have at it.
This will teach me to post a piece and then go to bed. Thanks again and much love to all!
Wow, I've got bad eyes and my brain is twirling and I feel like I've just watched six hours of FoxNews on drugs. R
Love this - don't know where you found all of these. Thanks for sharing them!
Whoa! There should have been a warning before reading this post: Dramamine needed! I'm light headed, I'm dizzy. These were great! The ballerina is my favorite one too. We've shown it at parties and it's so fun to watch people getting frustrated, and some absolutely refusing to believe that the directions can be switched, which they can. This post is a keeper.
Sometimes it's reassuring to know your brain and eyes work in the way they should. Thanks for that.
Now pass the Advil.
I've seen a couple of these before, but you've got a lot in there I have never seen.
Now I have to go outside and re-orient my eyes. Thanks for that. :-D
This is a surreal way to wake up in the morning...
Bettlejuice, Bettlejuice, Beatlejuice....wait for it...BITCH!
I'm with Steve. And my eyes are tired, too.
Fun post. I like the "look at the dots and then look at a wall" ones. Who figured those out?
Way to be a complete distraction! The face made out of hands may look like a face from a distance, but it's the face of the Mummy, being unwrapped. Those psychedelic ones are giving me flashbacks, and Jesus seems to be on my ceiling now. I've read that the twirling dancer is supposed to indicate which side of your brain is dominant, depending on which way you think you see her rotating. I forget which is which, but I'm going to guess seeing her go clockwise means right, because I'm not having any trouble on the word/color test. Suck it, left brain.
Now I am filled with nostalgia for the days of going cross-eyed over Magic Eye pictures.
Fab post, Mr. Rodgers!
Damn good collection Micheal! Listening to Richard Dawkins, talk about his latest book "Greatest Show on Earth" and his previous "God Delusion" totally tripped a trigger with this... Dan Quayle misquote " Terrible Thing To Lose Ones Mind", fits here somewhere mon... Copied and RRR for creating a new form of Dementia, wow...
What a Long Strange Trip it's Been~~
R~
Love it. I'm dizzy now, but I loved it.
R
This is just too cool! Now that I'm nauseous, it's off to the Pepto-Bismol!
I love this post and optical illusions. This made my day!
I love this post and optical illusions. This made my day!
I love this post and optical illusions. This made my day!
uhh, how do I get off this ride?
cool post Michael!!
I'd leave a detailed comment but I gotta go to the store and get some Dramamine, asshole!
You should take up being a shrink with these tests, making up your diagnoses just like they do!
awesome.
I couldnt see the boat. I was really focused :p
And look at all this attention, rockin'!
Wow! Great collection, Michael. Some of these (for example, "Gah!!!" and "Woozy again.") really come to life if you scroll up and down while viewing them. Try setting your mouse wheel to not ratchet, it's even better.
The one with the water running uphill is by M. C. Escher. He said it is not a true perpetual motion machine, because some water must be added occasionally to account for evaporation. It is called "Waterfall" and good as it is it is by no means his best work. Go to Wikipedia to see more of his stuff. Also, Amazon has many books on his work. And, of course, Google has many of his images and other info.
Now for one that is sure to blow your mind. Go to http://www.magiceye.com/. I ran across this one recently and it promptly took over most of my day. This brings high tech to the already enchanting world of optical illusion.
You have a knack for this stuff, Michael, so I would like to encourage you to put together a sequel to this post using Escher and Magiceye. I'm sure many OSers would be grateful.
Thanks for a great post.
I never did see that boat or that car. I had better have my eyes checked again!
Monte
Not lame at all! Just amused myself for 10 minutes with this post. Now my eyes ache! Break time!
oh god...I didn't comment. I thought I did but my eyes were rolling around in my head like those cherries in a slot machine when I looked at this originally. as I scrolled again (down memory lane) I became woozy and fixated on the circles and the color illusions that so nauseated me days ago. THANK YOU for helping my dementia along.
Thanks for the fun, Mike! I have the same favs as aim and probably many others. I love the horses and the couple with the wheat
talk about illusions, michael. NO one has a body THAT effin' perfect, guy! and yes, i know firsthand that no sex causes poor vision, even blackouts! i intend to change that scenario right away...
