Bio
I've done everything from recycling to teaching in a pre-school. Most recently I was for 10 years an acting and theater teacher as well as a pallet builder. I read a lot and I'm an old man who remembers the distant past with somewhat more clarity than this morning's breakfast. I've been blogging for a decade and I don't do "light". If you're looking for recipes, self-promoting displays of items made for sale, titillating stories about how I was a pimp for an afternoon, or the beauties of toasters, you've come to the wrong place. So It's Illegal to Be Homeless Near DisneyWorld?

Just about a year ago, a Deutchebank analyst figured out that by the end of this summer, more than half the mortgages in the country would be underwater. That process has begun. In May the mortgage delinquency rate - which the Masters of the Universe and their media puppets insisted would d/

The Israeli Flotilla Raid and the Mossad

The Israeli attack on the humanitarian aid flotilla has rightfully scandalized the world but it has also brought out the flocks of rabid pro-Israeli zealots who viciously attack anyone anywhere who dares to suggest that Israel isn't always right about everything all the time. It might be important t

Food Stamps Prime the Economic Pump

Globalization moved tens of millions of good jobs overseas to low-wage, low-tax countries; the banksters' refusal to loosen credit except for scams and rip-offs from which they would benefit has prevented legitimate businesses from borrowing money to grow on, thus adding jobs to a sputtering economy… Read full post »

Price Rises? In a Depression?

OK, what am I missing here?

The economy is growing steadily but slowly. The latest sign was a report Tuesday that industrial production rose a better-than-expected 0.8 percent in November. The portion of industrial capacity in use rose to 71.3 percent, from 70.6 percent in October. It shows that fac

Senate Dumps On Credit Card Interest Cap

Just a little while ago our gallant Democrat Senate - and I quote - "easily" defeated Bernie Sanders' bill to put a 15% cap on credit card interest rates the same day that CBS did a segment on the banks' sudden raising of already usurious rates on some of their

Homeless Explosion: Not So Invisible Any More

Anybody who's been reading me for any length of time isn't going to be surprised but it's coming as a shock to a lot of people. The NYT is all "Who could have expected this?"

Sacramento As the operations manager of an outreach center for the homeless here, Paul

End Game 2: Obama, SocSec, and Corporate Taxation

Avedon Carol says as well and as succinctly as it can probably be said.

I really, really wish Obama would stop using language that suggests that he thinks the Republicons are right about Social Security. Social Security is paid for. Social Security is not the thing that is sucking the

Troy Davis Appeal Rejected

It was never much of a chance, not with the robotic law-and-order types conservatives have been able to get assigned to the US Supreme Court filling up the seats, but it was a chance. If there was enough pressure, enough noise, enough people asking uncomfortable questions, maybe even Fat Tony Scalia… Read full post »

Why Ford Won't Sell Its 65mpg Car in the US

It's - wait for it - us. From Business Week:

If ever there was a car made for the times, this would seem to be it: a sporty subcompact that seats five, offers a navigation system, and gets a whopping 65 miles to the gallon. Oh yes, and the car

"You Can't Solve a Problem By Throwing Money At It"

How many times have you heard that from a conservative when you suggested health care for children or a boost in the minimum wage or a bigger education budget? Just about every time, I bet. It's one of their favorite aphorisms.

Apparently that's all out the window when it comes

Since Rev Nancy of the Church of Political Expediency took impeachment of Bush for high crimes and misdemeanors "off the table", we have all been talking about Truth & Reconciliation Commissions and War Crimes Tribunals and wondering how long it would take Europe to get around to indict… Read full post »

Troy Davis Clemency Denied

The one thing nearly everyone agrees on is that Troy Davis didn't kill Savannah Police Officer Mark MacPhail.

On Sept 23, ten days from now, Troy Davis will die by lethal injection for the murder of Mark MacPhail.

If that doesn't make any sense to you, consider it Georgia Justice.

Obama Gave a Great Speech But Can We Believe Any of It?

By all accounts Mr Obama's speech was more or less what we all wanted to hear.

Avedon Carol:

That was pretty much the speech I've been saying he should give, and I believe he made some sales with it. I'm willing to bet that a lot of people saw
