Billy Currington

This is just a little break from some of the heavier, more serious essays I have been publishing lately. Even old theologians need a break now and then. But don't fret. I am going to publish a series of essays here soon that I have been writing for inclusion in a book I have decided to work on. So I will be asking you to put on your thinking caps again soon enough.  Today I am suggesting you just relax and enjoy a great young musical talent: country singer/songwriter Billy Currington.

I have listened to country music almost my entire life. I seldom listen to modern country music because so much of it is not really country at all. There are so many "cross over" artists from Pop and Rock that it is pretty rare when a genuine new country talent arises.  And if it were not for Mike Rodgers putting a YouTube video of one of Billy's  songs on Mike's latest post I would have missed hearing this one.

But I am glad Mike did, because Billy Currington is the genuine article. He has a pure country voice that reminds me of a young George Strait. He has three albums to date, one in 2003, one in 2005, and his last in 2008.  A little background on him is found here.

If country music isn't your thing, well, I will try to understand, but won't really be able to!  ;-)  So just give the first song or two a chance and see if you can't be pursuaded.

Sit back now, put on the headphones, or a good set of speakers, and listen to one who is going to be around a long, long time. Open OS in another tab and go about your business; that is if you can keep your mind off the music and that pure country voice. Country has a winner here, folks.

Thanks again, Mike.
 &
I hope you all enjoy this music.

Currington is very new on my radar too, Monte though it seems he's been around for a little while. I followed your link to wiki and realized that I know a couple of his songs even though I didn't know it!
"People are Crazy" is an instant country classic. Those don't come along every day. I'm also surprised at the amount of OSers that enjoy country. Not bad for a progressive site, but that is one thing I love about OS. Open minds. Thanks for the kudos, Monte. Going to hit play now!
I listen through the list twice! Can't believe how many Currington songs I know. Remember when they used to play songs on the radio and then give you the names of the artists? Why did that ever go out of vogue? Seems people would buy more albums if they knew who sings the,. These were all great! Thanks, Monte.
Good songs, good voice--thanks to the M&M boys!
I love country, and this young man has it all. Thanks for giving me an uplifting experience. It was "unbelievable heavenly..."

R
Well he is rather handsome!
This is great! "People are crazy" is one of the songs that I heard at the pool and mentioned in my (ridiculous) blog!!
I may be persuaded.
Thanks Monte!
walk a little straighter hits home. ~R~
Not a big country fan, but that boy has some good stuff.

Thanks for the tunes, Monte. Sort of like cleansing the spiritual palate before the next course. :-D

Rated.
Thanks again, Mike. A good find. I noticed several years ago that they no longer comment much on who is singing on country radio. I think that is because they really don't use disk jockeys all that much any more. They stack the records up and they play automatically much of the time, with ads taped in between.

Thank you, Pilgrim

Buffy: I agree. Great young talent.

SM: Sometimes it is hard to get people to even listen to country because there is so much junk played on country stations today that is all over the map and a lot of it isn't country at all. I almost never listen to country stations on radio. I do listen to the "Classic Country" feed on cable, no commercials, which helps.

Chuck: I think that song hits home with far too many people. A little close to the bone, isn't it?

Hey, Bill: Yep. We'll be serving up some stuff in the next few days that you have to chew on; but it won't be all that hard to swallow.
At least that is how I have written the drafts. I will clean them up right before I publish each one and try to make sure they are fairly easy to read and understand.

Thanks to everyone for listening and commenting.

Monte
A really nice sound, Monte. Thanks.
Of course I had to take a look (he's so handsome) and a listen. Until I moved south I didn't really appreciate country, but there are some good, down home stuff and he's one of them
Thanks, Walter, glad you liked the selections.

Hi, Anne, yes, I think this fellow has a big future if he sticks to the basics and does not let some handler change his sound. Too many country artists today let that happen.

Kay, glad you will give it a listen. You may be pleasantly surprised. I have that Rosanne Cash album, and that is a great song. I liked the whole album. Also have the Rodney Crowell's album that he cut right after they broke up. It has some great heartbreak songs on it as well. They were a cute couple there for a while.

Monte
Good music is good music, and this kid is allright!
Thanks, Zuma. I think so too.

Monte
oh for god's sake yre a country boy....my ex loved the new pop-ish stuff and i cant abide it no more, so sorry...

oh i listened and it's good, i admit...

now: i got my thinkin cap on
like patrick stewart in
xmen..

it is a hell of a cap these days,
ya country bumpkin, so lets go on them essays,eh?

still a dylanfreak, Jim
hey didja know dylan invented
modern country music,
w/nashvill e skyline?
He does sound like George Strait, though I think he's starting at a higher level than Strait did. The thing I love about Strait is that his music has continued to grow. Thanks for the light post this morning. I'm a bit behind on reading but really agree with his song, "People are Crazy."
Hey, Jim. Good to hear from you. I was a country boy long before it was popular to be country. And long before Dylan. Dylan dabbled in folk, country, blues, etc. He really defies classification as far as I am concerned.

JR: I surely agree that "people are crazy," except for thee and me, of course. I still enjoy Strait and will likely always consider his pure sound and failure to capitulate to the trends as a big bonus. He simply has integrity. And there is not enough of that to go around these days in country music. Currington is a bit older and is not a "newcomer." He has been around for three albums already. So he has 6 years association with a major record label. He is new to me, but not to the music scene.

Thanks for both of your comments.

monte,
Defying classification, denying sujugation...
i can't feel the way to such a fate but i want to know
the secret to mercurialness, for life is change and i must
ride the Change somehow for i am young and i have no solid
identity & never shall...i am of the generation X and i am w/o a face
and i will try to prove that i am not an abberation, i am
squeezed between the Boomers and th e New Youth, who
are the first to be born to the Global Village...

an Xer is no person
he was born in Mayberry
and now he finds himself in a world of incomprehensible
speed & chaos and he will run run to the end of the Race and
the marathons
and the running...he is a runner...
Thanks for the intro to his stuff.
James: thanks for your further comments.

Professor: glad to do it.

Very nice Monte, my country favs are Roseanne Cash (post breakup, The Wheel is amazing and got me thru a lot of stuff) and I love Emmylou Harris, "Wrecking Ball" cd and on. I am not a "traditional" country fan, but it is better than rap any day.
Thanks for listening and commenting. Roseanne is one of my favs also.

Monte
u know I got to get me some earphones! since i prowl around at nights i cant listen to music and wake the sleeping husband up. But will listen only to understand the diff between country and pop..........Thanks.
Thanks, Traveler. The speakers on my laptop are so tinny and pathetic that I always use headphones or earbuds to listen to music, Netflix movies, etc. You can get reasonably good earbuds or headphones for about $10-$15. I got both on Amazon.com
You don't have to spend a fortune on them. They make a world of difference in the sound.
