Cindy Crawford!!!

Rate: 33 Flag

For all of you body conscious people out there, I have news for you! You ain’t seen nothin’ yet! I have read more posts lately about weight than I care to. Take this for example:

“Then they slip into the most skanky clothes and parade through the beaches, city parks and streets disgusting those of us who actually care about their health and how they look.”

Another poster typed that she recently learned people on OS didn’t like her because she was fat, and has since deleted the post.

I certainly do not have a perfect body and I know diet and exercise are key to looking and feeling great. Our society is obsessed with youth and beauty yet, the older I get, the more comfortable I am with myself. I am thankful I have two legs that work and two arms that can reach over my head when I need something out of my cabinets. I am more thankful than any of you know.

When I see or hear people make fun of others because they do not fit in, it affects me deeply, to the very core of my being. A person I love with every breath I take does not fit in to any youth or beauty category. When she was born, she wore casts on her legs for over a year. Her mother was told this child would never walk, nor ride a bike. When she ate, food would come out of her nose because she had a hole in the roof of her mouth. She can’t open her hands because her fingers simply don’t work that way. While her sisters grew to over five feet six inches tall, she stayed at four feet, eleven inches. While her sisters wore high heels, she wore high-top tennis shoes because she has no arch.

When she goes out in public, people stare or make rude remarks. She was not kept hidden away, but forced out into every day life so she would learn to cope. As she grew, she had the most beautiful long, wavy, dark hair I had ever seen. She finally learned to walk at the age of three, after her younger sister walked across the room. She was bound and determined to follow her. Banana bike seats came out and she learned to ride a bike, as well. In high school, she drove a Mustang with elevated pedals.

Life for her has not been easy, but she doesn’t let anything stop her. My mother died last April and my little sister, Theresa, took a turn for the worse. I spent over a week sitting by her side in intensive care until she could breath on her own again. She is 51 yrs old now and has an attitude like you would not believe. She goes to work every day and bought herself a horse that she is learning to ride. She makes friends wherever she goes because she has absolutely no prejudices and a wonderful sense of humor. She's learned all too hard, her weaknesses, but she also learned her strengths. She's accepted her looks and lived her life with grace and zeal. She has a heart of gold. So, when I sound harsh on your posts, hopefully you will have a better understanding of where I am coming from.

This year, my youngest sister decided to take Theresa along on her Florida vacation. I received an e-mail from her telling me they ran into Cindy Crawford on the beach and she was kind enough to allow them to take pictures of her. So, for all you people who wish you had the perfect body, I say, “Live your life with zeal and be thankful!”

And I offer you this, my amazing and imperfect little sister...

your little sister is awesome MAWB, and so are you for doing this post. good on you both.
What an incredible woman Theresa is and how eloquently you describe her struggles and triumphs. Our society's obsession with youth, beauty, and thinness is pathological. When I was young, we danced; we didn't go to gyms. We worried about our political authenticity; were we guilt of bad faith? Such discussions were best held while eating hot fudge sundaes. As women have become liberated in so many ways, they have become imprisoned in many more.
Thank you nana and Redstocking Grandma for stopping by in the middle of the night!! There are a million stories I could tell you about her... one really stands out. She was in grade school in the 60's and "handicapped" children were not allowed in regular classrooms nor on the playground at schools so as not to upset the other children. My sister is not mentally disabled in any way, shape or form, yet she was kept with children who were because of her looks. My mother finally went to the school board when my sister entered high school and said, "Enough of this shit!"

The funny thing was, the "popular" football players and basketball players would see her and carry her up the stairs so she didn't have to walk. She became friends with all of them!
oh thank you for this wonderful story and photo!!! she is adorable and has clearly come to love and accept herself as she is. that's a lesson for all of us. shit, mawb, i was going to post an i can't fit into my fat jeans post and now you've shamed me out of it. you owe me a new topic!!! love love love and gratitude
Oh Theodoradarling! Write what you feel! Let it all out! Sometimes we need to write certain things to get a better perspective of ourselves so we can move forward!

You couldn't sleep either? Or are you on the other side of the world?
Thank you for sharing this.

Brilliant!
So wonderful! What a gift your sister is!
Teachers, leaders, heros and saints come in all forms. Rejoice!
p.s. I *love* the photo, such joyous power!
I hate to say this ... but I would be one of those looking at your sister ... so I could what her tattoo was, and to try to figure out what was in her drink.

Beauty is truly, and honestly, in the "imperfections".

Your sister?

Is beautiful.

Anyone who says otherwise should be punched in the junk.
Your sister is truly one of the "beautiful people".
Oh, yes, and you too for sharing her with us. Thank you!
What a sweet loving tribute and a good lesson for us all.
Take that, miserable Mme. B. Rated rated rated.
This needs to be on the COVER!!! This is the kind of story we need when so many are hurting. Kudos to you and 'Lil Sis. She is an inspiration to us all.
What a perfect story :) I bet Teresa loves herself a hell of a lot more than Cindy Crawford does!!!

Great post!
Wow, thank you for so many fabulous comments! Not only did I learn from growing up with her, my children learned not to judge a book by it's cover, that's for sure. Her tattoo is of, who else but, St. Theresa!! Her drink, God only knows!
Aw, she's having such a good time! I'm jealous. I want to be on a beach right now! :) Thanks for this nice post.
This post gave me goose bumps. You're sister looks like she'd be a lot of fun to hang out with. I completely missed the tatoo in the pic, I was too busy trying to guess what was in the drink! Thanks for sharing her story - true beauty really does come from within, and you're both gorgeous.
Great Post. Families with such experience typically have way more compassion and kindness in their daily interactions than the so-called "perfect" ones.
JK, that is so funny! She does look like she is carrying a house on her back.... She'll laugh when I point that out to her!
Great advice, photo & post! Well done!
MAWB: I don't see imperfection, I see inspiration. --rated--
There are no perfect people, but if there were your sister would be one I am sure.
Cool post (rated). Hey, how the hell is she holding that big house up all by herself?

AnniThyme - I have a physical deformity, not obvious when I'm clothed but there when I take my shirt off. As an adolescent I found kicking (not punching) people in the junk worked quite well. "Hey you have ______!!!" Crunch! "And now you have swollen nuts. Do you want me to yell it out to everybody?" I only had to do it a few times. Teenage boys seem to respect each other for getting sent to the principal's office for acts of violence.
What a wonderful story about your beautiful sister. I love her picture...she who is so obviously full of life. As for Cindy Crawford, I have a friend who worked professionally with her for years. He said she was one of the most gracious people he's ever worked with. Strongly rated.
So sweet. Thank you for the gentle reminder to appreciate ourselves for what we are.
Good for you and your sister. Some of his biographers say that FDR became more empathetic after he became paralyzed with polio. From time to time everyone makes a mistake about others, but often it is not out of meanness it is out of fear and awkwardness about being unable to deal with the suffering and pain of others. These people need prayer.
PS: Cindy Crawford still looks like a goddess, nevertheless. Beauty is also a gift.
What a great post. Your sister looks confident and happy---two elusive gifts.
Well done, MAWB, call me a sucker but I came for the title and stayed for the story! Your sister is remarkable, it must be a family trait... ;)
Rated for real people.
