MJ's Rockin' New Year's

Rate: 9 Flag

Hey! As we count down to the New Year I thought it would be fun to revisit rock n roll New Year’s past.

Rock on and Happy New Year!

Grateful Dead 1985 (with Ken Kesey and Father Guido Sarducci). Midnight Hour. The first 4 minutes of this show the New Year’s procession/countdown narrated by SNL’s Father Guido Sarducci and an out-of-his-mind-tripping Ken Kesey (he’s the one screaming incoherently and seeing imaginary things). Then the Dead rock In the Midnight Hour

Phish 1999/2000. Heavy Things. The song Heavy Things performed on ABC. Clearly the band was nervous and (probably) a little stoned. Peter Jennings introduces them as "The Phish." They played for 7 and a half hours that night. Best party of the millennium. Wilson!

String Cheese Incident 2000/2001. Search. The instrumental section is glorious. They scale a mighty peak here. Turn this up and dance. (Note: this is labeled wrong on youtube--it's New Year's 2001)

My Morning Jacket 2008/2009. Celebration>Get Down On It. I was actually on the floor of MSG last year boogieing out to MMJ. Here’s a highlight—Celebration>Get Down On It. It felt very defiant and revolutionary to proclaim our celebration.

Boogie!

Excelsior!

Happy New Year!

Rock on, MJ!
I'll have to listen later (stupid pc at work shows me the clips, but no sound).

Happy 2010 to you!
Nice, MJ. BTW: did you know that excelsior is also a name for those foam packing peanuts? I always wondered about that...
Happy New Year MJ!
Rock on all!
And Frank--no I didn't know that about excelsior. Kind of puts a different spin on the interjection though!

And how high is Ken Kesey? When he starts hollering that he sees FDR and the bald eagle from the Muppets I lose it. Everytime.
And I think the front cover is hilarious today!

Well, it's party time!
MJ, I actually watched the whole 10 minutes of the first vid. Kesey? Priceless!
Happy New Year my friend!
Boogie is the operative word. Thanks for this, and Happy New Year!
Most excellent. Am supposed to be too old, but am a bit of a Deadhead myownself. Plus, I have the coolest Dylan story ever. Tell me when. Rock on!
MJ,
You are - without debate - the man when it comes to music picks. Thanks for this s-a-h-weet post.

I almost heard (in my head) something by Widespread Panic creeping in as a finalé - but I refrain :)
Rated and appreciated.
"It felt very defiant and revolutionary to proclaim our celebration." I like that quote. Its so true.

What a smart idea. I bet you could even collect some other cool rock New Year's videos but I haven't searched for that before.

Oh I left a comment at the end of my last piece about Loverboy. I proclaimed my love. I came out.
Uh, what time is it? It's 2010 right?

Thanks for the comments all. emma, Trig--thanks for stopping by!

Sally, I'd love to hear your Dylan story (as I am a big Dylan fan)

Dennis--Widespread! You know I really like them, but I never warmed to them like I did String Cheese. I miss the String Cheese Incident.

Beth--yeah, I actually looked around on youtube for a while, but I kind of wanted to highlight the type of bands I would want to hang with on New Years.
And although I didn't look, I'm sure Loverboy played a new Year's somewhere/sometime; though lord knows why anyone would care---besides you of course ;-)
Oh I LOVE that medley! "Get Down On It" was one of my favorite boogie tunes in my...er...wild youth!

A tremendous and happy New Year to you my brotha!

Feliz Año Nuevo y muchas felicidades siempre!
