Dear Michelle Malkin,

In light of your recent post referring to "left-wing extremists," it appears that you have still not corrected several errors in your previous coverage of this important issue. I could find nothing on your site that would serve as a correction to a previous post in which you charge that DHS was unfairly targeting "right-wing extremists" in its recent report. I look forward to you sharing the DHS report on the threat of left-wing extremists issued January 26, 2009 with your readers. This should help dispell the notion that only right-wing extremists have been singled out as a threat. You briefly mention that DHS also issues reports on left-wing extremists but then indicate that they are somehow qualitatively different from the report on right-wing extremists. Here's you: "But those past reports have always been very specific in identifying the exact groups, causes, and targets of domestic terrorism, i.e., the ALF, ELF, and Stop Huntingdon wackos who have engaged in physical harassment, arson, vandalism, and worse against pharmaceutical companies, farms, labs, and university researchers. By contrast, the piece of crap report issued on April 7 is a sweeping indictment of conservatives." In reality, the January report constantly discusses left-wing extremists as a group. The phrase is even in the title. One could even argue that instead of singling out right-wing extremists as potentially dangerous, DHS is actually giving equal consideration to threats from right-wing and left-wing extremists since it produced recent reports on both issues. Considering the importance you place on keeping America safe, I'm surprised that you are not committed to taking violent threats seriously regardless of where they originate from.

Furthermore, unless you equate all conservatives with potentially violent groups "that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely" (in the words of the report), then it's hard to see why the report on right-wing extremists is objectionable. Does simply describing the motivations and beliefs of those who might pose violent threats mean that DHS thinks that all people who hold those beliefs are violent? There are vegetarians in the world and then there are people who break into animal-testing facilities. They are both motivated by animal rights concerns but those in the first group are not being monitored by DHS and those in the second are. In fact the report clearly states that potentially violent right-wing groups use conservative issues to recruit members - not that everyone who holds those beliefs is dangerous. Your post conflates the two and is therefore highly misinformative.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to your upcoming post in which you will inform your readers of what I can only assume was an oversight or confusion on your part and issue a correction with a link to the PDF of the DHS report on left-wing extremists.

Thanks,
Your Reader
