the kindness of doctors

Rate: 31 Flag

I could write about many frustrating experiences with doctors, and waiting too long for appointments, and drug company kick backs, but today I am writing about something quite extraordinary doctors have done for our family.

Wednesday we learned my niece has another brain tumor. It is in the middle of her brain and unreachable by surgery. The only treatment option is twice a month chemo that costs $50,000 per session. With a 20% insurance copay my niece and her husband would owe $10,000 per treatment, $20,000 per month. She is a student, her husband an artist. Not possible.

Her doctor said "Let me call someone." He called a colleague who runs a treatment center. This doctor will treat my niece and absorb the copay. She took her first treatment yesterday.

Doors continue to open for my niece. This one was kept open by the kindness of doctors. One who knows and loves her, the other she had not yet met. Words cannot express how grateful I am. But I bet you can imagine.

I think you will understand if I do not want to engage in a discussion about the high cost of treatment and the politics of insurance and the national health care debate. Maybe another time. For now I want to remain positive and hope filled this works.
I'm so glad she is getting treatment and hope it works.
Best news I've heard/read all day, Sharon. I can't imagine anything that could top this. I suppose I could, but I don't wish to.
Dearest Friend, I will keep your niece in my prayers.
Kindness indeed. Sharon, my love and prayers go out to your niece, her doctors and all of you who love her so much.~r
Oh this is wonderful, wonderful news. It shows that despite all the injustice in the world when it comes to access to medical care, the human heart can sometimes break down those barriers! My prayers to your niece, and wishing lots of good karma will come to these doctors!
THANK GOD you just restored my faith in man and the medical profession. After my hospital visit last night and my journey of the past three years, I have been here today thinking KILL THEM ALL (of course, "all" meaning all doctors except for my Dad).
There are good doctors/people out there! So very happy to hear some pulling together to help out a fellow human in need. I hope this stuff kicks that tumor's ASS!!!
Wishes and prayers for your family, Sharon. Keep us posted. Kindness is a kind of miracle in itself.

It happens sometimes doesn't it? I was about to say unexpected kindness from doctors and then stopped because it struck me that that was a particularly sad recognition, that today a kindness from doctors might be unexpected :(. But unexpected or not I'm glad your family came across such a thing.

Who knows? Maybe all of this brouhaha over the health care system has served to raise awareness of the real needs of real families among those immersed within the medical profession that sometimes seem to have forgotten why they got into health care in the first place.. maybe we'll hear of more and more of these unexpected kindnesses?

Rated for well wishes for a little girl.
A truly beautiful thing and surely more to come. One good thing can trigger another, thank you for sharing your joy.
and you keep that kind generosity going by sharing this with the many who needed to hear it and find faith again in human kindness. thanks for that.
May healing waters flow through your niece, may miracles touch her every day, and that she will be on the road to full recovery. God, hear my prayer for Sharon's niece.
It always warms my heart to hear of those who will put care and kindness before money ... and if they are a stranger it is an especially beautiful thing to do.
If I hadn't already taken your word for it that your niece is a remarkable young woman, the action of her doctor, and the doctor who hadn't even met her, tells me so. I pray the treatments will extend her life so that you have more time together, and so she can continue to touch the lives of others with her spirit.
No words worthy of comment (and I started trying to about 3 times before this blurb)
Excellent! You give me hope that this world is going to be ok.
Best wishes and angels for all of you.
Wow. Hope all goes well. Some Drs. really do care.
Too often we are exposed to the Ayn Rand view of human beings. I am always inspired when I read or see their benevolence displayed. Thank you for this.
A toast to good people. A prayer for efficacy.
Sending many prayers for your neice and family, Mime! I'm so happy this opportunity opened up for her!
Summoning the white light of healing energy, the power of love and infinite prayers and the company of angels to fill and surround your niece, her caregivers, her doctors and all who love her so very very much. xo ...xo ...xo
i can imagine, and i'm so happy for her and your family that this doctor and his friends are in your circle. there are some lovely stories out there and good outcomes, and i'm hoping you're writing one. thank you for letting us know.
Since we read so many negative stories about the medical profession, it's nice to read one where the doctors are going above and beyond to help and heal. I hope her treatment is successful!
We are subject to the kindness of strangers, their personal generosity, when we should be allowed the treatments available, as our right to have medical care for our afflictions. Treatments exist, chances, opportunities for wellness, I surrender my good will when I think of those who do not have a kind doctor, willing to try and help, friends who will do the same. It is not the doctors that upset me, it is the system. I am not engaging in debate here, just observing how life is so much about chance, and I am happy your niece has been given this great kindness.
Thank you all so much. My niece is tolerating the first treatment fairly well. There was a love fest prayer meeting for her in LA on Saturday. We did the same at my house at the same time and sent pictures. It's times like this that I truly appreciate the wonders of our modern technology to stay connected and send those positive vibes. Thanks again for your support and positive thoughts.
Best wishes for her and her parents. And for those excellent doctors, too.

And a hug for you, when you need it. :)
I am so happy to read of the kindness that is paving the way forward for your niece. This is a timely, wonderful story - I immediately shared it with my husband who is so frustrated by the medical system, and the general culture of its doctors. It's good to remember that these doctors are people capable of incredible kindness. It's good to be reminded. Thank you. Wishing your niece wellness.
Happy to read this.
