I was listening to a book on tape and learned the "blog" came from the phrase, "web log." Now, saying I'm writing on a "web log" is so much more tasteful than saying I'm writing on a "blog." Sounds like the sound a boat makes when it enters the harbor. It doesn't conjure up the writing world for me, sorry. If web log was just to long to say, well then, "too bad" as my parents would've said.
But, the real point of my babbling is the question of why the heck do we have to "shorten" everything? What's the rush? Isn't it the quality of the thing that's important, not the quantity? Probably the most overused word in the English dictionary these days is "multi-tasking." And, that actually takes more time to say than "web log." But we keep doing it, and saying it. Fast-food, text-speak...these two modern trends of our society are taking the beauty out of writing, and the quality out of food. Yes, I do enjoy checking off items on my "to do" list, but does it have to be such a trade-off? I'd rather lose an hour of my day, just so I don't have to see the word "later" spelled "l8r." Makes me shiver just to type it out. Let's make it cool to slow things down....to write properly...spell things out. I promise not to use the word "blog" ever....or to write "C U" when I will meet up with the person later. Thank you for reading my "web log." See, that wasn't so hard!
