An over-rated holiday

Rate: 13 Flag

So many over emphasize

A day that glorifies

Balloons filled with

Shallow breaths

Flowers that were picked

For merely a random soul...

Sweet chocolate

That holds an underlying bitter taste

Because the mouth of the giver

Is sour instead of sweet

A forced day of love

Is worse than a lifetime of searching

For a soul that matches your own

This soul cannot be found

In a vase filled with random beauty

Or a box plumb full of delectable sweets…

Simple stated,

If you need a particular day to honor those that you love

Than that love is lacking

And as hollow as a cream centered chocolate

That was forgotten to be filled.

Life is short…don’t wait

Love those you love…

And fill their chocolate centers, their empty vases

With sweet love and cherished memories.

I understand your sentiment, it is very important to show your love for the people you love every day, not just on a designated holiday. But then, all holidays could be classified as such. Like only appreciating your mother on Mother's Day. Love is what makes the world go round, and we need to acknowledge the special people that make our lives worth while every second that we can. We never know when we will no longer be able too! We can all use such a reminder! xoxo
Actually the older I get I feel the same way about many other holidays. Sometimes the original sentiments feel like rituals; but hey, I still want my chocolate! Happy Valentine's Day to you, Michelle.
"Love" does NOT "make the world go round. Not in any sense of the word; not in any part of the world. Love is seldom real. Mostly it is the "idea of love" that we mistake for "love."

Watch closely those who profess great love for "all others". You'll soon see that their proclamations of "love" are pretty hollow. For a very good reason. That is NOT how humans experience the emotion of love. It is not a general thing that one spreads around like manure, trying to make a crop of "love" grow. It is a personal thing and we only truly feel it for a very few other people in our lifetime.

It demeans real love when we use it as fertilizer.....
.
nicely done. sentiments I believe we all feel. we can all use a day to say I Love You.. no harm in that one.
I'm with you...here's to love, flowers and chocolate every day of the year!
...be in Love, not fear...

You are so right! Let's express our love every day. Valentines Day can be a nightmarish day for so many, those who have had their hearts recently broken or the single set. Not my favorite either.
Exactly. The older I get the less enthusiasm I can muster for the Hallmark holidays! Every day is a holiday when you live with your very best friend.
Michele, this is a great poem and great truth!!! Thanks for posting it!

Thanks for all the lovely comments...glad you all enjoyed!
Biggest con job ever pulled on the public. Billions spent on a guilty conscience.
I agree! But it is always nice to be thought of on that day none the less...Your hubby has given you beautiful and thoughtful things on that day too...But I do think daily we need to say I love you to those we love..Not just on one day...BUT being the typical girl I am, It is sweet to get a silly heartshaped box of candy or card on that day or flowers...
I liked this very much. Life is so short, so true.
