Here's my list of twelve movies. I could list others, but if I had to be stranded on a desert island with twelve, I think I would be pretty happy with the variety of this collection:
1) El Amor Brujo (Spanish)
2) Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House
3) Das Boot (German)
4) The Ballad of Narayama (Japanese)
5) American Beauty
6) It's A Wonderful Life
7) The Hidden Fortress (Japanese)
8) Tampopo (Japanese)
9) American History X
10) School of Rock
11) Equus
12) The Grapes of Wrath

Yeah, I see what you mean.
Well, I got a huge kick out of it. There are a lot of comedies that I don't care for, but I really enjoyed School of Rock.
Obviously School of Rock is no Citizen Kane or Casablanca. Rather than identifying movies that I thought would be "the best," I was trying to come up with a collection of movies that I would enjoy were my viewing limited to that one group. Since I have mostly serious movies I decided that I also needed some comic relief.
one of the pleasures of seeing peoples' lists is to be reminded of great films that haven't crossed my mind lately, in this case "Das Boot", may be the best WWII movie ever
2) Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House YES!
3) Das Boot (German) ALMOST on mine but I had set out too many fish to fry and didn't even get to thinking about so so many films. (these lists are overwhelming to me).
4) The Ballad of Narayama (Japanese) added it to my Netflix queue.
5) American Beauty...debatable but I wouldn't quibble on this.
6) It's A Wonderful Life...my husband agrees with you...I don't know. I know I love it but I have mixed feelings.
7) The Hidden Fortress (Japanese) another netflix queue addition.
8) Tampopo (Japanese) this was very good..yes. I can see why you'd love this. I also loved A Taxing Woman, in fact the entire series, which was in the same vein. And not on Netflix. Gak!
9) American History X...I don't know why I don't agree with you on this...maybe I need to see it again. I remember it as terribly depressing.
10) School of Rock yet another netflix queue.
11) Equus...I don't know....I recall it was magnificent. I guess these top twelve are terribly personal.
12) The Grapes of Wrath. Oh yes. yes and yes.
this is precisely why it isn't possible for me to do a top ten or twelve or even a hundred. these great titles just keep on coming at me. And I think...Yes. Yes. oh that one..yes...okay that one too.
