Gov. Rod Blagojevich: The Mortimer Hayden Smyth Interview
I was fortunate enough to land a 5-minute phone interview with Gov. Rod Blagojevich at the tail end of last week-- the machinations of negotiating such a scoop were complicated, haphazard and somewhat exhausting, and
I'm not entirely certain he knew who I was. Our first attempt at a phone interview lasted only a few seconds before our connection was severed and I had to call back.
Of course, Blagojevich was the Man Of The Hour last week, and he retains this status during week two of his saga-- there is speculation that he will tender his resignation today, but there is also speculation that he is suffering from mental illness, so your guess is as good as mine. In our brief chat, I found his candor both refreshing and slightly disconcerting, and his mood seemed, at times, to be surprisingly upbeat for a man whose life is in ruins.
One note about the language: if any small children are in the room, be warned. Although I have attempted to censor any and all profanities uttered in the course of our dialogue, a savvy youngster may be able to decipher the forbidden words despite their bleeping.
