I remember watching the film (The Happening) and I yelled out in my head as the character played by Mark Wahlberg "Yea! what is happening to all the honey bees, Why are they disappearing?
Synopsis: Elliot Moore (Wahlberg) is a high school science teacher who quizzes his class one day about an article in the New York Times. It's about the sudden, mysterious disappearance of bees. Yet again Nature is doing something inexplicable, and whatever science has to say about it in the end, only a theory. Scientists will bring out more theories, but no explanations, when a more urgent dilemma hits the planet.
I found this article entitled Josephine Alexander: Urban honey harvest tells her story about harvesting locally to provide pure honey for the community with an opportunity for others to learn how to do the same. Still thinking about honey bees, I found many reference that provided clues. Beekeepers in Western countries have been reporting slow declines of stocks for many years, apparently due to impaired protein production, changes in agricultural practice, or unpredictable weather. The decline seems unprecedented in recent history.
It is unclear whether this is simply an accelerated phase of the general decline due to stochastically more adverse conditions. One source weighs the evidence towards CCD being a syndrome rather than a disease as it seems to be caused by a combination of various contributing factors rather than a single pathogen or poison. But this video is truly well versed, she clearly points out that there is a clear problem. I don't believe in coincidence.
In 2010 the USDA reported that data on overall honey bee losses for 2010 indicate an estimated 34 percent loss, which is statistically similar to losses reported in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Source: Colony Collapse Disorder Progress Report (CCD) Still no clear explanation...
