Intelligence Committee IQ Drops with Bachmann Appointment

Rate: 38 Flag

 Michele_Bachmann_05

The inmates may not yet be running the asylum, but they are getting a leg up with new House Leader John Boehner’s appointment of Michele Bachmann to the House Intelligence Committee. Well known by the left as one of the craziest people in Congress, Bachmann is notorious for blurting out all forms of inanities from calling out the media to investigate whether Congressional members are pro-American or Anti-American, to claiming the White House spent $200 million per day on a recent trip to Asia. A number the White House incidentally derided as “a long trip from reality.”

A darling of the loosely formed Tea Party, Bachmann brought them legitimacy by forming and chairing the Tea Party Caucus in the House last summer, thus bringing them under the Republican tent, as if anyone paying attention thought that Tea Party members were anything but Republicans in the first place.

IMHO, Bachmann has always danced on the rim of delusional fantasy (along with those who continue to vote her into office), but this appointment by Boehner calls his own sanity into question. He might find himself weeping in regret. Is this really the woman he wants knowing highly classified information and sitting on the board that oversees the CIA? Boehner has been known to hoist a few after working hours and should refrain from making such decisions until after the booze wears off.

Apparently Boehner felt he had to replace recently defeated Republican House Intelligence Committee member Pete Hoekstra, who was known to blurt out classified information to the press, with a comparable information faucet in need of a new gasket. As far as I know, Hoekstra was never truly reprimanded for his indiscretions by anyone on the right, so we can expect more of the same. Will Bachmann be in direct competition with WikiLeaks to see who can divulge the most classified information? I doubt it, but the old saying “loose lips, sink ships” does come to mind.

I often find the words coming from Bachmann's mouth entertaining in some, “I can’t believe she just said that out loud” kind of way, then I cringe when I remember she is one of our illustrious leaders. The fact that a politician like Bachmann continues to gain political power and is quietly (though, leakily) considering a run for President in 2012, should give us all something to think about for the next two years. Any reasonable Party would have run her out of Washington on a "too crazy to govern" or "she's an embarrassment" charge, but that would require a modicum of shame and that's a link in the genome that the GOP is conveniently missing.

Politics does make the best comedy at times. I will never understand why some people get elected. Never.
This lunatic scares the bejesus out of me, Michael. Can you imagine a Palin/Bachmann 2012 button? It would be like the U.S. being run by the Simpsons! God help us.

Lezlie
For some strange reason, Republican men don't seem to mind her or Palin. Because they think they're "hot".
If only this was satire.
Comedy of errors comes to mind here.
The drumbeat is louder every single day.
Calling out the stupid
A dangerous woman, this...
I should not have read this first thing in the morning. I'm nauseous and it ain't morning sickness (HA!). Seriously...Michele Bachmann? I'm with cartouche. It seems to all get down to that. Grrr..
You know, I never really thought of the "Hot" angle, but it makes a lot of sense. I've read where conservative men are far more likely to give good looking women a pass and I've also heard talk of it being one reason Fox News is so popular with conservatives with their obvious policy of hiring women on their looks rather than their character.
This would be funny if it weren't so frightening.
Isn't it wierd how the right wing is no trying to co-opt and utilize the "sex appeal" of female candidates? 15 years ago they were complaining that politics was "too sexual," so as to appeal to the Xtian Right.

Now they are "sexing-up" right wing politics, using female politicians with "model-good-looks." Look at Eva Perron. Then that new female president of Argentina, the model.
Then Sarah Palin (who recently got breast augmentation surgery).

Its a wierd, wierd world. Hopefully, the masses can see through it. If not, we must show them the way.
As somebody who worked on the Hill, I can tell you that they often try to isolate and marginalize congressmen by such appointments. They can give her miniscule info, to see how she handles herself, only to totally discredit her by saying she leaked info from the Houose Intelligence Committee. Her career would never be able to recover. Or they could use it over her head to manipulate her.

Politics, in reality, is far more machiavellian than most people realize.
Another good thing to remember is how the Prussian Nobility/Old Line German Conservatives tried to ally with the early Nazi Party, hoping to utilize their effectively potent lower-middle class, war veteran, Protestant Farmer, urban shopkeeper constituencies against the increasingly powerful working classes (then, represented by the Communists and Social Democrats).

This eventually bit the old line Prussians in the ass, as Hitler was able to outmaneuver both Ludendorff and Hindenburg.

We are fortunate that none of the current Tea Party leaders are as politically clever or intelligent as Hitler or Mussolinni. Perhaps this is intentional, though?

If you were a Big Time conservative power broker, you would only want easily controlled, foolish idiots running such a movement. Its easier to manipulate and control them.

They would totally NEVER allow a Pat Buchanan, Ross Perot or even Richard Nixon or George Wallace type to run such a party.

Interesting.
Sophieh, I so agree.

RW, great thanks for the visit. I am quickly becoming a fan of yours. You seem to have a much better handle on these things than I do and I always learn from your posts and comments. Bachmann makes my head spin sometimes. I know she desperately wanted that seat and the thought that the GOP may have given it to here to quiet her down never occurred to me. Keen insight.
I fear for this country. We have a huge amount of monkeys now running the show.
We are not going to have a bunch of bananas or a pair of swiped sunglasses left after they get through with us.
Rated with hugs
Proving yet again that "Intelligence Committee" is a dumb bovine creature.
I'm pretty sure Boehner is not stupid, and I think RW is right about the machiavellian nature of politics. Perhaps Boehner is just trying to keep face with the Tea Party crowd by appointing one of its darlings to an important post and, as RW suggests, maybe nullify her in the process.
Sometimes I just think the world is just a circus and the republicans are the clowns. What are Dems? Make-up artists!
That loon, that EVIL loon, on the Intelligence committee? The U.S. government would be a barrel of laughs, if it weren't so powerful and influential, threatening the wellbeing of the rest of us...
I am leaning toward Boehner wanting to keep control over Bachmann, but does anyone think that's possible? She is far too attention oriented and loves the limelight. She even sees herself in a Presidential light. I'm no psych major, but wow. Visions of grandeur are knocking on the door.
I wonder why out of 310 million people this is the best we can get to run the country.
On the other hand, it could also conceivably be seen that the GOP leadership wants to give her foreign policy credentials, so as to slowly build-her up, and give her gravitas. Perhaps they are trying to "groom her" with Establishment, intellectual, foreign policy credentials?

Maybe they saw what happened to Sarah Palin and the big fallout she received, when she was seen to lack not only Gravitas-credentials, but also basic foreign policy knowledge.

If you want to hire these "pretty, model-type women" for these positions, especially if they are big on personality and small on substance, you have some short-term political gains, but also some long-term problems.

The folks that vote in the Congressional elections and maybe a large portion of the masses in the electorate may be sexually attracted to her (men) OR want to be like her (women). BUT, that only works for small-time political offices. For the White House, or the Senate, you may need BIG TIME credentials with Gravitas, so that the ELITE TAKES YOU SERIOUSLY.

This may be an effort by Boehner and the GOP to train/mold and groom her for other positions. She may be able to learn how to "reign in" her show-horse tendencies, and become a workhorse in the process.

OR, she may just show up, learn stuff, and be more credible to the mainstream media and elite as a result.

This doesn't contradict what I said above, though, about trying to control her.

Strategy is often multi-faceted. You can accomplish many different things with a single tactic.

Fascinating topic.
I have worked with a woman who reminded me, visually and in every other way, of Michelle Bachmann.

This woman was a professional account manager, communicated well with others on the surface, but at points throughout the day would come out with batshit-crazy statements that made me think there was some oxygen shortage or gas leak around her desk.

An example: She has a picture of herself and her son with Glenn Beck on her desk. When our office was broken into twice in one month and two TVs stolen, she put another picture over the Glenn Beck one, so the thieves wouldn't steal the Glenn Beck photo.

Another example: She has her 14 year old reading the "Left Behind" series, and she's reading books on how demons and angels influence our lives.

Again, like Michelle Bachmann, normal on the surface --- batshit-crazy beneath the thin veneer.
I envision a Palin/Bachmann run for in 2012. It would be a gift from God for us Dems.
Lastly (sorry for all the comments) this shows us, through circumstantial evidence, the REAL GOP APPROACH TO GOVERNING.

The companies make all the rules and propose all the legislation and all the policies and strategies that the GOP takes. The Congressmen, Senators and others, they TOTALLY LACK DISCRETION.

The elected representatives really Don't matter, in much the same way that the British Royal Family doesn't matter in British Politics. They are just figureheads.

Same thing with most elected Republican Representatives/politicians. They can be nuttier than squirrel shit, and totally unpredictable, but the companies don't care. They just want "POPULAR FOLKS" who look good on TV, who can sell their propaganda to the American people.

They feel that there is nothing to lose, I guess, by having morons in important places, because these morons really don't make the decisions.

The corporate puppet-masters do.

Perhaps this is why Big Business and the top GOP Politicians aren't worried? They know, full-well, that Congressmen really have no true power or influence in that party? That the companies really pull the strings?
i hope she blurts out something that she learned in a classified session. i REEEEEAAALY hope she does.

oh, and i'll ditto what blu said above. please please please, let 'em run.
She was just on Minnesota Public Radio this morning and committed three howling Pants-on-Fire lies in 90 seconds. Example: 30 million of the uninsured--including "illegal aliens"-- will all get "free" health care coverage under "ObamaCare." I had to call the newsroom and demand a little fact-checking. The strategy is just to get the Big Lie out there. She knows her statements are never going to be "refudiated" with the same impact as the original offense.
Are there really fewer of us?
Seems that, every other day there's another of these mentally disjointed crazies to close to the core of govt.
I almost never esu the word however, bachmann, palin and their ilk are republicunts.
How disgusting they are, aren't they.
Great post - and of course terrifying. I think we should all just assume the crash position - it's going to be one rocky ride straight to hell.

Reminds me of Cristina Fernandex de Kirchner, President of Argentina (she comes from the Peronista Justicalist Party). They are a mix of left and right, but wished to join the socialist international, due to constant right-wing attacks.

Sexy women can help a political movement, just as much as a handsome man can. However, ideas and substance must always prevail and rule supreme.

This Bachmann chica, while she has big cajones, has a small cerebro
Don't worry about Michelle Bachman on the Intelligence Committee (oxymoron). The only time she'll leak any secrets will be to her tooth fairy and space alien friends.
You have about 2 years to practice saying "thank you Madam President" to her.
Boehner didn't give it to her as a reward. It's an attempt to box her in.

She likes the limelight and makes outrageous statements to keep the cameras on her. She was pushing for appointment to a couple of high profile committees that would give her a better platform.

Putting her on the intelligence committee effectively shuts her up since she can't talk about what they do. She's made it known she isn't happy about it.
She is scary! Congrats on the Editor's Pick!
Award winning! I have made a few comments on my blog about this reincarnate of Linda Blair in her starring film role... Maybe Ms. Bachmann is audition for her remake.
maybe the jokes on US. the voters. maybe the oversight committee has virtually no clout. or no OVERSIGHT. looks like the emperor has no clothes..... I think rw005g has a point. maybe the entire committee is just window dressing. and we didnt notice until Bachmann got on it..... yep, sounds about right to me.
Two thoughts on this woman:

First, there's something about her eyes. Watch her eyes. Something's going on (or maybe NOT going on) behind them.

Second, in a couple of years she's gone from total obscurity to the most recognized female face in Congress.

Who's fooling whom?
Being "hawt" is a big part of it. It's also this notion that words really don't mean anything. She could read the phone book, add the talking point of the week "Alphabetical order. Do you really want the government in charge of the way your NAME is listed? Will we stand for this Muslim driven assault on our FREEDOM? And then a Rupert Murdoch flunky presses a button, the Fox stations have a segment, and people all over the country are saying, "Did you know that the first phone books were produced by Hitler?"

Great fiction. Horrifying reality.
Thanks for writing this. I think it makes some very important points quite nicely. We'd better get it together and elect competent people in 2012. These things actually do matter.
How could this be!? It makes me want to run for something. Geez. Let's hope it boxes her in and buries her.
I usually try to avoid Bachmann posts so as not to have to face the fact that I want to shtoop her. I know. I hate myself for it.
I was on my way to repair a frig today and saw a truck parked at the curb.
The side of the truck read:
ORANGE PEKOE AMUSEMENT DEVICES
The back doors of the van were open and I saw palin, bachmann and o'donnell getting out.
If politicians were run out of DC on those two charges, there wouldn't be very many left. People like her cause me to take a deep breath and think, "What is going on?!"
Speechless. Again.~r
How about Palin and Bauchman for the republican ticket in 2012? What a riot that would be! It might be so entertaining that we elect them. Scary!
Why wasn't she censured for clearly lying about the India trip and some other things?

Now that she's in charge, maybe she will simply have a breakdown and then we'll be rid of her. It is one thing to ponce around acting stupid from the sidelines, but the pressure of a real job will do her in unless she's faking. Ha!
This is so rare that it required a second comment: Zumapick and congrats on the EP!
Congrats on the EP and Cover, Mike. This one deserves it. Very well written.

Not only is our state bird a loon, but one of our representatives is, too. It's embarrassing having her be from my state, although she doesn't represent my district. The rest of us can't figure out why the sixth keeps re-electing her either, but it started making more sense when I was in that area and drove by five mega-churches in about 20 miles.
Let's hope loose words sink turds
PS -- Am I mistaken or is that two EP's in a row? Better watch it or you'll be forced to give up your "I'm no a writer" shtick :-)! Congrats!!
