Small Towns: Marshall, NC....walk with me....

Rate: 28 Flag

Let's start at the local store/restaurant/bar/watering hole. Prices are reasonable when you consider walking is easy.

Of course, I have to consider this face goes with me everywhere.

This Greek Revival county courthouse backs right into the mountain side.

This is the view from the highway just before the city limits. Don't let the sunshine fool you. It was not warm standing in the wind blowing off the mountains.

I do love Sycamore trees. Their white limbs always looks like bleached out bones reaching upwards.

The other end of town from the store. A five minute walk.

Looking across the river at the old school recycled into an artist's colony. Mission loves the parkland surrounding this place. So do I. No ducks or geese today. I don't know where they went. Somewhere warm is my guess.

Rocky hillsides are everywhere here.

So are damp places where mosses grow green. I do love the small world.

I return to this face. My cat Dude. She is hungry. Nothing new here.

I am in a blue funk mood. I cannot write a thing. Two sentences and I am done. But I did try today.
Mission, love your photos. Dude is cool. Railway tracks attrack me for reasons unknown. No sycamore trees around where I live, but I love to say the name. It's cold here too. Keep warm, be well.
I liked your too Fusun. Dude is a female. Since I call everything dude, she never got a name. She is a demanding cat. Everything must be now or else.
Dude looks demanding. I would do what dude wants, if I were you.
Good to see your sneaker in once shot though I'd rather see the whole Mission.
Lovely trip - thanks for taking me away for a bit. Hope your funk lifts soon. Blue/Black funk here too.
It sucks not being able to string words together in a way to make me happy Fernsy. I can think about the whole Mission. I am tempted here. But I have good reasons to not.
Dude is eating right now. She loves canned tuna for people. Cat food, not so much.
I am in a funk too Mission .. I dont know what it is. Hmm I think I do.
I wish I was there to sip a cool drink with you and love on 'that face that follows you everywhere":)
Both of them are eating now. Mission is a hog dog. She eats then whines to go out. Dude eats then whines because she wants more.
Pets!!
Yup. A few drinks shared would be great dear. One day.....we will.
Hey! I've been there! Hug on Dude for me, I will come up for air in a week or two.
You need some time off soon Ardee. Too much work makes a girl feel bad.
We need to throw down some drinks and have some laughter.
You can pet Mimi back for me.
Love small towns! So much to explore.

Don't think of this as "not writing" but rather as exploring another creative avenue. It's all valid.
I have to admit I choose carefully Harry. I wanted an area with much to offer and walkable to everything. This one has it all but the grocery store in a few easy steps. Plus is has a bicycle shop close in too. If the SHTF, I am in a good place, I think.
nice tour! my favorite shot is the one of the house by the railroad tracks. thanks!
It is actually a bookstore Diana. Wouldn't you know. But they do live upstairs.
Thanks for the tour of your cute little town. Hope that funk leaves soon.
Surely you have been there Trilogy.
I can't stand being like this. But maybe it will pass soon. Glad to see ya stop by here. Small towns are great places. I do like this one. I have to put down roots somewhere.
Just how I imagined your part of the world - very nice and quality pics too. Dude looks like she's either a Burmese or Oriental or both ??
Thanks for the tour; I was needing to get out for a spell. There are advantages to being in a large city, but the older I get the more I think they're outweighed by the negatives. I'd love to live in a place where I can walk across town in five minutes and in five minutes more be out in the woods and the hillsides. When are your rhododendrons going to bloom? You better get some pictures of that or I'll be pissed!
I prefer Twin Peaks: “Firewalk With Me” but never the less a charming little pictorial depiction of the crumbling American dream right down to the one eyed dog.
She is a mix from a 'found' cat so she can be anything you want to call her. Food and plenty of it is the most important thing for her.
Glad to see ya here Creek.
I promise to keep you in mind Nana, as long as I can afford batteries for the camera. I do love small town life. I met the mayor yesterday. And having this river so close is perfect!!

Now Jack. Don't mess with my namesake. She is a great idiot to have around. As a single woman I cannot complain. She greets me at the door, is always happy to see me, and most importantly never asks where all the money went...hahahahaha....one eye and all.
You don't have to write; you don't have to watch the news.

Great photos. Lovely town. Spring will come again. It always does.
You are right on both counts Connie.

Spring will come soon. I just checked the weather here. Rain changing to ice changing to snow. Not soon enough. dammit.
Just looked up your pretty town. Hot Springs, NC isn't that far away. May go have a soak?
I have been for a soak there already Connie. It rocks for the price. And is quite nice since everyone does it naked. I did too...
Okay...hand over the dog...too cute!!!!!!!!!!
r
You could not pry here from my cold dead hands Kate. She is my bedwarmer. And a mess at that. I do love my pets beyond measure dear. Thanks for stopping by.
Come on down Janie. I'll pay for a soak over at Hot Springs in the jacuzzi filled with 100F mineral water. You pack them bags girl.
Mish, thanks for the guided tour. Seems your town is about the same size as ours -- a five-minute walk end to end, with mountains substituted for the lake as a sort of signature. The RR looks like it's still operational (tracks got torn out here decades ago). Is it? Also, love the sign "Good Stuff". Appropriate to your post, too.
Is that a Mayberry badge hanging on the wall in the first pic? Your town is full of character. Love those old mountain towns. Dude looks pissed. Better keep her fed. When Ziggy is pissed at me, I wake up and his butt is like two inches from my nose. And that old hounddog........give her a hug for me.

Back where I come from, we called that funk cabin fever. Spring is about the only cure. Or a trip to Florida. The snowbirds are down now. Good for the economy, but not much else. Went to get a gallon of milk at the Winn Dixie and it took about a half hour.
Very Nice photos. What's the name of the river? And does the train still run through?
Yeah that is a badge from Mayberry Michael. It is on an old police car too in front of the officer friendly station too.

For the price of a gallon of milk, I would rather pay the local store. No time to get it and no car needed to buy it. Small towns can be good places to stay.
The river is called the French Broad Scot. Sorry I did not include the name. It is broad but not deep here at all.
Glad to see ya here.
Thanks for the walk, Mission. Your photographs are really lovely. I love sycamore trees too.~r
Boan. Missed your comment. the trains still run but not often. Only a few times a day. I do love small towns. They got heart and soul.
And good Stuff has it all. You can even ask for delivery. Not bad.
Glad to see ya Joan. Hope this means you are feeling a bit better. Sycamores are wonderful. I love the way they look this time of year.
I should have know the name of the river; read Ms. Dykeman's marvelous book, THE FRENCH BROAD, two years ago.
That's it Scot. I got the book in front of me on the shelf above my desk. Ms Dykeman does a good job on this place and its history.
Your pictures are pretty, your town is picturesque, your dog does not run from a camera and your cat looks almost exactly like mine. The QUEEN is a little darker. If I rate will you cheer up?
I feel pretty cheery now Nerd. Glad to see ya visit here.
you flatter quite well dear.
Hmm. I think this is a town where all the coolest of the cool live...
I loved your tour. Very nice.
There seems to be a mix of everything here Ester. from hippies to farmers.

Stacey glad to see ya drop in. There ain't much to this tour. Not even close to three hours and no boat.
Rough and rocky terrain can hold hidden beauties. Sorry about the funk Mission, seems to be prevelent. Stop by the roadstop and have a dance ...
I do admit to the funk Rita. Everyone I talk to has it.
Visiting the truckstop has crossed my mind more than once today. I need to catch up.
Love the pictures. It is a beautiful place indeed!
They play live music on the weekends at Good Stuff John. You would fit right in. It is a great place.
Excellent work Neighbor. The best travel log I have seen in years. Thanks for sharing your special place with all of us.
Glad to see ya out and about neighbor. As you can see, the camera you sent me works fine. I cannot thank you enough for it.
And Dude still loves the box you sent it in. Of course.
You live in a beautiful place.
Why are they called Smokey Mountains ?
I still miss my country town after nearly 9 years back in the city.
When I go back I expand, and familiar faces smile and say g'day.
Geez I miss that.
Thanks, Mission. I'm happy to know you live in such a town.
They are called that because of the fog rising off the trees and foliage from the heat and sun Kim. I live a little north of the big national park here. I will shoot some pictures for you when the time comes and you will see it.
I could not return to big city life again. I love the nods and waves here too much. And the local folk who are getting familiar. It is all in all a good place. I need some roots.
Cold outside? It looks fabulous!! I so envy you. r
I guess warm will be coming soon enough Hugs me.
Glad to see ya stopping in.
Hi Mission, thank for these photos. They're beautiful and definitely my kind of town. I think the blues may be also picking up vibes in the universe right now. You friend Mission there - what a soulful face. And Dude - would not want to cross him!! At least it's good to know you're in good company. Hugs to all of you from me and Lola!
My pets keep me centered on what is important Antoinette.
Food and lots of petting. Pet Lola for me and tell her I sent well wishes.
Mission, Nice to go for a walk with you and have a change of scenery. Poor doggy eye ...
Thank you Sheba.
Scarlett, she is a rescue. Someone took a boxknife to her. The eyes got it too. She can see some out of the good one, but not much.
I wish I could buy her another. I would, trust me.,
Sorry I'm late here and I do hope you're feeling a little better, friend. I can't tell you how lovely it was to get a peek at where you live and also of Mission and Dude! Love those names and loved this post!
Glad to see ya anytime Kate.
Those two pets keep me going. They know the time too. Walk time, feeding time. petting time is all the time.
Happy to post these. Living in these mountains can be fun. Small towns offer different things than large cities.
Nice pictures Mission.

Has the river ever flooded the town?

Is the flag being flown at half staff for the victims in Tuscon?

`R
Yes, the town has flooded. Last time was about six years ago.
I don't think the flag was at half staff, it was the wind blowing it and the angle I shot it from.
Glad to see ya anytime Larry. Come back soon. I'll put up more pics for you.
No. You are right. It is half staff. There was a death of an old county commissioner last week.
Pictures of pets and pretty little towns are guaranteed to make me smile! I love that area of North Carolina. My daughter has talked about moving to Asheville one day...so that's the area we may end up settling in.
You would fit right in here Bell. It is a great place to put up your feet and stay a while or forever.
The Asheville area is wonderful. Progressive with a big push to buy local and connect with folks who think about things.
Today was great. I went for a walk up a mountianside. Had a lovely time listening to birds and checking ot the view. Started walking back, slipped in the black mud, fell down, and laughed at myself.
Did not ever fall hard enough to hurt my pride....
What a cool and interesting little place, Mission. Looks like my kinda town
I do hope China is larger John.
But have my doubts....
Glad to see ya 'round these parts again.....
