Author Bonnie Lee? I'm originally from New York but have lived in the Bay Area for the past 20 years so I embody the best of East and West Coast sensibilities. I have traveled a bit; lived in Japan for 3 years, Israel, Costa Rica and Paris for a few months. My claim to fame was being a trapeze artist /contortionist for the Cirque du Soleil - Alegría show.
Spanish for "joy," Alegría explores power struggles, greed and the inevitability of change through the ages, as clowns laugh on, unscathed by the ravages of time.
Alegría sticks with old-fashioned big-top circus routines. Aerialists soar more than 40 feet to catch partners in midflight, while jugglers twirl batons of fire to the pulsing rhythms of Congo drums. As Mongolian acrobats twist, bend, and stretch into pretzel-like contortions, gymnasts perform bungee-cord dance acts that seem to invite whiplash.
A dreamlike score, written by René Dupéré, moves between jazz, pop, tango, and klezmer. The album, nominated for a Grammy in 1995, has sold more than 500,000 copies worldwide.
Synopsis
What if anything were possible? What if the stage became a fantastic world where the old were young again, and where the kings were clowns? And if that were ALEGRíA, what would you make of it all? Wherever ALEGRíA has passed, its refrain of folly and irreverent laughter echo still. Its magic and joy spring from a world turned upside down.
