Americana in Pictures.........

Rate: 20 Flag

The guys in front of this old store told me it was last open as a store in the late sixties. They were in a deep discussion on the weather...

n

Looking through the window of an antique store. A mix of old and new...

Marshall looks like the small town it is from across the river.

There are stacked stone walls everywhere here.

An old church sits on the hillside.

The new stage sits on the island park. A woman walked up and told me it only cost $70,000.

Marshall from across the way.

These bicylists were speeding along. Many come through touring on the weekends. I do love watching those mostly males pumping along. Eye candy indeed.

The local police station features this old car. On the side is a star titled Mayberry RFD.

Not many customers today.

This is the local weeky newspaper. The Sentinel News. Nice use of old boxcars....

Not only is it private but it has satelite TV.

This owner of the local junk store posed for me. I could not stop laughing at his antics...

This is downstream from Marshall and where the whitewater rafters get in for a ride downstream. None were getting in the clear cold water this day.

I guess no one lives in this Kudzu covered house. I did not knock on the door to see, however....

The water was too cold for wading but my feet went in to my knees. They went numb right away.

This old barn in the valley was a sight to see.

This one was still in use.

This folks must like isolation.

From the junk cars in front of this cellar like building, I could only decide this most have been a HillBilly Garage.....

I cannot seem to write a thing due to writer's block. I can still push the button on my camera. I hope you enjoy these.
Suzanne, this is a fascinating slice of American life that doesn't get a lot of photographic attention and is great to see your photo essay of these out of the way locations! I have seen many restaurants that use old passenger cars for their dining area but this is the first time I have seen a newspaper use box cars as part of their establishment! Thanks for sharing your photos and story with us!
Wonderful frames!!!!! Very impressive indeed Neighbor, very, very impressive. Thank you for a morning smile that will last all day.
Perfect! We have the same eye. I love places and spots like these. You've turned Marshall into a tourist destination!

And aren't photos worth a thousand words? So you did a lot of writing here today :)
I did, thanks for posting them.
I have to admit I love living somewhere that time seems to have stood still John. It has the feel of Georgia in my early childhood here.
Geezer, I am glad I can make you smile.
Janie, keep coming by and Iwill keep putting more up as I can.
Harry, I thought of you shooting some of these. You inspire me dear.
Nutjob, happy to see ya here. I am glad you like what I see.
Thank you, for showing a very real piece of Americana we hardly get to see on Open Salon or other media. Very poignant and reflective photos.
I hope to showcase more soon Fusun. This is the America most never see at all.
Excellent. The kudzu is really scary. I'm staring out the window at more snow, and Marshall really warmed me up. Thank you.
I 'jest' sure do pray Geezer94 stays around and shares his poetry. I have his book.

Beautiful. Great poems.
Great post too. Nature.
Thanks Mission. Much.

Nature is entertaining.
Nature is simply poems.
Ask Geezer94 to remain?
Ya gotta love thy neighbor.
Get satellite TV in outhouse.
It has not been very long since my view was snow Aim. I was happy for a sunny but not much warm day here.
Art, I thought of you shooting some of these. Soon I hope to put up some farms from here. And Geezers book rocks.
Glad you do Desert Rat.
You've got a great eye for capturing that sense of the true rural . . . a whole lot of America looks just like that . . .
I especially love the picture of the house covered with kudzu. Really weird. The barn in the middle of the field is beautiful.
I too, take photographs when I can't seem to write. The trouble is, I'm sick of taking pictures of winter!! ~r
I refer to myself as the photographer of the unseen Owl. And unknown too. I find much beauty in these pictures.
Great pics Mis. It almost looks like a near by town called Fairbluff. Right on the Lumber River with the bridge and the old buildings, even the antique and junk stores.
It finally hit over 60F here Saturday Joan. I am sick of cold too.
My fave is either the house or barns. I expect to take more soon. I could live 1000 years and not run out of things to shoot here.
I shot everyone of these within five miles of Marshall Scanner.
I am sure much of this area looks alike.
I want everyone to see it through my eyes. I am now collecting pictures of old houses in various states of decay. A post coming on that as soon as I get enough of them.
I love this place.. I am coming over!!
rated with hugs
Head on down Linda. There are rooms waiting in this B&B where I live. You would be more than welcome. Wait till hot weather and we will go for a swim and ride the rafts along the river. Would be fun...
As a former resident of N. C. I loved the pictures. My wife and I would visit the western part of the state on a regular basis. My eldest daughter was born in Charlotte. Love the pix! / R
I am a new resident of six months but sure do like it here Torrito.
It is scenic as can be. More to follow in pictures of this beautiful state.
Well, unpredicted warm weather and sunshine calls me out for a walk. I will come back later and answer all comments. Mission is signaling walk with a persistant whine I cannot listen to any longer.
Mission, Thank You. It's a holiday Monday here and it's pretty dull outside. Your post has inspired me to take a look back through some travels photos of warmer, brighter places. Nice Americana. The picture of the barn in the valley is really something. The colours remind me of an Andrew Wyeth painting.
Really like the photos. Especially the barn in the valley with the way the light was for that one. Reminds me of Hayesville, N.C. in the western corner of the state, where I lived for a few years.
NEAT!! Enjoyed very much!! RATED!!!!
Ty 4 sharing this part of your world with us. The barn in the valley shot was breathless. R
Glad you liked the old valley barn SS. I meant to edit it to B&W and never got to it. I though of the same artist when I saw it sitting.
Laughing, much of this could be about anywhere in the south. Keep your eyes open riding around. You will see the same thing elsewhere.
Tink darlin', you are always welcome on my porch.
Trudge, I shot this in afternoon light coming over the mountainside.
Very happy to see ya here in these parts. come back again, ya hear....
The water was sooooo cold Janie. I waded in and had fun till I could not longer feel me feets. and climbing out was a mess.
But glad to see ya drop by here dear.
There is a really nice room here sitting empty.......
Thanks Mission. Great slices of real life.
Kim. So happy you saw this post. Some of America besides Hollywood. I got one I want to show you later on. Houses of the poor. some abandoned. But thanks for having a look at this one dear.
Thanks for the tour, Mission.
You are always welcome Trilogy. Come on back now, ya hear.....
really nice, mission. I especially like the old barn in the field.
I feel like I just went on a mini-vacation! I'd bet there are some treasures in the first brick building, but the kudzu house looks haunted, even in the daylight. Spooky. I wonder how these little towns pop up, then grow a little, then become these Americana towns with so much character. Marshall looks like a photographers dream!
I thin the total population of Marshall is only about 800 in the winter Michael. At least it still has a functioning downtown.
The best part for me is that it is walkable. The speed limit here is 20mph. Well enforced by the local officer friendlys. Also that everyone here waves at you. and not the middle finger. But a real wave. I wave right back too.
These are great.

Here in CA, I usually take pics of places like Yosemite because besides a few gold rush spots, human constructs are too new to be very interesting.
I love them. Is the river tidel ? Whats it called please?
Is the owner of the junk store wearing Levis or Wranglers?
Oh yes and FRed(tm) just screamed (Siamese do that) what camera did you use? If you don't tell me I'll lie to him or my life will be Hell on four legs.

And, my pics always take ages to add 'red_eye' - it's a gift I guess.
Not a tidal river at all Creek. Way too far up in these mountains for that. Don't have a cue about the jeans. I use a Kodak Easyshare camera. Glad to see ya show up here.
I love this collection. It truly is what it is out there...
The Kudzu covered house looks promising. Is there a lake or a river in front of it ? I am seriously thinking of moving to North Carolina I liked it so much after I was invited to the Cackalacky Film Festival in Charlotte.
Nearly all of these were taken along the French Broad River Algis.
The river was behind my back in that photograph.
I got more to put up soon. But the spring weather keeps me outside today. It is too nice to sit inside right now. and has been. If you get a chance to move to this area, feel welcome. It is very scenic. I would love to see you shoot some here. Your pictures are outstanding!!
