Eventful Friday with Rex

Rate: 0 Flag

Friday was mindbogglingly bad.  Super Grandma was here for a brief visit from out of town.  The guys were looking forward to spending time and money with her and the Blue Angels Flight team was in town for an airshow.  Lots of excitement was in the air.

Friday morning went off just fine.  The guys went to school and Wonder Grandma took me and hubby to lunch at our favorite taqueria.  All was wonderful in a distractedly blissful way.  See, when moments go by without any immediate stress regarding Rex, I get a lulled into a state of 'all is fine' usually I get a jolt that may reach a 9.9 on the Richter scale.  That is precisely what occurred on Friday.

The first event was that there happened to be a substitute teacher in my son's band class.  Apparently the sub said something to him that then made the other kids in his class make fun of him.  Eventually my son threatened to hit another boy, who was teasing him, with a music stand.  Off to the office.  You may recall in my previous post that anytime a sub is in a classroom I am to be notified, or at least the school should be on it.  Not the case on Friday.  He was up in the office from 9am until I was finally called, 12:48.  While my son was in the office he was denied his lunch.  He went ballistic.  Informed the Vice Principal that he was now aware of who he was going to kill in his first reign of terror.

Yes.  My. Son. Said. THAT.  He has been suspended for 4 days.  The school does not want him to return.  The school wants him to be sent to a school for emotionally disturbed kids.  I want him to stay at the school.  I see what he said is awful and has to be taken with the utmost in seriousness, but is there not some blame on how this situation was handled?   Had that one simple phone call been made to me when the issue with the sub started we would not be in this predicament.

The meeting is tomorrow.  I am going before the Principal, VP, Special Ed, and the Office of Education.  I have letters from his teachers, who support him, his therapist, and he wrote a letter himself.  He is remorseful and sad, and wants to learn.  Perhaps a regular school setting is not what is ever going to work for him.  But if I home school will his minimal social skills deteriorate to nil?  So many questions that need solutions by 11 am Pacific time.
